Dimensions of fractals related to languages defined by tagged strings in complete genomes

    Get PDF
A representation of frequency of strings of length K in complete genomes of many organisms in a square has led to seemingly self-similar patterns when K increases. These patterns are caused by under-represented strings with a certain "tag"-string and they define some fractals when K tends to infinite. The Box and Hausdorff dimensions of the limit set are discussed. Although the method proposed by Mauldin and Williams to calculate Box and Hausdorff dimension is valid in our case, a different and simpler method is proposed in this paper.Comment: 9 pages with two figure

Chaos and bifurcations in chaotic maps with parameter q: Numerical and analytical studies

    Get PDF
In this paper, a class of chaotic maps with parameter q are introduced and bifurcations and chaos in proposed maps are numerical and analytical studied. Euler method is employed to get the continuous systems corresponding to chaotic maps and the fractional styles in Caputo's definition. Based on that, we finally infer a class of chaotic maps with the Adams–Bashforth–Moulton predictor-corrector method. In the simulation and analysis, we discuss the Logistic map with q and HĂ©non map with q, observe the route from period to chaos and do tests to analyze properties of maps with parameter q

THE KINEMATICS CHAIN OF INSTEP KICKING OF SOCCER WITH UPPERBODY CONSTRAINED: A PILOT STUDY

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to understand the kicking performance when the upperbody motion has been limited. One player in the college cup level A volunteered to participate in this study (Aged: 20 years, Height: 172 cm, Body mass: 65 kg). A VICON motion capture system (200 Hz) was used to capture the kicking motion. The participant was asked to kick the ball both using an arm swing and not using an arm swing. The Visual3D was used to calculate the segment velocity, angular velocity, and kinetic chain. The results indicated that kicking with arm swing had a greater ball and lower-extrimity segment velocity. The main effect for lower ball velocity during kicking without arm swing is the decreased angular velocity at the ankle joint. When arm motion has been limited, players should noticed that the ankle joint needs to follow through after foot-ball contact

Development of a coupling algorithm for fluid-structure interaction analysis of submerged aquaculture nets

    Get PDF
A coupling algorithm between two open-source numerical toolboxes, i.e., OpenFOAM and Code_Aster, is implemented for fluid-structure interaction analysis of submerged nets. This algorithm is developed to handle the wake effects of thin, flexible and highly permeable structures with complex geometries. Compared to previous approaches, the present algorithm simplifies the procedures of the model preparation by removing additional data-fitting processes for porous coefficients, and improves the accuracy of structural responses by employing a fluid solver to calculate the flow field and a superior Screen model to calculate the hydrodynamic forces. The coupling algorithm is comprehensively described and validated with published experiments for both fixed and flexible nets. Different solidities, inflow angles, incoming velocities and dimensions of nets are also considered. The comparisons of flow velocity in the wake, deformation of flexible nets and drag force on the full-scale fish cage show that the numerical results obtained from the present coupling algorithm are in good agreement with published experimental data.publishedVersio

Do matrix metalloproteinase and cathepsin K inhibitors work synergistically to reduce dentin erosion?

Objectives: To evaluate the effects of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) and cathepsin K (catK) inhibitors on resistance to dentin erosion. Methodology: A total of 96 dentin specimens (3Ă—3Ă—2 mm) were prepared and randomly assigned into four groups (n=24): deionized water (DW); 1 µM odanacatib (ODN, catK inhibitor); 1 mM 1,10-phenanthroline (PHEN, MMP inhibitor); and 1 µM odanacatib + 1 mM 1,10-phenanthroline (COM). Each group was further divided into two subgroups for the application of treatment solutions before (PRE) and after erosive challenges (POST). All specimens were subjected to four daily erosive challenges for 5 d. For each erosive challenge, the specimens in subgroup PRE were immersed in the respective solutions before cola drinks, while the specimens in subgroup POST were immersed in the respective solutions after cola drinks (the immersion duration was 5 min in both cases). All specimens were stored in artificial saliva at 37°C between erosive challenges. The erosive dentin loss (EDL) was measured by profilometry. The residual demineralized organic matrix (DOM) of specimens was removed using type VII collagenase and evaluated by profilometry. Both the EDL and thickness of the residual DOM were statistically analyzed by two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Bonferroni’s test (α=0.05). The surface topography and transverse sections of the specimens were observed using SEM. MMPs and catK were immunolabeled in the eroded dentin and in situ zymography was performed to evaluate the enzyme activity. Results: Significantly lower EDL was found in the groups ODN, PHEN, and COM than in the control group (all p<0.05), while no significant difference in EDL was found among the groups ODN, PHEN, and COM (all p>0.05). The application sequence showed no significant effect on the EDL of the tested groups (p=0.310). A significantly thicker DOM was observed in the group ODN than in the control group regardless of the application sequence (both p<0.05). The treatment with ODN, PHEN, and COM inhibited the gelatinolytic activity by approximately 46.32%, 58.6%, and 74.56%, respectively. Conclusions: The inhibition of endogenous dentinal MMPs and catK increases the acid resistance of human dentin but without an apparent synergistic effect. The inhibition of MMPs and catK is equally effective either before or after the acid challenge
