Now the wars are over: The past, present and future of Scottish battlefields
Battlefield archaeology has provided a new way of appreciating historic battlefields. This paper provides a summary of the long history of warfare and conflict in Scotland which has given rise to a large number of battlefield sites. Recent moves to highlight the archaeological importance of these sites, in the form
of Historic Scotland’s Battlefields Inventory are discussed, along with some of the problems associated with the preservation and management of these important
cultural sites
Calorons in Weyl Gauge
We demonstrate by explicit construction that while the untwisted
Harrington-Shepard caloron is manifestly periodic in Euclidean time,
with period , when transformed to the Weyl () gauge,
the caloron gauge field is periodic only up to a large gauge
transformation, with winding number equal to the caloron's topological charge.
This helps clarify the tunneling interpretation of these solutions, and their

Calorons, instantons and constituent monopoles in SU(3) lattice gauge theory
We analyze the zero-modes of the Dirac operator in quenched SU(3) gauge
configurations at non-zero temperature and compare periodic and anti-periodic
temporal boundary conditions for the fermions. It is demonstrated that for the
different boundary conditions often the modes are localized at different
space-time points and have different sizes. Our observations are consistent
with patterns expected for Kraan - van Baal solutions of the classical
Yang-Mills equations. These solutions consist of constituent monopoles and the
zero-modes are localized on different constituents for different boundary
conditions. Our findings indicate that the excitations of the QCD vacuum are

New phase structure of the Nambu -- Jona - Lasinio model at nonzero chemical potential
It is shown that in the Nambu -- Jona - Lasinio model at nonzero chemical
potential there are two different massive phases with spontaneously broken
chiral symmetry. In one of them particle density is identically zero, in
another phase it is not equal to zero. The transition between phases is a phase

Proteomic analysis of the cerebrospinal fluid of patients with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease
So far, only the detection of 14-3-3 proteins in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) has been accepted as diagnostic criterion for Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). However, this assay cannot be used for screening because of the high rate of false-positive results, whereas patients with variant CJD are often negative for 14-3-3 proteins. The aim of this study was to compare the spot patterns of CSF by 2-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2D-PAGE) to search for a CJD-specific spot pattern. We analyzed the CSF of 28 patients {[}11 CJD, 9 Alzheimer's disease ( AD), 8 nondemented controls (NDC)] employing 2D-PAGE which was optimized for minimal volumes of CSF (0.1 ml; 7-cm strips). All samples were run at least three times, gels were silver stained and analyzed by an analysis software and manually revised. We could consistently match 268 spots which were then compared between all groups. By the use of 5 spots, we were able to differentiate CJD from AD or NDC with a sensitivity of 100%. CJD could also be distinguished from both groups by using a heuristic clustering algorithm of 2 spots. We conclude that this proteomic approach can differentiate CJD from other diseases and may serve as a model for other neurodegenerative diseases. Copyright (C) 2007 S. Karger AG, Basel
T Pyxidis: The First Cataclysmic Variable with a Collimated Jet
We present the first observational evidence for a collimated jet in a
cataclysmic variable system; the recurrent nova T Pyxidis. Optical spectra show
bipolar components of H with velocities , very similar
to those observed in the supersoft X-ray sources and in SS 433. We argue that a
key ingredient of the formation of jets in the supersoft X-ray sources and T
Pyx (in addition to an accretion disk threaded by a vertical magnetic field),

The Quantized Sigma Model Has No Continuum Limit in Four Dimensions. I. Theoretical Framework
The nonlinear sigma model for which the field takes its values in the coset
space is similar to quantum gravity in being
perturbatively nonrenormalizable and having a noncompact curved configuration
space. It is therefore a good model for testing nonperturbative methods that
may be useful in quantum gravity, especially methods based on lattice field
theory. In this paper we develop the theoretical framework necessary for
recognizing and studying a consistent nonperturbative quantum field theory of
the model. We describe the action, the geometry of the
configuration space, the conserved Noether currents, and the current algebra,
and we construct a version of the Ward-Slavnov identity that makes it easy to
switch from a given field to a nonlinearly related one. Renormalization of the
model is defined via the effective action and via current algebra. The two
definitions are shown to be equivalent. In a companion paper we develop a
lattice formulation of the theory that is particularly well suited to the sigma
model, and we report the results of Monte Carlo simulations of this lattice
model. These simulations indicate that as the lattice cutoff is removed the
theory becomes that of a pair of massless free fields. Because the geometry and
symmetries of these fields differ from those of the original model we conclude
that a continuum limit of the model which preserves

Arthropod pest control for UK oilseed rape – Comparing insecticide efficacies, side effects and alternatives
Oilseed rape (Brassica napus) is an important combinable break crop in the UK, which is largely protected from arthropod pests by insecticidal chemicals. Despite ongoing debate regarding the use of neonicotinoids, the dominant seed treatment ingredients used for this crop, there is little publicly available data comparing the efficacy of insecticides in controlling key arthropod pests or comparing the impacts on non-target species and the wider environment. To provide an insight into these matters, a UK-wide expert survey targeting agronomists and entomologists was conducted from March to June 2015. Based on the opinions of 90 respondents, an average of 20% yield loss caused by the key arthropod pests was expected to have occurred in the absence of insecticide treatments. Relatively older chemical groups were perceived to have lower efficacy for target pests than newer ones, partly due to the development of insecticide resistance. Without neonicotinoid seed treatments, a lack of good control for cabbage stem flea beetle was perceived. Wide spectrum foliar insecticide sprays were perceived to have significantly greater negative impacts than seed treatments on users' health, natural enemies, pollinators, soil and water, and many foliar active ingredients have had potential risks for non-target arthropod species in UK oilseed rape fields for the past 25 years. Overall, 72% of respondents opposed the neonicotinoid restriction, while 10% supported it. Opposition and support of the restriction were largely based on concerns for pollinators and the wider environment, highlighting the uncertainty over the side effects of neonicotinoid use. More people from the government and research institutes leaned towards neutrality over the issue, compared to those directly involved in growing the crop. Neonicotinoid restriction was expected to result in greater effort and expenditure on pest control and lower production (0–1 t/ha less). Alternatives for future oilseed rape protection were then discussed
The HIV-associated tuberculosis epidemic--when will we act?
Despite policies, strategies, and guidelines, the epidemic of HIV-associated tuberculosis continues to rage, particularly in southern Africa. We focus our attention on the regions with the greatest burden of disease, especially sub-Saharan Africa, and concentrate on prevention of tuberculosis in people with HIV infection, a challenge that has been greatly neglected. We argue for a much more aggressive approach to early diagnosis and treatment of HIV infection in affected communities, and propose urgent assessment of frequent testing for HIV and early start of antiretroviral treatment (ART). This approach should result in short-term and long-term declines in tuberculosis incidence through individual immune reconstitution and reduced HIV transmission. Implementation of the 3Is policy (intensified tuberculosis case finding, infection control, and isoniazid preventive therapy) for prevention of HIV-associated tuberculosis, combined with earlier start of ART, will reduce the burden of tuberculosis in people with HIV infection and provide a safe clinical environment for delivery of ART. Some progress is being made in provision of HIV care to HIV-infected patients with tuberculosis, but too few receive co-trimoxazole prophylaxis and ART. We make practical recommendations about how to improve this situation. Early HIV diagnosis and treatment, the 3Is, and a comprehensive package of HIV care, in association with directly observed therapy, short-course (DOTS) for tuberculosis, form the basis of prevention and control of HIV-associated tuberculosis. This call to action recommends that both HIV and tuberculosis programmes exhort implementation of strategies that are known to be effective, and test innovative strategies that could work.
