Mean Field Fluid Behavior of the Gaussian Core Model

We show that the Gaussian core model of particles interacting via a penetrable repulsive Gaussian potential, first considered by Stillinger (J. Chem. Phys. 65, 3968 (1976)), behaves like a weakly correlated ``mean field fluid'' over a surprisingly wide density and temperature range. In the bulk the structure of the fluid phase is accurately described by the random phase approximation for the direct correlation function, and by the more sophisticated HNC integral equation. The resulting pressure deviates very little from a simple, mean-field like, quadratic form in the density, while the low density virial expansion turns out to have an extremely small radius of convergence. Density profiles near a hard wall are also very accurately described by the corresponding mean-field free-energy functional. The binary version of the model exhibits a spinodal instability against de-mixing at high densities. Possible implications for semi-dilute polymer solutions are discussed.Comment: 13 pages, 2 columns, ReVTeX epsfig, multicol, amssym, 15 figures; submitted to Phys. Rev. Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics Simulation of Liquid Ga_xAs_{1-x} Alloys

We report the results of ab initio molecular dynamics simulations of liquid Ga_xAs_{1-x} alloys at five different concentrations, at a temperature of 1600 K, just above the melting point of GaAs. The liquid is predicted to be metallic at all concentrations between x = 0.2 and x = 0.8, with a weak resistivity maximum near x = 0.5, consistent with the Faber-Ziman expression. The electronic density of states is finite at the Fermi energy for all concentrations; there is, however, a significant pseudogap especially in the As-rich samples. The Ga-rich density of states more closely resembles that of a free-electron metal. The partial structure factors show only a weak indication of chemical short-range order. There is also some residue of the covalent bonding found in the solid, which shows up in the bond-angle distribution functions of the liquid state. Finally, the atomic diffusion coefficients at 1600K are calculated to be 2.1 \times 10^{-4} cm^2/sec for Ga ions in Ga_{0.8}As_{0.2} and 1.7 \times 10^{-4} cm^2/sec for As ions in Ga_{0.2}As_{0.8}.Comment: 29 pages, 10 eps figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Temperature dependence of the breakdown of the quantum Hall effect studied by induced currents

    Get PDF
Copyright © 2004 The American Physical SocietyWe have developed a model of the high-current breakdown of the integer quantum Hall effect, as measured in contactless experiments using a highly-sensitive torsion balance magnetometer. The model predicts that, for empirically “low-mobility” samples (μ<75 m2 V−1 s−1), the critical current for breakdown should decrease with, and have a linear dependence on, temperature. This prediction is verified experimentally with the addition of a low-temperature saturation of the critical current at a temperature that depends on both sample number density and filling factor. It is shown that this saturation is consistent with quasielastic inter-Landau-level scattering when the maximum electric field in the sample reaches a large enough value. In addition we show how this model can be extended to give qualitative agreement with experiments on high-mobility samples

Mesoscopic Fano Effect in a Quantum Dot Embedded in an Aharonov-Bohm Ring

The Fano effect, which occurs through the quantum-mechanical cooperation between resonance and interference, can be observed in electron transport through a hybrid system of a quantum dot and an Aharonov-Bohm ring. While a clear correlation appears between the height of the Coulomb peak and the real asymmetric parameter qq for the corresponding Fano lineshape, we need to introduce a complex qq to describe the variation of the lineshape by the magnetic and electrostatic fields. The present analysis demonstrates that the Fano effect with complex asymmetric parameters provides a good probe to detect a quantum-mechanical phase of traversing electrons.Comment: REVTEX, 9 pages including 8 figure

Measurement of event shape distributions and moments in e+e- -> hadrons at 91-209 GeV and a determination of alpha_s

We have studied hadronic events from e+e- annihilation data at centre-of-mass energies from 91 to 209 GeV. We present distributions of event shape observables and their moments at each energy and compare with QCD Monte Carlo models. From the event shape distributions we extract the strong coupling alpha_s and test its evolution with energy scale. The results are consistent with the running of alpha_s expected from QCD. Combining all data, the value of alpha_s(M_Z) is determined to be alpha_s(M_Z) = 0.1191 +- 0.0005 (stat.) +- 0.0010 (expt.) +- 0.0011 (hadr.) +- 0.0044 (theo.). The energy evolution of the moments is also used to determine a value of alpha_s with slightly larger errors: alpha_s(M_Z) = 0.1223 +- 0.0005 (stat.) +- 0.0014 (expt.) +- 0.0016 (hadr.) +0.0054 -0.0036 (theo.).Comment: 63 pages 26 fi

