âSometimes the Meaning of the Text is Unclearâ: Making âSenseâ of the \u3cem\u3eSCUM Manifesto\u3c/em\u3e in a Contemporary Swedish Context
In 2003 the first Swedish translation of the well-known second-wave feminist manifesto, the SCUM Manifesto by Valerie Solanas, was published. Publication of this text became intricately involved with a number of other contemporary events in Sweden which pose questions about that countryâs widely perceived status as one of the most âgender equalâ in the world. In this paper, I use the textâs own challenging content, provocative language and complicated history as a way into exploring its disruptive effects on Swedish society. I ask how and why the text retains its power to provoke and challenge some forty years after its initial publication, and its place in the so-called âfeminist canon.
Community violence exposure among underprivileged adolescents : what are the buffering effects of family qualities on negative outcomes?
Crime and violence are common in impoverished neighborhoods. Consequently, many youth are at risk for victimization and witnessing violent acts. Extensive research has established the presence of significant associations between violence exposure and aggression and posttraumatic stress symptoms among youth. Research has confirmed the protective role of several family characteristics against these negative outcomes despite adversity. However, the literature investigating the buffering effects of family in the relationship between community violence exposure and aggressive behavior and posttraumatic stress symptoms is limited. The current study examined the moderating effect of family factors such as household structure, social support, and parenting techniques in the relationship between substantial community violence exposure and two highly associated negative outcomes (aggression and PTS symptoms). Hierarchical multiple regressions revealed that, above and beyond other family qualities, parenting techniques such as involvement and praise acted as significant protective factors in the relationship between community violence exposure and subsequent aggression among impoverished youth. Implications, limitations, and directions for future research are discussed
Bullying in Schools: The Relationship between Educational Staff Burnout and Staff Response to Bullying
Bullying among school-aged youth is associated with negative short- and long-term consequences. Research suggests that teachers can be influential in reducing bullying but that they often do little to address it. Occupational burnout is high among educators and can significantly affect studentsâ motivation, learning, and feelings of support. The current study examines the effect of occupational burnout on educational staffâs likelihood of responding to bullies and victims of physical, verbal, relational, and cyber bullying. Participants (N = 109) were administrators, teachers, and other school staff serving secondary-level students. Overall, most participants reported experiencing low levels of burnout, viewed bullying as severe, and were likely to respond to bullies and victims of bullying. Typical responses to bullies of all types of bullying included indicating that the behavior was intolerable, sending to higher authority, and contacting parents, while responses to victims of each type of bullying typically involved providing comfort, contacting parents, and referring to a school counselor. Results of hierarchical multiple regression analyses revealed that perceived severity of the bullying incident significantly positively predicted likelihood of responding to both the bully and the victim of each type bullying. Occupational burnout was not predictive of likelihood of responding more so than perceived severity, but trends were identified. The implications, limitations, and areas for future research are discussed

Cluster Munition Remnant Survey in Southeast Asia
Efficient and effective land release is a core global priority for MAG (Mines Advisory Group), Norwegian Peopleâs Aid (NPA), and The HALO Trust (HALO), as significant and ongoing investment of resources and expertise continually improve procedures and approaches. Cluster Munitions Remnants Survey: Best Practice in South East Asia is the result of many years of close cooperation between MAG, NPA, and HALO on survey and clearance of cluster munition remnants (CMR) in Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. Ahead of the 9th Meeting of States Party (9MSP) to the Convention on Cluster Munitions (CCM), held in Geneva in September 2019, operational and programmatic staff from the three organizations met to discuss key lessons learned during twelve years of surveying cluster munitions in Southeast Asia. The identified lessons and agreed best practice were summarized in a joint publication that was also presented at a side event during the 9MSP in Geneva attended by government delegates, national mine action authorities, international mine action and U.N. organizations, and civil society. The publication and side event were generously funded by the Government of the United States

