    Relationship between Economic Growth and Debt: An Empirical Analysis for Sub-Saharan Africa

    In this study, we examine the connection between economic growth and debt, with the question in mind -“Is debt a burden and bad for economic growth? Employing several sophisticated statistical approaches to investigate the problem and to assess the impact of debt on economic growth in 48 countries of Sub-Saharan Africa from 1995 to 2012, we find evidence of Granger causality between debt and economic growth in 8 out of the 48 sub-Saharan countries during the period of study and validate for the existence of “Debt Laffer Curve.” We also study the relationship between debt and economic growth rate in Granger causality and Dynamic Arellano-Bond panel data estimation frameworks, and find evidence of a negative correlation between the two variables (Debt and GDP) and confirm the findings by testing several versions of the models. Political decision and economic policy are intertwined and need to be examined carefully when implemented for economic growth and our findings lend credence to the politically unpopular austerity measures (constraints on government spending financed by borrowing). There is a limit to the economic growth rate that the government financed expenditure can bring. If the burden of debt is too high then there is a negative impact of debt on the economic growth.Keywords. Economic Growth, Debt, Laffer curve and Investments.JEL. E20, E60, E24

    i-rDNA: alignment-free algorithm for rapid in silico detection of ribosomal gene fragments from metagenomic sequence data sets

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Obtaining accurate estimates of microbial diversity using rDNA profiling is the first step in most metagenomics projects. Consequently, most metagenomic projects spend considerable amounts of time, money and manpower for experimentally cloning, amplifying and sequencing the rDNA content in a metagenomic sample. In the second step, the entire genomic content of the metagenome is extracted, sequenced and analyzed. Since DNA sequences obtained in this second step also contain rDNA fragments, rapid <it>in silico</it> identification of these rDNA fragments would drastically reduce the cost, time and effort of current metagenomic projects by entirely bypassing the experimental steps of primer based rDNA amplification, cloning and sequencing. In this study, we present an algorithm called i-rDNA that can facilitate the rapid detection of 16S rDNA fragments from amongst millions of sequences in metagenomic data sets with high detection sensitivity.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Performance evaluation with data sets/database variants simulating typical metagenomic scenarios indicates the significantly high detection sensitivity of i-rDNA. Moreover, i-rDNA can process a million sequences in less than an hour on a simple desktop with modest hardware specifications.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>In addition to the speed of execution, high sensitivity and low false positive rate, the utility of the algorithmic approach discussed in this paper is immense given that it would help in bypassing the entire experimental step of primer-based rDNA amplification, cloning and sequencing.     HabiSign: a novel approach for comparison of metagenomes and rapid identification of habitat-specific sequences

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>One of the primary goals of comparative metagenomic projects is to study the differences in the microbial communities residing in diverse environments. Besides providing valuable insights into the inherent structure of the microbial populations, these studies have potential applications in several important areas of medical research like disease diagnostics, detection of pathogenic contamination and identification of hitherto unknown pathogens. Here we present a novel and rapid, alignment-free method called HabiSign, which utilizes patterns of tetra-nucleotide usage in microbial genomes to bring out the differences in the composition of both diverse and related microbial communities.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Validation results show that the metagenomic signatures obtained using the HabiSign method are able to accurately cluster metagenomes at biome, phenotypic and species levels, as compared to an average tetranucleotide frequency based approach and the recently published dinucleotide relative abundance based approach. More importantly, the method is able to identify subsets of sequences that are specific to a particular habitat. Apart from this, being alignment-free, the method can rapidly compare and group multiple metagenomic data sets in a short span of time.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The proposed method is expected to have immense applicability in diverse areas of metagenomic research ranging from disease diagnostics and pathogen detection to bio-prospecting.     Metagenome of the gut of a malnourished child

