    A Population of Taphromysis louisianae (Banner); (Crustacea: Mysidae) in a Clermont County Ohio River Wetland

    Author Institution: Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences, Morehead State UniversityA reproducing population of Taphromysis louisianae was found in a shallow freshwater tributary of the Ohio River in Clermont County, OH throughout 1990-91. The nearest distribution record is in Louisiana. Therefore, this is the first record of this normally brackish water species in the Ohio River Basin. Analysis of habitat reveals that the population prefers shallow water (< 1 m) with leafy, high organic matter (about 8% of the soil dry weight) substrate. At the Ohio discovery site salinity was below limits of detection; the average pH was 6.5, and the mean dissolved oxygen concentration was 10 mg I1. This is in contrast to the higher salinity habitat of this species in bays and ditches of tidal areas. Because of distance and physiochemical disparities between the Gulf Coast and Ohio habitats, it is suggested that the isolated inland population exhibits characteristics of the early stages of speciation

    Amphibian declines and extinctions have been documented around the world, often in protected natural areas. Concern for this trend has prompted the U.S. Geological Survey and the National Park Service to document all species of amphibians that occur within U.S. National Parks and to search for any signs that amphibians may be declining. This study, an inventory of amphibian species in Big Cypress National Preserve, was conducted from 2002 to 2003. The goals of the project were to create a georeferenced inventory of amphibian species, use new analytical techniques to estimate proportion of sites occupied by each species, look for any signs of amphibian decline (missing species, disease, die-offs, and so forth.), and to establish a protocol that could be used for future monitoring efforts. Several sampling methods were used to accomplish these goals. Visual encounter surveys and anuran vocalization surveys were conducted in all habitats throughout the park to estimate the proportion of sites or proportion of area occupied (PAO) by each amphibian species in each habitat. Opportunistic collections, as well as limited drift fence data, were used to augment the visual encounter methods for highly aquatic or cryptic species. A total of 545 visits to 104 sites were conducted for standard sampling alone, and 2,358 individual amphibians and 374 reptiles were encountered. Data analysis was conducted in program PRESENCE to provide PAO estimates for each of the anuran species. All of the amphibian species historically found in Big Cypress National Preserve were detected during this project. At least one individual of each of the four salamander species was captured during sampling. Each of the anuran species in the preserve was adequately sampled using standard herpetological sampling methods, and PAO estimates were produced for each species of anuran by habitat. This information serves as an indicator of habitat associations of the species and relative abundance of sites occupied, but it will also be useful as a comparative baseline for future monitoring efforts. In addition to sampling for amphibians, all encounters with reptiles were documented. The sampling methods used for detecting amphibians are also appropriate for many reptile species. These reptile locations are included in this report, but the number of reptile observations was not sufficient to estimate PAO for reptile species. We encountered 35 of the 46 species of reptiles believed to be present in Big Cypress National Preserve during this study, and evidence exists of the presence of four other reptile species in the Preserve. This study found no evidence of amphibian decline in Big Cypress National Preserve. Although no evidence of decline was observed, several threats to amphibians were identified. Introduced species, especially the Cuban treefrog (Osteopilus septentrionalis), are predators and competitors with several native frog species. The recreational use of off-road vehicles has the potential to affect some amphibian populations, and a study on those potential impacts is currently underway. Also, interference by humans with the natural hydrologic cycle of south Florida has the potential to alter the amphibian community. Continued monitoring of the amphibian species in Big Cypress National Preserve is recommended. The methods used in this study were adequate to produce reliable estimates of the proportion of sites occupied by most anuran species, and are a cost-effective means of determining the status of their populations

    The Rate of Type Ia Supernovae at High Redshift

    We derive the rates of Type Ia supernovae (SNIa) over a wide range of redshifts using a complete sample from the IfA Deep Survey. This sample of more than 100 SNIa is the largest set ever collected from a single survey, and therefore uniquely powerful for a detailed supernova rate (SNR) calculation. Measurements of the SNR as a function of cosmological time offer a glimpse into the relationship between the star formation rate (SFR) and Type Ia SNR, and may provide evidence for the progenitor pathway. We observe a progressively increasing Type Ia SNR between redshifts z~0.3-0.8. The Type Ia SNR measurements are consistent with a short time delay (t~1 Gyr) with respect to the SFR, indicating a fairly prompt evolution of SNIa progenitor systems. We derive a best-fit value of SFR/SNR 580 h_70^(-2) M_solar/SNIa for the conversion factor between star formation and SNIa rates, as determined for a delay time of t~1 Gyr between the SFR and the Type Ia SNR. More complete measurements of the Type Ia SNR at z>1 are necessary to conclusively determine the SFR--SNR relationship and constrain SNIa evolutionary pathways.Comment: 37 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal.     This study aims to determine the effect of the application of the think pair and share model learning on acid-base material using surrounding materials and tools on student learning outcomes in the experimental class and control class XI Mia SMA N 1 Tombatu. The research sample was students of class XI Mia 1 and XI Mia 2. The results showed that there were differences in student learning outcomes in the experimental class compared to students in the control class who used conventional learning models. Where the average student learning outcomes Experiment class is 81.6 and the average student learning outcomes Control class is 73.9. It can be concluded that the Think Pair and Share (TPS) model of cooperative learning has an influence on the learning outcomes of experimental and control students on acid-base material. Therefore, it can be suggested that the Think Pair and Share (TPS) model of active learning activates students in the learning process in order to improve student learning outcomes.Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh penerapan pembelajaran model think pair and share pada materi asam-basa menggunakan alat dan bahan disekitar terhadap hasil belajar siswa kelas eksperimen dan kelas kontrol XI Mia SMA N 1 Tombatu. Sampel penelitian adalah siswa kelas XI Mia 1 dan XI Mia 2. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa terdapat perbedaan hasil belajar siswa kelas eksperimen dibandingkan dengan siswa kelas kontrol yang menggunakan model pembelajaran konfensional. Dimana rata-rata hasil belajar siswa kelas Eksperimen adalah 81.6 dan rata-rata hasil belajar siswa kelas Kontrol adalah 73.9. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa pembelajaran kooperatif model Think Pair and Share (TPS) mempunyai pengaruh terhadap hasil belajar siswa eksperimen dan kontrol pada materi Asam-basa.     Facile synthesis of metal-free organic dyes featuring a thienylethynyl spacer for dye sensitized solar cells

    In this article, we report the facile synthesis of metal-free dyes 6 and 7, their solution-based optical and redox properties and their use as sensitizers in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Our studies indicate that the addition of the second thiophene unit in dye 7, decreases the oxidation and reduction potential and consequently the band gap of the molecule compared to 6. Furthermore, increasing the length of the conjugated spacer also affects on the properties of the DSSCs, with dye 7 providing a higher power conversion efficiency compared to 6 (η = 4.49 versus 3.23%)

Does the tectonic deformation within the quadrangle record significant regional patterns that vary spatially or temporally, and if so what are the scales, orientations and sources of the stress fields driving this deformation? If mantle upwelling and downwelling have played a significant role in the formation of Atla Regio and Atalanta Planitia as has been proposed, does the geology of Ganiki Planitia record evidence of northwest-directed lateral mantle flow connecting the two sites? Finally, can integration of the tectonic and volcanic histories preserved within the quadrangle help constrain competing resurfacing models for Venus