Byzantine Carved Gemstones: Their Typology, Dating, Materiality, and Function
This dissertation examines gemstones carved in relief from the middle and late Byzantine periods. Byzantine gems share a similar aesthetic with relief carvings in ivory and steatite, but they have not been as thoroughly studied. This dissertation seeks to address the lacuna in scholarship by assembling, dating, and analyzing two hundred Byzantine gems. Carved gemstones average less than four centimeters in height. Bloodstone, a variety of jasper, was carved the most frequently. Almost all are enkolpia, or pectoral pendants. The earliest pieces can be dated to the tenth through the early eleventh centuries. They are skillfully carved, and some display imperial themes such as the standing Christ and a symbol that is reminiscent of the globus cruciger. Some display iconographic and stylistic similarities with icons in ivory, which are also associated with emperors. The greatest number of pieces date to the twelfth century, and their quality varies considerably. This seems to suggest that initially gemstone enkolpia were owned by emperors and other elites, but that by the twelfth century they had become more accessible and their use increased. This finding is consistent with our knowledge of the cultural climate and religious practices of the twelfth century, which is characterized by a taste for luxury objects and a form of piety that was focused upon attaining individual salvation.
The function of gemstone enkolpia was explored through iconographic and textual analysis, as well as a through the study of their materiality. It was found that all of the gems are carved with religious subject matter and that most display portrait images of holy figures who were known as intercessors and protectors. This suggests that gemstone enkolpia were primarily used to mediate a devotional relationship with a patron saint. Textual sources indicate that wearing an enkolpion âover the heartâ was an act of devotion that ensured that the saintâs presence was carried at all times. An examination of the materiality of gems revealed that their meanings and associations were brought to bear upon the devotional function of gemstone enkolpia in a variety of complex ways. It was also found that gemstone enkolpia had an amuletic nature and could be used for healing, protection, and divination.History of Art and Architectur
Child survival in England: Strengthening governance for health.
The United Kingdom, like all European countries, is struggling to strengthen health systems and improve conditions for child health and survival. Child mortality in the UK has failed to improve in line with other countries. Securing optimal conditions for child health requires a healthy society, strong health system, and effective health care. We examine inter-sectoral and intra-sectoral policy and governance for child health and survival in England. Literature reviews and universally applicable clinical scenarios were used to examine child health problems and English policy and governance responses for improving child health through integrating care and strengthening health systems, over the past 15 years. We applied the TAPIC framework for analysing policy governance: transparency, accountability, participation, integrity, and capacity. We identified strengths and weaknesses in child health governance in all the five domains. However there remain policy failures that are not fully explained by the TAPIC framework. Other problems with successfully translating policy to improved health that we identified include policy flux; policies insufficiently supported by delivery mechanisms, measurable targets, and sufficient budgets; and policies with unintended or contradictory aspects. We make recommendations for inter-sectoral and intra-sectoral child health governance, policy, and action to improve child health in England with relevant lessons for other countries

Gender & Physical Activity and Their Relationship to Binge Drinking & Overall Frequencey of Alcohol Consumption Among Adolescents
The purpose of this study is to explore how gender and physical activity (PA)are related to alcohol use (AU) among adolescents. A better understanding offactors that influence AU among adolescents will facilitate the developmentof preventive interventions in this population. The sample was pulled from the 2011 Youth Risk Behavior SurveillanceSystem (YRBSS), which used a systematic equal probability sampling of9-12 graders. It was hypothesized that males would have higher rates of AUthan would females. PA was also hypothesized to show stronger associationswith AU among males than among females.Consistent with our hypothesis, males were found to consume morealcohol versus females. Though a select-few research studies have found anassociation between higher levels of PA and high levels of alcohol use, thelarge association we found was unexpected. Additionally, we predictedappropriately that PA would have a greater influence on AU among males. While prior research has determined the importance of PA in advancinghealth-related outcomes, relatively few studies have examined therelationship between PA and specific problem health behaviors amongadolescents. Therefore, identifying the factors that influence the relationshipbetween PA and AU is important
