The Effect of Age and Expression of Affect on Jurors’ Perceptions of Child Witnesses

A child witness’s testimony may be an invaluable piece of evidence; therefore, it is essential to study the circumstances under which jurors perceive children as credible witnesses. The current study examined affect while testifying on perceptions of the child’s credibility, the amount of blame attributed to the witness, and case verdict decisions. A case scenario about an aggravated robbery of a girl who was either 6- or 13-years-old and who either cried or remained calm while testifying was read by 186 undergraduate participants. No age effects were found, possibly due to the non-sexual nature of the case. No effects for expression of affect were found, possibly because participants need to view affective reactions for them to be influential

A Proposed Interpretation of Transitional and Turbulent Energy Flow Processes

This paper discusses the consequence of a continuum analysis of turbulence using the Reynolds convention, on the cascade of energy to internal thermal energy. It is observed that there are two distinct dissipative paths or traps that the energy follows, neither of which involves vorticity. It is observed that the so-called Reynolds\u27 Stresses are not involved in these irreversible dissipative paths, but are in the reversible bridge between the mean and fluctuating flows. An effort is made to generate a consistent physical interpretation of all of the terms in the equations used rather than selecting isolated terms for explanation. Some suggestions are made for modeling the dissipative terms and an appendix is included to illustrate how information can be lost in an integration process that results in erroneously ascribing dissipative roles to perfectly reversible terms and equations

Study of advanced fuel system concepts for commercial aircraft and engines

The impact on a commercial transport aircraft of using fuels which have relaxed property limits relative to current commercial jet fuel was assessed. The methodology of the study is outlined, fuel properties are discussed, and the effect of the relaxation of fuel properties analyzed. Advanced fuel system component designs that permit the satisfactory use of fuel with the candidate relaxed properties in the subject aircraft are described. The two fuel properties considered in detail are freezing point and thermal stability. Three candidate fuel system concepts were selected and evaluated in terms of performance, cost, weight, safety, and maintainability. A fuel system that incorporates insulation and electrical heating elements on fuel tank lower surfaces was found to be most cost effective for the long term

The Prenective View of Propositional Content

Beliefs have what I will call ‘propositional content’. A belief is always a belief that so-and-so: a belief that grass is green, or a belief that snow is white, or whatever. Other things have propositional content too, such as sentences, judgments and assertions. The Standard View amongst philosophers is that what it is to have a propositional content is to stand in an appropriate relation to a proposition. Moreover, on this view, propositions are objects, i.e. the kind of thing you can refer to with singular terms. For example, on the Standard View, we should parse the sentence ‘Simon believes that Sharon is funny’ as: [Simon] believes [that Sharon is funny]; ‘Simon’ is a term referring to a thinking subject, ‘that Sharon is funny’ is a term referring to a proposition, and ‘x believes y’ is a dyadic predicate expressing the believing relation. In this paper, I argue against the Standard View. This is how I think we should parse ‘Simon believes that Sharon is funny’: [Simon] believes that [Sharon is funny]; here we have a singular term, ‘Simon’, a sentence ‘Sharon is funny’, and a ‘prenective’ joining them together, ‘x believes that p’. On this Prenective View, we do not get at the propositional content of someone’s belief by referring to a reified proposition with a singular term; we simply use the sentence ‘Sharon is funny’ to express that content for ourselves. I argue for the Prenective View in large part by showing that an initially attractive version of the Standard View is actually vulnerable to the same objection that Wittgenstein used against Russell’s multiple-relation theory of judgment

Cineplastic : temporal paradox in the movement-image medium

Modernity's predilection of spatial constructs over temporal ones continues to cast a lingering epistemological shadow regarding a theory of event in design processes. The impossibility of 'empirical data' as given and fixed in design 'strategies' is further complicated by the contingency of forms developing in time. Design intuition must be more than simply the ability to 'choose' from an auto-generated taxonomy of pre-rationalized forms. 'Framing' as the re-assertion of subjectivity within the 'automatic' processes of photography and film has yet to find a substantive architectural equivalent which allows intuition to intrude, interrupt, contaminate, and guide processes throughout. Captivated in a mode of production characterized by a continuous unfolding of fluid form, architects look for a way out of time. Yet, perhaps the simultaneity of parallel duration cannot (and should not?), be completely reconciled with the discreet and serial computational model.by Travis W. Hanks.S.M
