    Plasmacytoid Dendritic Cells Are Productively Infected and Activated through TLR-7 Early after Arenavirus Infection.

    The antiviral response is largely mediated by dendritic cells (DCs), including conventional (c) DCs that function as antigen-presenting cells, and plasmacytoid (p) DCs that produce type I interferons, making them an attractive target for viruses. We find that the Old World arenaviruses lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus clone 13 (LCMV Cl13) and Lassa virus bind pDCs to a greater extent than cDCs. Consistently, LCMV Cl13 targets pDCs early after in vivo infection of its natural murine host and establishes a productive and robust replication cycle. pDCs coproduce type I interferons and proinflammatory cytokines, with the former being induced in both infected and uninfected pDCs, demonstrating a dissociation from intrinsic virus replication. TLR7 globally mediates pDC responses, limits pDC viral load, and promotes rapid innate and adaptive immune cell activation. These early events likely help dictate the outcome of infections with arenaviruses and other DC-replicating viruses and shed light on potential therapeutic targets

    First direct observation of enhanced octupole collectivity in 146Ba

    The octupole strength present in the neutron-rich, radiocative nucleus 146Ba has been experimentally determined for the first time using Coulomb excitation. To achieve this, A=146 fission fragments from CARIBU were post-accelerated by the Argonne Tandem Linac Accelerator System (ATLAS) and impinged on a thin 208Pb target. Using the GRETINA γ-ray spectrometer and the CHICO2 heavy-ion counter, the reduced transition probability B(E3; 3-→0+) was determined as 48(+21-29) W.u. The new result provides further experimental evidence for the presence of a region of octupole deformation surrounding the neutron-rich barium isotopes

    γ -soft Ba 146 and the role of nonaxial shapes at N≈90

    Low-spin states in the neutron-rich, N=90 nuclide Ba146 were populated following ÎČ decay of Cs146, with the goal of clarifying the development of deformation in barium isotopes through delineation of their nonyrast structures. Fission fragments of Cs146 were extracted from a 1.7-Ci Cf252 source and mass selected using the CAlifornium Rare Ion Breeder Upgrade (CARIBU) facility. Low-energy ions were deposited at the center of a box of thin ÎČ detectors, surrounded by a highly efficient high-purity Ge array. The new Ba146 decay scheme now contains 31 excited levels extending up to ∌2.5 MeV excitation energy, double what was previously known. These data are compared to predictions from the interacting boson approximation (IBA) model. It appears that the abrupt shape change found at N=90 in Sm and Gd is much more gradual in Ba and Ce, due to an enhanced role of the Îł degree of freedom
