The Outbursts and Orbit of the Accreting Pulsar GS 1843-02 = 2S 1845-024
We present observations of a series of 10 outbursts of pulsed hard X-ray flux
from the transient 10.6 mHz accreting pulsar GS 1843-02, using the Burst and
Transient Source Experiment on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory. These
outbursts occurred regularly every 242 days, coincident with the ephemeris of
the periodic transient GRO J1849-03 (Zhang et al. 1996), which has recently
been identified with the SAS 3 source 2S 1845-024 (Soffitta et al. 1998). Our
pulsed detection provides the first clear identification of GS 1843-02 with 2S
1845-024. We present a pulse timing analysis which shows that the 2S 1845-024
outbursts occur near the periastron passage of the neutron star's highly
eccentric (e = 0.88+-0.01) 242.18+-0.01 day period binary orbit about a high
mass (M > 7 solar masses) companion. The orbit and transient outburst pattern
strongly suggest the pulsar is in a binary system with a Be star. Our
observations show a long-term spin-up trend, with most of the spin-up occurring
during the outbursts. From the measured spin-up rates and inferred luminosities
we conclude that an accretion disk is present during the outbursts.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journa
Molecular Identification of Synanthedonini Members (Lepidoptera: Sesiidae) Using Cytochrome Oxidase I
Many North American sesiid moths within Synanthodonini have been studied extensively because their feeding activity can cause detrimental economic and esthetic impacts to many commercially important ornamental and native plant species. Recent discoveries of nonnative clearwing moth pest introductions [e.g., Synanthedon myopaeformis (Borkh.)], reinforce the need for reliable and accurate molecular diagnostic tools that can be used by nontaxonomic experts, particularly when juvenile life stages are recovered from infested host-plant tissues. Cytochrome oxidase I (cox I) previously has been used to successfully identify species and resolve species complexes. In this study, the cox I phylogeny inferred from sequences generated from 21 species of sesiid moths classified within Synanthedonini confirms the close evolutionary relationship between sesiid species. As other authors have suggested in previous works, we observed that Synanthedon rileyana H. Edwards appears atypical for the genus, as it paired with Carmenta bassiformis (Walker) one node removed from, but not sister to, a large well-supported Synanthedon-rich clade. Sannina uroceriformis Walker and Podosesia MXöschler were observed nested deeply within the aforementioned well-supported clade (posterior probability [PP] of clade = 100) comprised of all Synanthedon species sampled, except S. rileyana. Placement of these two taxa conflicts with results from previous morphological studies. These placements were immune from repeated attempts to delete perceived nearby long branches within the data set. Despite these few conflicts and overall low statistical support for most interspecific and higher relationships, our data suggest that all species examined possess unique genetic signatures that lend themselves to accurate identification of all life history stages of these clearwing pests
Interference effects in the photorecombination of argonlike Sc3+ ions: Storage-ring experiment and theory
Absolute total electron-ion recombination rate coefficients of argonlike
Sc3+(3s2 3p6) ions have been measured for relative energies between electrons
and ions ranging from 0 to 45 eV. This energy range comprises all dielectronic
recombination resonances attached to 3p -> 3d and 3p -> 4s excitations. A broad
resonance with an experimental width of 0.89 +- 0.07 eV due to the 3p5 3d2 2F
intermediate state is found at 12.31 +- 0.03 eV with a small experimental
evidence for an asymmetric line shape. From R-Matrix and perturbative
calculations we infer that the asymmetric line shape may not only be due to
quantum mechanical interference between direct and resonant recombination
channels as predicted by Gorczyca et al. [Phys. Rev. A 56, 4742 (1997)], but
may partly also be due to the interaction with an adjacent overlapping DR
resonance of the same symmetry. The overall agreement between theory and
experiment is poor. Differences between our experimental and our theoretical
resonance positions are as large as 1.4 eV. This illustrates the difficulty to
accurately describe the structure of an atomic system with an open 3d-shell
with state-of-the-art theoretical methods. Furthermore, we find that a
relativistic theoretical treatment of the system under study is mandatory since
the existence of experimentally observed strong 3p5 3d2 2D and 3p5 3d 4s 2D
resonances can only be explained when calculations beyond LS-coupling are

The Explication Defence of Arguments from Reference
In a number of influential papers, Machery, Mallon, Nichols and Stich have presented a powerful critique of so-called arguments from reference, arguments that assume that a particular theory of reference is correct in order to establish a substantive conclusion. The critique is that, due to cross-cultural variation in semantic intuitions supposedly undermining the standard methodology for theorising about reference, the assumption that a theory of reference is correct is unjustified. I argue that the many extant responses to Machery et al.’s critique do little for the proponent of an argument from reference, as they do not show how to justify the problematic assumption. I then argue that it can in principle be justified by an appeal to Carnapian explication. I show how to apply the explication defence to arguments from reference given by Andreasen (for the biological reality of race) and by Churchland (against the existence of beliefs and desires)
A Randomized Trial of Nighttime Physician Staffing in an Intensive Care Unit
Background
Increasing numbers of intensive care units (ICUs) are adopting the practice of nighttime intensivist staffing despite the lack of experimental evidence of its effectiveness.