Flavour Independent hA Search and Two Higgs Doublet Model Interpretation of Neutral Higgs Boson Searches at LEP

Upper limits on the cross-section of the pair-production process e+e- -> h0A0 assuming 100% decays into hadrons, are derived from a new search for the h0A0 -> hadrons topology, independent of the hadronic flavour of the decay products. Searches for the neutral Higgs bosons h0 and A0, are used to obtain constraints on the Type II Two Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM(11)) with no CP violation in the Higgs sector and no additional non Standard Model particles besides the five Higgs bosons. The analysis combines LEP1 and LEP2 data collected with the OPAL detctor up to the highest available centre-of-mass energies. The searches are sensitive to the h0, A0 -> qq, gg,tau+tau- and h0 -> A0A0 decay modes of the Higgs bosons. The 2HDM(II) parameter space is explored in a detailed scan. Large regions of the 2HDM(II) parameter space are excluded at the 95% CL in the (mh, mA), (mh, tanb) and (mA, tanb) planes, using both direct neutral Higgs boson searches and indirect limits derived from Standard Model high precision measurements. The region 1 lesssim mh lesssim 55 GeV and 3 lesssim mA lesssim 63 GeV is excluded at 95% CL independently of the choice of the 2HDM(II) parameters.Comment: 37 pages, 11 figures, Submitted to Eur. Measurement of the partial widths of the Z into up- and down-type quarks

Using the entire OPAL LEP1 on-peak Z hadronic decay sample, Z -> qbarq gamma decays were selected by tagging hadronic final states with isolated photon candidates in the electromagnetic calorimeter. Combining the measured rates of Z -> qbarq gamma decays with the total rate of hadronic Z decays permits the simultaneous determination of the widths of the Z into up- and down-type quarks. The values obtained, with total errors, were Gamma u = 300 ^{+19}_{-18} MeV and Gamma d = 381 ^{+12}_{-12} MeV. The results are in good agreement with the Standard Model expectation.Comment: 22 pages, 5 figures, Submitted to Phys. Letts.

Search for R-Parity Violating Decays of Scalar Fermions at LEP

A search for pair-produced scalar fermions under the assumption that R-parity is not conserved has been performed using data collected with the OPAL detector at LEP. The data samples analysed correspond to an integrated luminosity of about 610 pb-1 collected at centre-of-mass energies of sqrt(s) 189-209 GeV. An important consequence of R-parity violation is that the lightest supersymmetric particle is expected to be unstable. Searches of R-parity violating decays of charged sleptons, sneutrinos and squarks have been performed under the assumptions that the lightest supersymmetric particle decays promptly and that only one of the R-parity violating couplings is dominant for each of the decay modes considered. Such processes would yield final states consisting of leptons, jets, or both with or without missing energy. No significant single-like excess of events has been observed with respect to the Standard Model expectations. Limits on the production cross- section of scalar fermions in R-parity violating scenarios are obtained. Constraints on the supersymmetric particle masses are also presented in an R-parity violating framework analogous to the Constrained Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model.Comment: 51 pages, 24 figures, Submitted to Eur. Measurement of the Hadronic Photon Structure Function F_2^gamma at LEP2

    Get PDF
The hadronic structure function of the photon F_2^gamma is measured as a function of Bjorken x and of the factorisation scale Q^2 using data taken by the OPAL detector at LEP. Previous OPAL measurements of the x dependence of F_2^gamma are extended to an average Q^2 of 767 GeV^2. The Q^2 evolution of F_2^gamma is studied for average Q^2 between 11.9 and 1051 GeV^2. As predicted by QCD, the data show positive scaling violations in F_2^gamma. Several parameterisations of F_2^gamma are in agreement with the measurements whereas the quark-parton model prediction fails to describe the data.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, to appear in the proceedings of Photon 2001, Ascona, Switzerlan

A measurement of the tau mass and the first CPT test with tau leptons

We measure the mass of the tau lepton to be 1775.1+-1.6(stat)+-1.0(syst.) MeV using tau pairs from Z0 decays. To test CPT invariance we compare the masses of the positively and negatively charged tau leptons. The relative mass difference is found to be smaller than 3.0 10^-3 at the 90% confidence level.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, Submitted to Phys. Letts.
