    Differentiable Physics-based Greenhouse Simulation

    We present a differentiable greenhouse simulation model based on physical processes whose parameters can be obtained by training from real data. The physics-based simulation model is fully interpretable and is able to do state prediction for both climate and crop dynamics in the greenhouse over very a long time horizon. The model works by constructing a system of linear differential equations and solving them to obtain the next state. We propose a procedure to solve the differential equations, handle the problem of missing unobservable states in the data, and train the model efficiently. Our experiment shows the procedure is effective. The model improves significantly after training and can simulate a greenhouse that grows cucumbers accurately.Comment: Accepted at the Machine Learning and the Physical Sciences workshop, NeurIPS 2022. 7 pages, 2 figure

    Epidemiological transition to mortality and refracture following an initial fracture

    This study sought to redefine the concept of fracture risk that includes refracture and mortality, and to transform the risk into "skeletal age". We analysed data obtained from 3521 women and men aged 60 years and older, whose fracture incidence, mortality, and bone mineral density (BMD) have been monitored since 1989. During the 20-year follow-up period, among 632 women and 184 men with a first incident fracture, the risk of sustaining a second fracture was higher in women (36%) than in men (22%), but mortality risk was higher in men (41%) than in women (25%). The increased risk of mortality was not only present with an initial fracture, but was accelerated with refractures. Key predictors of post-fracture mortality were male gender (hazard ratio [HR] 2.4; 95% CI, 1.79–3.21), advancing age (HR 1.67; 1.53–1.83), and lower femoral neck BMD (HR 1.16; 1.01–1.33). A 70-year-old man with a fracture is predicted to have a skeletal age of 75. These results were incorporated into a prediction model to aid patient-doctor discussion about fracture vulnerability and treatment decisions

    Detection of violations of open-pit mining lease boundaries using Sentinel-2 MSI data in the case of Lao Cai and Yen Bai provinces of North Vietnam

    Illegal mining, including the violation of lease boundaries during the extraction of mineral deposits in Vietnam, has witnessed a significant surge in recent years, leading to substantial environmental degradation. Due to the remote locations of mining areas in relation to settlements, the detection of illegal mining activities using conventional methods poses considerable challenges. This study presents a methodology for identifying lease boundary violations in open-pit mining of mineral deposits by utilizing high-resolution satellite images from the Sentinel-2 MSI system. The proposed methodology involves overlaying Sentinel-2 MSI radar-acquired satellite images to identify disparities between approved lease boundaries and actual boundaries of mining areas. The research focuses on the mineral-rich provinces of Lao Cai and Yen Bai in North Vietnam. The findings of this research rhold great potential for effectively monitoring and promptly detecting violations of mining lease boundaries

    Acute lyme infection presenting with amyopathic dermatomyositis and rapidly fatal interstitial pulmonary fibrosis: a case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Dermatomyositis has been described in the setting of lyme infection in only nine previous case reports. Although lyme disease is known to induce typical clinical findings that are observed in various collagen vascular diseases, to our knowledge, we believe that our case is the first presentation of acute lyme disease associated with amyopathic dermatomyositis, which was then followed by severe and fatal interstitial pulmonary fibrosis only two months later.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We present a case of a 64-year-old African-American man with multiple medical problems who was diagnosed with acute lyme infection after presenting with the pathognomonic rash and confirmatory serology. In spite of appropriate antimicrobial therapy for lyme infection, he developed unexpected amyopathic dermatomyositis and then interstitial lung disease.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This case illustrates a potential for lyme disease to produce clinical syndromes that may be indistinguishable from primary connective tissue diseases. An atypical and sequential presentation (dermatomyositis and interstitial lung disease) of a common disease (lyme infection) is discussed. This case illustrates that in patients who are diagnosed with lyme infection who subsequently develop atypical muscular, respiratory or other systemic complaints, the possibility of severe rheumatological and pulmonary complications should be considered.</p

    Polyphasic evaluation and cytotoxic investigation of isolated cyanobacteria with an emphasis on potent activities of a Scytonema strain

The names of the repository/repositories and accession number(s) can be found in the article/supplementary material.Cyanobacteria are phototrophic organisms widely found in most types of natural habitats in the tropical regions of the world. In this study, we isolated and identified cyanobacterial strains from paddy soil in Hanoi (Vietnam) and investigated their cytotoxic activities. Five isolated cyanobacterial strains showed distinctive profiles of gene sequences (rRNA 16S and rbcL), phylogenetic placements, and morphological characteristics. Based on the polyphasic evaluation, they were classified as Scytonema bilaspurense NK13, Hapalosiphon welwitschii MD2411, Aulosira sp. XN1103, Desikacharya sp. NS2000, and Desmonostoc sp. NK1813. The cytotoxic screening revealed that the extract of strain Scytonema bilaspurense NK13 exhibited potent cytotoxic activities against four human cell lines of HeLa cells, OVCAR-8 cells, HaCaT cells, and HEK-293T cells, with IC50 values of 3.8, 34.2, 21.6, and 0.6μg/mL, respectively.     A model immunization programme to control Japanese encephalitis in Viet Nam.

    In Viet Nam, an inactivated, mouse brain-derived vaccine for Japanese encephalitis (JE) has been given exclusively to ≤ 5 years old children in 3 paediatric doses since 1997. However, JE incidence remained high, especially among children aged 5-9 years. We conducted a model JE immunization programme to assess the feasibility and impact of JE vaccine administered to 1-9 year(s) children in 3 standard-dose regimen: paediatric doses for children aged <3 years and adult doses for those aged ≥ 3 years. Of the targeted children, 96.2% were immunized with ≥ 2 doses of the vaccine. Compared to the national immunization programme, JE incidence rate declined sharply in districts with the model programme (11.32 to 0.87 per 100,000 in pre-versus post-vaccination period). The rate of reduction was most significant in the 5-9 years age-group. We recommend a policy change to include 5-9 years old children in the catch-up immunization campaign and administer a 4th dose to those aged 5-9 years, who had received 3 doses of the vaccine during the first 2-3 years of life

    Lograr un mejor reparto de los recursos materiales es una tarea inseparable de una transformación institucional dirigida a un mejor reparto del poder y de la capacidad de decisión. Es preciso reconfigurar las instituciones para redefinir la relación entre estas y la ciudadanía. El espacio de cooperación entre las instituciones públicas y la sociedad civil organizada es un terreno privilegiado para lograr esa reconfiguración institucional. El Fondo de Reequilibrio Territorial se concibe como un primer paso en ese complejo camino y se relaciona con el proceso de descentralización y con el concepto de cooperación público-social. Debe entenderse en relación con otros desarrollos institucionales, como el Consejo Coordinador de los Distritos o los Foros Locales. Una tarea de estas características no puede realizarse desde un solo espacio institucional y en un solo mandato, pero en todo caso debe hacerse contando con la firme voluntad y dirección política del equipo de gobierno que quiera desempeñarla. El gobierno es una herramienta formidable para emprender un proceso de reequilibrio territorial, pero aun cuando no hay en el mismo voluntad política en este sentido existen posibilidades para estimular o condicionar la voluntad del equipo de gobierno: articular un amplio pacto entre los actores políticos, sociales, económicos, académicos, etc. que ponga la cuestión en el centro de la agenda política y eleve hasta lo impagable el coste político de seguir dando la espalda a una cuestión crucial para el futuro de la democracia.Lograr un mejor reparto de los recursos materiales es una tarea inseparable de una transformación institucional dirigida a un mejor reparto del poder y de la capacidad de decisión.
