The Effect of Undergraduate Biology Research Experiences and Mentoring Structures on Student Self-Efficacy
Collaborative inquiry within undergraduate research experiences (UREs) is an effective curriculum tool to support student growth. This study seeks to understand how collaborative inquiry within undergraduate biology student experiences are affected within faculty mentored experiences and non-mentored experiences at a large private southeastern university. Undergraduate biology students engaged in UREs (faculty as mentor and non-mentor experiences) were examined for statistically significant differences in student self-efficacy. Self-efficacy was measured in three subcomponents (thinking and working like a scientist, scientific self-efficacy, and scientific identity) from student responses obtained in an online survey. Responses were analyzed using a nonparametric equivalent of a t test (Mann Whitney U test) to make comparisons between faculty mentored and non-mentored student groups. The conclusions of this study highlight the statistically significant effect of faculty mentoring in all three subcomponents. Faculty and university policy makers can apply these findings to develop further support for effective faculty mentoring practices in UREs

The New Black Face: The Transition of Black One-Dimensional Characters from Film to Video Games
This paper is about the stereotypical portrayal of black character\u27s in film and how these portrayals transitioned to video games. Video games are a growing medium that continue to evolve as technology advances. As video games have advanced, the characters have become more intricate than the two-dimensional character sprites featured on the earlier Nintendo NES and Atari consoles. Naturally, characters in video games are derived or inspired by actual people and as such display characteristics of different races/ethnic groups. In this paper, I will explore how stereotypical black characters have influenced the way in which characters are developed in video games. This analysis will also explore how these characters, which lack depth and complexity, continue to perpetuate problematic stereotypes about black identity. To complete this analysis, I will use literature that explores the African American cinematic experience, because video games are becoming more like films in that they feature interactive plots and more sophisticated characters. I will explore the portrayal of the black body in many games and my hope is that this paper will challenge future game designers to create three-dimensional characters rather than one-dimensional caricatures. Hence, my hope is that this paper will challenge future game designers to create three-dimensional characters rather than one-dimensional caricatures
Design of an Integrated Silicon Carbide Nonlinear-carrier PWM Controller for Boost Converter Applications
Power electronics consisting of a switch mode power supply with feedback control have a great number of applications, including many that require extreme environment capability, such as the aerospace and automotive industries.
Silicon carbide (SiC) is a common material in which power devices are created for use in switch mode power supplies, such as boost converters, giving those power supplies extremely high temperature capabilities. To truly realize the temperature capabilities of SiC in power supplies, an integrated SiC converter has been designed that is also high-temperature capable.
Herein, the properties of SiC integrate circuit (IC) processes are discussed and nonlinear-carrier (NLC) control is proposed as a controller topology that can work within the design challenges presented by SiC. A boost converter with an NLC controller is demonstrated in simulation with circuit blocks built entirely from SiC IC models
Mary Stuart: Turbulence in Politics & Religion
Mary Stuart’s upbringing played a large part in her political and religious positions, as well as her position as a female ruler in a land dominated by the whims of men. Mary is often portrayed as a passionate woman whose life was dominated by her emotions. At 6 days old Mary inherited the throne to Scotland, a highly contested reÂgion located directly above the ever-expanding realm of England. Mary spent much of her time in France, being raised as the Dauphiness to strengthen the ties of Catholic monarchs. Historians like John Guy and Antonia Frasier frame this as a very formative time for Mary. In her stead, her mother, Mary de Guise, was left to preserve the peace in Scotland for her young daughter. During this time Scotland’s religious climate flipped and, upon Mary’s return to her homeland, she was virtually an outsider. It is disputed on whether Mary truly felt this way, and this paper will explore different views on the subject. Mary’s relationship with Elizabeth is often focused on and both Guy and Jane Dunn have studies that take slightly different stances on this relationship. As Mary had her own claim to the English throne through Margaret Tudor this relationship was quite interesting. Mary was seen by many to be the rightful successor to the English throne due to the execution of Elizabeth Tudor’s mother, Anne Boleyn. As Europe faced a turbulent transition to its modern period its monarchs like Mary faced turbuÂlence as well

Longitudinal patterns of emerging literacy in beginning deaf and hearing readers
The emerging reading and spelling abilities of 24 deaf and 23 hearing beginning readers were followed over 2 years. The deaf children varied in their language backgrounds and preferred mode of communication. All children were given a range of literacy, cognitive and language-based tasks every 12 months. Deaf and hearing children made similar progress in literacy in the beginning stages of reading development and then their trajectories began to diverge. The longitudinal correlates of beginning reading in the deaf children were earlier vocabulary, letter-sound knowledge, and speechreading. Earlier phonological awareness was not a longitudinal correlate of reading ability once earlier reading levels were controlled. Only letter name knowledge was longitudinally related to spelling ability. Speechreading was also a strong longitudinal correlate of reading and spelling in the hearing children. The findings suggested that deaf and hearing children utilize slightly different reading strategies over the first 2 years of schooling
JaK\u27D Modular Drum System
The JaK’D Modular Drum System (MDS) is a drum module that allows the customer to purchase a base modÂule with a certain amount of ports and allows the option to purchase add-on modules to give more input ports as needed. With existing drum modules on the market, if one were to run out of input ports, they would have to buy an entirely new module that has room for the new devices. The JaK’D MDS negates this problem by introducing expandability to the drum module market. The front of the main module has an LCD screen with directional buttons to navigate, as well as an enter button, back button, power button, and six rotary knobs for volume control. Two additional buttons are used to determine which inputs are being controlled with the volume knobs allowing the user to have control over all inputs without cluttering the face with numerous knobs. The screen and navigation buttons are used to assign sound effects to each of the inputs, as well as monitor the sound levels of the inputs. The back of the module has the input and output ports. The add-on modules have no buttons on their top and, like the base module, the inputs are along the back of the add-on modules with the hardwire connection being on the side of all modules

Concurrent and longitudinal predictors of reading for deaf and hearing children in primary school
Forty-one children with severe-profound prelingual hearing loss were assessed on single word reading, reading comprehension, English vocabulary, phonological awareness and speechreading at three time points, one year apart (T1, T2, T3). Their progress was compared with that of a group of hearing children of similar non-verbal IQ, initially reading at the same level. Single word reading improved at each assessment point for the deaf children but there was no growth in reading comprehension from T2 to T3. There were no differences between children with cochlear implants and those with hearing aids on either reading measure but orally-educated children had higher scores than children who signed in the classroom. English vocabulary and speechreading were the most consistent longitudinal predictors of reading for the deaf children. Phonological awareness was the most consistent longitudinal predictor for the hearing group and also a concurrent predictor of reading at T3 for both groups. There were many more significant correlations among the various measures for the deaf children than the hearing at both T1 and T3, suggesting that skills underpinning reading, including phonological awareness and vocabulary, are more closely related for deaf children. Implications of these findings for of deaf children’s literacy are explored