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Malnutrition, a major health problem, affects a significant proportion of preschool children in developing countries. The devastating consequences of malnutrition include diarrhoea, malabsorption, increased intestinal permeability, suboptimal immune response, etc. Nutritional interventions and dietary solutions have not been effective for treatment of malnutrition till date. Metagenomic procedures allow one to access the complex cross-talk between the gut and its microbial flora and understand how a different community composition affects various states of human health. In this study, a metagenomic approach was employed for analysing the differences between gut microbial communities obtained from a malnourished and an apparently healthy child.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Our results indicate that the malnourished child gut has an abundance of enteric pathogens which are known to cause intestinal inflammation resulting in malabsorption of nutrients. We also identified a few functional sub-systems from these pathogens, which probably impact the overall metabolic capabilities of the malnourished child gut.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The present study comprehensively characterizes the microbial community resident in the gut of a malnourished child. This study has attempted to extend the understanding of the basis of malnutrition beyond nutrition deprivation.</p

    Patient preferences for different methods of blood pressure measurement: is ethnicity relevant?

Aim:\textit{Aim:} To determine the acceptability of different methods of measuring blood pressure to people from different ethnic minority groups. Design and setting:\textit{Design and setting:} Cross sectional study with focus groups in primary care. Methods:\textit{Methods:} People with and without hypertension of different ethnicities were assessed for acceptability of clinic, home and ambulatory blood pressure measurement using completion rate, questionnaire and focus groups. Results:\textit{Results:} 770 participants were included comprising white British (n=300), South Asian (n=241) and African Caribbean (n=229). White British participants had significantly higher successful completion rates across all monitoring modalities compared to the other ethnic groups, especially for ambulatory monitoring: white British (277 completed, 92%[89-95%]) vs South Asian (171, 71%[65-76%], p<0.001 and African Caribbean (188, 82%[77-87%], p<0.001) respectively. There were significantly lower acceptability scores for minority ethnic participants across all monitoring methods compared to white British. Focus group results highlighted self-monitoring as most acceptable and ambulatory monitoring least without consistent differences by ethnicity. Clinic monitoring was seen as inconvenient and anxiety provoking but with the advantage of immediate professional input. Conclusions:\textit{Conclusions:} Reduced acceptability and completion rates amongst minority ethnic groups raise important questions for the implementation and interpretation of blood pressure monitoring in general and ambulatory monitoring in particular.     iVikodak—A Platform and Standard Workflow for Inferring, Analyzing, Comparing, and Visualizing the Functional Potential of Microbial Communities

    Background: The objectives of any metagenomic study typically include identification of resident microbes and their relative proportions (taxonomic analysis), profiling functional diversity (functional analysis), and comparing the identified microbes and functions with available metadata (comparative metagenomics). Given the advantage of cost-effectiveness and convenient data-size, amplicon-based sequencing has remained the technology of choice for exploring phylogenetic diversity of an environment. A recent school of thought, employing the existing genome annotation information for inferring functional capacity of an identified microbiome community, has given a promising alternative to Whole Genome Shotgun sequencing for functional analysis. Although a handful of tools are currently available for function inference, their scope, functionality and utility has essentially remained limited. Need for a comprehensive framework that expands upon the existing scope and enables a standardized workflow for function inference, analysis, and visualization, is therefore felt.Methods: We present iVikodak, a multi-modular web-platform that hosts a logically inter-connected repertoire of functional inference and analysis tools, coupled with a comprehensive visualization interface. iVikodak is equipped with microbial co-inhabitance pattern driven published algorithms along with multiple updated databases of various curated microbe-function maps. It also features an advanced task management and result sharing system through introduction of personalized and portable dashboards.Results: In addition to inferring functions from 16S rRNA gene data, iVikodak enables (a) an in-depth analysis of specific functions of interest (b) identification of microbes contributing to various functions (c) microbial interaction patterns through function-driven correlation networks, and (d) simultaneous functional comparison between multiple microbial communities. We have bench-marked iVikodak through multiple case studies and comparisons with existing state of art. We also introduce the concept of a public repository which provides a first of its kind community-driven framework for scientific data analytics, collaboration and sharing in this area of microbiome research.Conclusion: Developed using modern design and task management practices, iVikodak provides a multi-modular, yet inter-operable, one-stop framework, that intends to simplify the entire approach toward inferred function analysis.     Clinico-epidemiological study of childhood psoriasis

