    A Case Study of Trust Issues in Scientific Video Collections

    In-situ video recording of underwater ecosystems is able to provide valuable information for biology research and natural resources management, e.g. changes in species abundance. Searching the videos manually, however, requires costly human effort. Our video analysis tool supports the key task of counting different species of fish, allowing marine biologists to query the video collection without watching the videos. To be suitable for scientific research on changes in species abundance, the video data must include data provenance information that reflects the potential biases introduced through the video processing.In order to trust the analyses made by the system, we need to provide expert users with sufficient information to allow them to interpret these potential biases. We conducted two user studies to design a user interface that includes data provenance information. Our qualitative analysis discusses the support for understanding the reliability of video analysis, and trusting the results it produces. Our main finding is that disclosing details about the video processing and provenance data allows biologists to compare the results with their traditional statistical methods, thus increasing their trust in the results

    Numerical Distribution of Lymphoid Nodules in the Human Sigmoid Colon, Rectosigmoidal Junction, Rectum, and Anal Canal

    There is little information on the numerical distribution of lymphoid nodules (LN) in distal segments of the human large bowel. A novel approach was therefore developed to assess the number of LN in the sigmoid colon, the rectosigmoid segment, the rectum, and the anal canal in humans. The distal large bowel from five cadavers was selected for quantitative study. The number of LN was scored macroscopically from the proximal sigmoid colon to the distal anal canal. A numerical distribution, previously unreported, consisting of two circular bands of LN was observed in each of the five cadavers. One band was located 3 cm proximal from the pectinate line and the other was located at the rectosigmoid segment. Significantly more LN occurred 3–5 cm proximal to the pectinate line compared to areas distal or proximal to this band of LN. This band of LN has not been reported previously in humans

    Optoacoustic solitons in Bragg gratings

    Optical gap solitons, which exist due to a balance of nonlinearity and dispersion due to a Bragg grating, can couple to acoustic waves through electrostriction. This gives rise to a new species of ``gap-acoustic'' solitons (GASs), for which we find exact analytic solutions. The GAS consists of an optical pulse similar to the optical gap soliton, dressed by an accompanying phonon pulse. Close to the speed of sound, the phonon component is large. In subsonic (supersonic) solitons, the phonon pulse is a positive (negative) density variation. Coupling to the acoustic field damps the solitons' oscillatory instability, and gives rise to a distinct instability for supersonic solitons, which may make the GAS decelerate and change direction, ultimately making the soliton subsonic.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    Eclogites and basement terrane tectonics in the northern arm of the Grenville orogen, NW Scotland

    The presence of eclogites within continental crust is a key indicator of collisional orogenesis. Eclogites within the Eastern Glenelg basement inlier of the Northern Highland Terrane (NHT) have been re-dated in order to provide more accurate constraints on the timing of collision within the northern arm of the Grenville Orogen. The eclog-ites yield dates of ca.1200 Ma which are interpreted to record the onset of continent-continent interaction, and the NHT as a whole is thought to represent the lower plate in successive 1200-1000 Ma collision events. The Eastern Glenelg basement inlier is viewed as a fragment of the leading edge of the NHT continental basement that was partially subducted along a suture and then exhumed back up the subduction channel. Differences in ages of igneous protoliths and intrusive histories, and metamorphic events (this paper) between the NHT basement and the Laurentian foreland, suggests that they were separate crustal blocks until after ca. 1600 Ma. We therefore suggest that: (1) the NHT represents a fragment of Archean-Paleoproterozoic crust that was reworked within the ca. 1.7-1.6 Ga Labradorian-Gothian belt, although whether it was derived from Laurentia or Baltica is uncertain, and (2) amalgamation of the NHT with the Laurentian foreland did not occur until the terminal stages of the Grenville collision at ca. 1000 Ma

    A Video Processing and Data Retrieval Framework for Fish Population Monitoring

    In this work we present a framework for fish population monitoring through the analysis of underwater videos. We specifically focus on the user information needs, and on the dynamic data extraction and retrieval mechanisms that support them. Sophisticated though a software tool may be, it is ultimately important that its interface satisfies users' actual needs and that users can easily focus on the specific data of interest. In the case of fish population monitoring, marine biologists have to interact with a system which not only provides information from a biological point of view, but also offers instruments to let them guide the video processing task for both video and algorithm selection. This paper aims at describing the system's underlying video processing and workflow low-level details, and their connection to the user interface for on-demand data retrieval by biologists

