Dual-purpose self-deliverable lunar surface PV electrical power system
A safe haven and work supported PV power systems on the lunar surface will likely be required by NASA in support of the manned outpost scheduled for the post-2000 lunar/Mars exploration and colonization initiative. Initial system modeling and computer analysis shows that the concept is workable and contains no major high risk technology issues which cannot be resolved in the circa 2000 to 2025 timeframe. A specific selection of the best suited type of electric thruster has not been done; the initial modeling was done using an ion thruster, but Rocketdyne must also evaluate arc and resisto-jets before a final design can be formulated. As a general observation, it appears that such a system can deliver itself to the Moon using many system elements that must be transported as dead payload mass in more conventional delivery modes. It further appears that a larger power system providing a much higher safe haven power level is feasible if this delivery system is implemented, perhaps even sufficient to permit resource prospecting and/or lab experimentation. The concept permits growth and can be expanded to include cargo transport such as habitat and working modules. In short, the combined payload could be manned soon after landing and checkout. NASA has expended substantial resources in the development of electric propulsion concepts and hardware that can be applied to a lunar transport system such as described herein. In short, the paper may represent a viable mission on which previous investments play an invaluable role. A more comprehensive technical paper which embodies second generation analysis and system size will be prepared for near-term presentation

Can teaching ultrasound ergonomics to ultrasound practitioners reduce white knuckles and transducer grip force?
Ergonomic training is necessary to help to reduce work related upper limb disorders (WRULDs) in ultrasound practitioners. This study provided an ergonomic training session for ultrasound practitioners to determine whether a teaching intervention changed the grip force used to hold a transducer. Thirteen practitioners participated and were placed into two groups (intervention group n=7). Participants were asked to scan the same simulated transabdominal early pregnancy case. An ergometer was used, which enabled all participants to hear the effect of holding the transducer tightly. Their matched grip force was measured before and after the intervention using a dynamometer. The intervention group reviewed videos and photographs taken during the scan to see if this affected the matched grip force further. Study findings showed that the short ergonomic training session with the use of an ergometer significantly reduced the matched grip force applied to a transducer (p<0.05) for all participants. The video/photo review did not result in any further significant changes
Interstellar Carbon in Translucent Sightlines
We report interstellar C II column densities or upper limits determined from
weak absorption of the 2325.4029 A intersystem transition observed in six
translucent sightlines with STIS. The sightlines sample a wide range of
interstellar characteristics including total-to-selective extinction, R_{V} =
2.6 - 5.1; average hydrogen density along the sightline, = 3 - 14
cm^{-3}; and fraction of H in molecular form, 0 - 40%. Four of the sightlines,
those toward HD 37021, HD 37061, HD 147888 and HD 207198, have interstellar
gas-phase abundances that are consistent with the diffuse sightline ratio of
161 +/- 17 carbon atoms in the gas per million hydrogen nuclei. We note that
while it has a gas-phase carbon abundance that is consistent with the other
sightlines, a large fraction of the C II toward HD 37061 is in an excited
state. The sightline toward HD 152590 has a measured interstellar gas-phase
carbon abundance that is well above the diffuse sightline average; the column
density of C in this sightline may be overestimated due to noise structure in
the data. Toward HD 27778 we find a 3 sigma abundance upper limit of <108 C
atoms in the gas per million H, a substantially enhanced depletion of C as
compared to the diffuse sightline value. The interstellar characteristics
toward HD 27778 are otherwise not extreme among the sample except for an
unusually large abundance of CO molecules in the gas.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journa
Two-Stage Rotational Disordering of a Molecular Crystal Surface: C60
We propose a two-stage mechanism for the rotational surface disordering phase
transition of a molecular crystal, as realized in C fullerite. Our
study, based on Monte Carlo simulations, uncovers the existence of a new
intermediate regime, between a low temperature ordered state,
and a high temperature disordered phase. In the intermediate
regime there is partial disorder, strongest for a subset of particularly
frustrated surface molecules. These concepts and calculations provide a
coherent understanding of experimental observations, with possible extension to
other molecular crystal surfaces.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
The experience of accommodating privacy restrictions during implementation of a large-scale surveillance study of an osteoporosis medication.
PurposeTo explore whether privacy restrictions developed to protect patients have complicated research within a 15-year surveillance study conducted with US cancer registries.MethodsData from enrolling 27 cancer registries over a 10-year period were examined to describe the amount of time needed to obtain study approval. We also analyzed the proportion of patients that completed a research interview out of the total reported by the registries and examined factors thought to influence this measure.ResultsThe average length of the research review process from submission to approval of the research was 7āmonths (range, <1 to 24āmonths), and it took 6āmonths or more to obtain approval of the research at 41% of the cancer registries. Most registries (78%) required additional permission steps to gain access to patients for research. After adjustment for covariates, the interview response proportion was 110% greater (ratio of response proportionā=ā2.1; 95% confidence interval: 1.3, 3.3) when the least restrictive versus the most restrictive permission steps were required. An interview was more often completed for patients (or proxies) if patients were alive, within a year of being diagnosed, or identified earlier in the study.ConclusionsLengthy research review processes increased the time between diagnosis and provision of patient information to the researcher. Requiring physician permission for access to patients was associated with lower subject participation. A single national point of entry for use of cancer registry data in health research is worthy of consideration to make the research approval process efficient. Ā© 2016 The Authors. Quantitative Assessment of Tissue Biomarkers and Construction of a Model to Predict Outcome in Breast Cancer Using Multiple Imputation
Missing data pose one of the greatest challenges in the rigorous evaluation of biomarkers. The limited availability of specimens with complete clinical annotation and quality biomaterial often leads to underpowered studies. Tissue microarray studies, for example, may be further handicapped by the loss of data points because of unevaluable staining, core loss, or the lack of tumor in the histospot. This paper presents a novel approach to these common problems in the context of a tissue protein biomarker analysis in a cohort of patients with breast cancer. Our analysis develops techniques based on multiple imputation to address the missing value problem. We first select markers using a training cohort, identifying a small subset of protein expression levels that are most useful in predicting patient survival. The best model is obtained by including both protein markers (including COX6C, GATA3, NAT1, and ESR1) and lymph node status. The use of either lymph node status or the four protein expression levels provides similar improvements in goodness-of-fit, with both significantly better than a baseline clinical model. Using the same multiple imputation strategy, we then validate the results out-of-sample on a larger independent cohort. Our approach of integrating multiple imputation with each stage of the analysis serves as an example that may be replicated or adapted in future studies with missing values