    The clinico-epidemiological data of 276 childhood psoriasis were studied. The mean age was 7.64 years (range 1 day to 15 years). There was no complain of any discomfort in 198 cases. Itching was present in 67 cases and burning in 11 cases. Plaque psoriasis was the most common type (68.8%) followed by guttate (18.8%). Erythrodermic and pustular psoriasis were found in 2.2% and 1.5% cases. Scalp was the most frequently affected site (75.36%) followed by extensors of extremities (41.3%), trunk (37.7%), palm and/or sole (13.0%) and diaper area (11.6%). Nail involvement was found only in 8%, joint was affected in 3.6% and only 2.2% children with psoriasis were erythrodermic. In Bangladeshi children with psoriasis, plaque is the most common type and scalp is the mostly affect site. Nail and joint involvement is less common. Pustular and erythrodermic psoriasis is rare

    Ethnicity and differences between clinic and ambulatory blood pressure measurements.

    BACKGROUND: This study investigated the relationship of ethnicity to the differences between blood pressure (BP) measured in a clinic setting and by ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) in individuals with a previous diagnosis of hypertension (HT) and without a previous diagnosis of hypertension (NHT). METHODS: A cross-sectional comparison of BP measurement was performed in 770 participants (white British (WB, 39%), South Asian (SA, 31%), and African Caribbean (AC, 30%)) in 28 primary care clinics in West Midlands, United Kingdom. Mean differences between daytime ABPM, standardized clinic (mean of 3 occasions), casual clinic (first reading on first occasion), and last routine BP taken at the general practitioner practice were compared in HT and NHT individuals. RESULTS: Daytime systolic and diastolic ABPM readings were similar to standardized clinic BP (systolic: 128 (SE 0.9) vs. 125 (SE 0.9) mm Hg (NHT) and 132 (SE 0.7) vs. 131 (SE 0.7) mm Hg (HT)) and were not associated with ethnicity to a clinically important extent. When BP was taken less carefully, differences emerged: casual clinic readings were higher than ABPM, particularly in the HT group where the systolic differences approached clinical relevance (131 (SE 1.2) vs. 129 (SE 1.0) mm Hg (NHT) and 139 (SE 0.9) vs. 133 (SE 0.7) mm Hg (HT)) and were larger in SA and AC hypertensive individuals (136 (SE 1.5) vs. 133 (SE 1.2) mm Hg (WB), 141 (SE 1.7) vs. 133 (SE 1.4) mm Hg (SA), and 142 (SE 1.6) vs. 134 (SE 1.3) mm Hg (AC); mean differences: 3 (0-7), P = 0.03 and 4 (1-7), P = 0.01, respectively). Differences were also observed for the last practice reading in SA and ACs. CONCLUSIONS: BP differences between ethnic groups where BP is carefully measured on multiple occasions are small and unlikely to alter clinical management.     Sustainable environment through using porous materials:a review on wastewater treatment

    Porous materials play an important role in creating a sustainable environment by improving wastewater treatment's efficacy. Porous materials, including adsorbents or ion exchangers, catalysts, metal–organic frameworks, composites, carbon materials, and membranes, have widespread applications in treating wastewater and air pollution. This review examines recent developments in porous materials, focusing on their effectiveness for different wastewater pollutants. Specifically, they can treat a wide range of water contaminants, and many remove over 95% of targeted contaminants. Recent advancements include a wider range of adsorption options, heterogeneous catalysis, a new UV/H2O2 procedure, ion exchange, Fenton oxidation, membrane activities, ozonation, membrane bioreactor, electrochemical treatment, wet air oxidation, and a carbon capture methodology utilizing various porous materials. A particular focus for innovative research is on developing technologies to synthesize porous materials and assess their performance in removing various pollutants from wastewater at varying experimental conditions. Porous materials can be essential in designing wastewater treatment systems to address the critical environmental issues of water stress and safe drinking water worldwide.</p
