    Making Neutrinos Massive with an Axion in Supersymmetry

    The minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) of particle interactions is extended to include three singlet (right-handed) neutrino superfields together with three other singlet superfields. The resulting theory is assumed to be invariant under an anomalous global U(1) (Peccei-Quinn) symmetry with one fundamental mass m2m_2. The soft breaking of supersymmetry at the TeV scale is shown to generate an axion scale faf_a of order m2m_2.     Low-Scale Axion from Large Extra Dimensions

    The mass of the axion and its decay rate are known to depend only on the scale of Peccei-Quinn symmetry breaking, which is constrained by astrophysics and cosmology to be between 10910^9 and 101210^{12} GeV. We propose a new mechanism such that this effective scale is preserved and yet the fundamental breaking scale of U(1)PQU(1)_{PQ} is very small (a kind of inverse seesaw) in the context of large extra dimensions with an anomalous U(1) gauge symmetry in our brane.     Phenol Nitration Induced by an {Fe(NO)\u3csub\u3e2\u3c/sub\u3e}\u3csup\u3e10\u3c/sup\u3e Dinitrosyl Iron Complex

    Cellular dinitrosyl iron complexes (DNICs) have long been considered NO carriers. Although other physiological roles of DNICs have been postulated, their chemical functionality outside of NO transfer has not been demonstrated thus far. Here we report the unprecedented dioxygen reactivity of a N-bound {Fe(NO)2}10 DNIC, [Fe(TMEDA)(NO)2] (1). In the presence of O2, 1 becomes a nitrating agent that converts 2,4,-di-tert-butylphenol to 2,4-di-tert-butyl-6-nitrophenol via formation of a putative iron-peroxynitrite [Fe(TMEDA)(NO)(ONOO)] (2) that is stable below −80 °C. Iron K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy on 2 supports a five-coordinated metal center with a bound peroxynitrite in a cyclic bidentate fashion. The peroxynitrite ligand of 2 readily decays at increased temperature or under illumination. These results suggest that DNICs could have multiple physiological or deleterious roles, including that of cellular nitrating agents

    Seasonal and dietary influences on adipose tissue and systemic gene expression in control and previously laminitic ponies

    The aims of the study were to determine whether adipose tissue global gene expression (i) differs between never laminitic (NL) and previously laminitic (PL) ponies; (ii) is influenced by season and/or a diet designed to simulate spring grass and (iii) differences seen also occur systemically in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). Subcutaneous adipose tissue and PBMCs were obtained from six NL and six PL ponies on three occasions; summer, winter (season study) and in winter after consuming a diet simulating spring grass for seven days (diet study). Adipose tissue global gene expression was determined using a 44K equine specific microarray, validated using multiplex quantitative real time PCR (qRT-PCR) and analysed using GeneSpring software and Ingenuity Pathway Analysis. PBMC gene expression was quantified using qRT-PCR. The total number of genes whose expression differed (=2-fold change, p=0.01) between PL and NL ponies was greater in summer (192 genes) compared to winter (58 genes); 40/192 genes influenced by disease in the summer were also seasonally regulated and were predominantly associated with inflammation. The genes modified by dietary intervention and PBMC gene expression did not follow the same pattern as the season study. Thus, adipose tissue global gene expression differed between NL and PL ponies most in summer compared to winter, and these differentially expressed genes predominantly related to inflammation

    Equivariant Topological Sigma Models

    We identify and examine a generalization of topological sigma models suitable for coupling to topological open strings. The targets are Kahler manifolds with a real structure, i.e. with an involution acting as a complex conjugation, compatible with the Kahler metric. These models satisfy axioms of what might be called ``equivariant topological quantum field theory,'' generalizing the axioms of topological field theory as given by Atiyah. Observables of the equivariant topological sigma models correspond to cohomological classes in an equivariant cohomology theory of the targets. Their correlation functions can be computed, leading to intersection theory on instanton moduli spaces with a natural real structure. An equivariant CP1×CP1CP^1\times CP^1 model is discussed in detail, and solved explicitly. Finally, we discuss the equivariant formulation of topological gravity on surfaces of unoriented open and closed string theory, and find a Z2Z_2 anomaly explaining some problems with the formulation of topological open string theory.Comment: 39 pages, 6 figures (available upon request); pure LaTeX file.     Theta angle versus CP violation in the leptonic sector