Methods
We conducted a 1-year randomized trial in an academic medical ICU of the effects of nighttime staffing with in-hospital intensivists (intervention) as compared with nighttime coverage by daytime intensivists who were available for consultation by telephone (control). We randomly assigned blocks of 7 consecutive nights to the intervention or the control strategy. The primary outcome was patients’ length of stay in the ICU. Secondary outcomes were patients’ length of stay in the hospital, ICU and in-hospital mortality, discharge disposition, and rates of readmission to the ICU. For length-of-stay outcomes, we performed time-to-event analyses, with data censored at the time of a patient’s death or transfer to another ICU.
Results
A total of 1598 patients were included in the analyses. The median Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE) III score (in which scores range from 0 to 299, with higher scores indicating more severe illness) was 67 (interquartile range, 47 to 91), the median length of stay in the ICU was 52.7 hours (interquartile range, 29.0 to 113.4), and mortality in the ICU was 18%. Patients who were admitted on intervention days were exposed to nighttime intensivists on more nights than were patients admitted on control days (median, 100% of nights [interquartile range, 67 to 100] vs. median, 0% [interquartile range, 0 to 33]; P\u3c0.001). Nonetheless, intensivist staffing on the night of admission did not have a significant effect on the length of stay in the ICU (rate ratio for the time to ICU discharge, 0.98; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.88 to 1.09; P=0.72), ICU mortality (relative risk, 1.07; 95% CI, 0.90 to 1.28), or any other end point. Analyses restricted to patients who were admitted at night showed similar results, as did sensitivity analyses that used different definitions of exposure and outcome.
Conclusions
In an academic medical ICU in the United States, nighttime in-hospital intensivist staffing did not improve patient outcomes. (Funded by University of Pennsylvania Health System and others; ClinicalTrials.gov number, NCT01434823.
The Dynamics of Social Assistance Receipt: Measurement and Modelling Issues, with an Application to Britain
Insulin-Like Peptides and the Target of Rapamycin Pathway Coordinately Regulate Blood Digestion and Egg Maturation in the Mosquito Aedes aegypti
Mosquitoes are insects that vector many serious pathogens to humans and other vertebrates. Most mosquitoes must feed on the blood of a vertebrate host to produce eggs. In turn, multiple cycles of blood feeding promote frequent contacts with hosts and make mosquitoes ideal disease vectors. Both hormonal and nutritional factors are involved in regulating egg development in the mosquito, Aedes aegypti. However, the processes that regulate digestion of the blood meal remain unclear.Here we report that insulin peptide 3 (ILP3) directly stimulated late phase trypsin-like gene expression in blood fed females. In vivo knockdown of the mosquito insulin receptor (MIR) by RNA interference (RNAi) delayed but did not fully inhibit trypsin-like gene expression in the midgut, ecdysteroid (ECD) production by ovaries, and vitellogenin (Vg) expression by the fat body. In contrast, in vivo treatment with double-stranded MIR RNA and rapamycin completely blocked egg production. In vitro experiments showed that amino acids did not simulate late phase trypsin-like gene expression in the midgut or ECD production by the ovaries. However, amino acids did enhance ILP3-mediated stimulation of trypsin-like gene expression and ECD production.Overall, our results indicate that ILPs from the brain synchronize blood meal digestion and amino acid availability with ovarian ECD production to maximize Vg expression by the fat body. The activation of digestion by ILPs may also underlie the growth promoting effects of insulin and TOR signaling in other species

The Atacama Cosmology Telescope: Dynamical Masses and Scaling Relations for a Sample of Massive Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect Selected Galaxy Clusters
We present the first dynamical mass estimates and scaling relations for a
sample of Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect (SZE) selected galaxy clusters. The sample
consists of 16 massive clusters detected with the Atacama Cosmology Telescope
(ACT) over a 455 sq. deg. area of the southern sky. Deep multi-object
spectroscopic observations were taken to secure intermediate-resolution
(R~700-800) spectra and redshifts for ~60 member galaxies on average per
cluster. The dynamical masses M_200c of the clusters have been calculated using
simulation-based scaling relations between velocity dispersion and mass. The
sample has a median redshift z=0.50 and a median mass M_200c~12e14 Msun/h70
with a lower limit M_200c~6e14 Msun/h70, consistent with the expectations for
the ACT southern sky survey. These masses are compared to the ACT SZE
properties of the sample, specifically, the match-filtered central SZE
amplitude y, the central Compton parameter y0, and the integrated Compton
signal Y_200c, which we use to derive SZE-Mass scaling relations. All SZE
estimators correlate with dynamical mass with low intrinsic scatter (<~20%), in
agreement with numerical simulations. We explore the effects of various
systematic effects on these scaling relations, including the correlation
between observables and the influence of dynamically disturbed clusters. Using
the 3-dimensional information available, we divide the sample into relaxed and
disturbed clusters and find that ~50% of the clusters are disturbed. There are
hints that disturbed systems might bias the scaling relations but given the
current sample sizes these differences are not significant; further studies
including more clusters are required to assess the impact of these clusters on