    Consumption of an omega-3 fatty acids product, INCELL AAFA™, reduced side-effects of CPT-11 (irinotecan) in mice

    INCELL AAFA™, an omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid product containing a high concentration of long chain fatty acids, was tested for its ability to ameliorate the harmful side effects of CPT-11 chemotherapy including: leukopenia, anaemia, asthenia, weight loss and liver involvement. Four groups of mice were fed an AIN-76 diet modified to contain: 10% w/w corn oil (CO), 0% AAFA™; 9% CO, 1% AAFA™; 8% CO, 2% AAFA™; or 7% CO, 3% AAFA™. After 2 weeks on the diets, half of the mice received CPT-11 chemotherapy (60 mg kg−1 q 4 days, i.v.) the rest of the mice received vehicle for 2 weeks. It was found that 2% AAFA™ in the diet of the CPT-11 treated mice: decreased apoptotic figures in the duodenal crypts; markedly suppressed the inflammatory eicosanoid, prostaglandin E2 in the liver; prevented liver hypertrophy; improved white blood cell counts; significantly increased red blood cell counts; decreased numbers of CPT-11 induced immature red blood cell and micronuclei in red blood cells of the peripheral blood; increased eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid in liver cell membranes and maintained normal grooming behaviour. Thus 2% AAFA™ in the diet reduced the side effects of CPT-11 treatment in mice

    Evidence that a Major Portion of Cellular Potassium is Bound

    In this report we briefly review recent evidence which shows that a substantial proportion of intracellular K+ is bound or perturbed from the physicochemical properties expected in dilute aqueous solutions. In addition, we present evidence from electron probe x-ray microanalysis of thin cryosections of cells which indicates that the binding of K+ to anionic groups either carboxyl groups (HCO2) on proteins or to phosphate groups in creatine phosphate (CrP) , in adenosine triphosphate, (ATP), in protein and in nucleic acids, are the main determinants of the maintenance of (as differentiated from the generated of) the well known intra- to extracellular K+ concentration difference. The collective evidence suggests that much of cellular K+ is reduced in its mobility and in its chemical activity due to association with negative charge groups (e.g. carboxyl and phosphates). This fact forces abandonment of the misleading assumption that the majority of intracellular K+ and other inorganic ions are as free as would be expected under ideal solution conditions. This realization should have far reaching consequences toward understanding transmembrane movement of water and solutes in cells

    Inferring phytoplankton carbon and eco-physiological rates from diel cycles of spectral particulate beam-attenuation coefficient

    The diurnal fluctuations in solar irradiance impose a fundamental frequency on ocean biogeochemistry. Observations of the ocean carbon cycle at these frequencies are rare, but could be considerably expanded by measuring and interpreting the inherent optical properties. A method is presented to analyze diel cycles in particulate beam-attenuation coefficient (<i>c</i><sub>p</sub>) measured at multiple wavelengths. The method is based on fitting observations with a size-structured population model coupled to an optical model to infer the particle size distribution and physiologically relevant parameters of the cells responsible for the measured diel cycle in <i>c</i><sub>p</sub>. Results show that the information related to size and contained in the spectral data can be exploited to independently estimate growth and loss rates during the day and night. In addition, the model can characterize the population of particles affecting the diel variability in <i>c</i><sub>p</sub>. Application of this method to spectral <i>c</i><sub>p</sub> measured at a station in the oligotrophic Mediterranean Sea suggests that most of the observed variations in <i>c</i><sub>p</sub> can be ascribed to a synchronized population of cells with an equivalent spherical diameter around 4.6±1.5 μm. The inferred carbon biomass of these cells was about 5.2–6.0 mg m<sup>−3</sup> and accounted for approximately 10% of the total particulate organic carbon. If successfully validated, this method may improve our in situ estimates of primary productivity