    Assuming that the axion mechanism of solving the strong CP problem does not exist and the vanishing of theta at tree level is achieved by some model-building means, we study the naturalness of having large CP-violating sources in the leptonic sector. We consider the radiative mechanisms which transfer a possibly large CP-violating phase in the leptonic sector to the theta parameter. It is found that large theta cannot be induced in the models with one Higgs doublet as at least three loops are required in this case. In the models with two or more Higgs doublets the dominant source of theta is the phases in the scalar potential, induced by CP violation in leptonic sector. Thus, in the MSSM framework the imaginary part of the trilinear soft-breaking parameter A_l generates the corrections to the theta angle already at one loop. These corrections are large, excluding the possibility of large phases, unless the universality in the slepton sector is strongly violated.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure

    Nucleation versus Spinodal decomposition in a first order quark hadron phase transition

    We investigate the scenario of homogeneous nucleation for a first order quark-hadron phase transition in a rapidly expanding background of quark gluon plasma. Using an improved preexponential factor for homogeneous nucleation rate, we solve a set of coupled equations to study the hadronization and the hydrodynamical evolution of the matter. It is found that significant supercooling is possible before hadronization begins. This study also suggests that spinodal decomposition competes with nucleation and may provide an alternative mechanism for phase conversion particularly if the transition is strong enough and the medium is nonviscous.     We propose a new axionic solution of the strong CP problem with a Peccei-Quinn mechanism using the gluino rather than quarks. The spontaneous breaking of this new global U(1) at 10^{11} GeV also generates the supersymmetry breaking scale of 1 TeV (solving the so-called \mu problem at the same time) and results in the MSSM (Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model) with R parity conservation.     Spin-wave Scattering in the Effective Lagrangian Perspective

    Nonrelativistic systems exhibiting collective magnetic behavior are analyzed in the framework of effective Lagrangians. The method, formulating the dynamics in terms of Goldstone bosons, allows to investigate the consequences of spontaneous symmetry breaking from a unified point of view. Low energy theorems concerning spin-wave scattering in ferro- and antiferromagnets are established, emphasizing the simplicity of actual calculations. The present work includes approximate symmetries and discusses the modification of the low energy structure imposed by an external magnetic and an anisotropy field, respectively. Throughout the paper, analogies between condensed matter physics and Lorentz-invariant theories are pointed out, demonstrating the universal feature of the effective Lagrangian technique.Comment: Published versio

    A comparative thematic review of vocational leadership literature from the USA, Great Britain and Australia

    Vocational education and its leadership is an important sphere of economic activity worldwide and is being impacted by several trends including: the increasing significance and centrality of skills development in today’s economies; economic trends associated with globalisation (internationalisation of education and emergence of global labour markets); and demographic trends resulting in ageing populations and workforces. Leadership in vocational education contexts is crucial to the economic success of this sector. The aim of this paper is to provide a comparative thematic review of the research and literature on leadership in vocational education between the USA, Great Britain and Australia posed by the research question, ‘What are the key leadership issues facing vocational education and training sectors in the USA, Great Britain and Australia?’ This study contributes to the research and literature by identifying key impact factors for vocational education leadership in these nations over the last 13 years. Results from the comparative review established the following three key issues: a concern over equity and diversity; the importance of change management; and leadership skills and their development. Although leadership competencies are the subject of some debate there appears to be a broad consensus that leaders are developed not only by formal courses, but more importantly by on-the-job experiential learning. The future development of leaders within vocational education is discussed in relation to the implications for policy and practice, and suggestions for future research are provided
