COMBATING HEGEMONIC DISCOURSE IN AN ONLINE MULTICULTURAL LEADERSHIP COURSE: A NARRATIVE STUDY OF AN INSTRUCTOR AND STUDENT WORKING AT TANDEM FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE
This narrative study examines hegemonic discourse in an online multicultural leadership course by translating e-narrative analysis findings into implications for social justice and recommendations for andragogical strategies. These strategies specifically address hegemonic discourse within an online educational environment. The setting for this article is a graduate level class in Multicultural Leadership geared toward Masters’ students in an educational leadership program. Through the e-narrative analysis, four themes emerged that characterized the hegemonic discourse: rejecting social justice; wooing white privilege; he oppressive “other,” and telling it straight. Based on the findings and implications surrounding the research questions, four andragogical strategies were recommended: engaging in moral conversations; adopting bilateral teaching tools; strategizing for collaborative alliances; and enabling emblematic change

Nonlinear magnetoinductive transmission lines
Power transmission in one-dimensional nonlinear magnetic metamaterials driven
at one end is investigated numerically and analytically in a wide frequency
range. The nonlinear magnetic metamaterials are composed of varactor-loaded
split-ring resonators which are coupled magnetically through their mutual
inductances, forming thus a magnetoiductive transmission line. In the linear
limit, significant power transmission along the array only appears for
frequencies inside the linear magnetoinductive wave band. We present
analytical, closed form solutions for the magnetoinductive waves transmitting
the power in this regime, and their discrete frequency dispersion. When
nonlinearity is important, more frequency bands with significant power
transmission along the array may appear. In the equivalent circuit picture, the
nonlinear magnetoiductive transmission line driven at one end by a relatively
weak electromotive force, can be modeled by coupled
resistive-inductive-capacitive (RLC) circuits with voltage-dependent
capacitance. Extended numerical simulations reveal that power transmission
along the array is also possible in other than the linear frequency bands,
which are located close to the nonlinear resonances of a single nonlinear RLC
circuit. Moreover, the effectiveness of power transmission for driving
frequencies in the nonlinear bands is comparable to that in the linear band.
Power transmission in the nonlinear bands occurs through the linear modes of
the system, and it is closely related to the instability of a mode that is
localized at the driven site.Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures, submitted to International Journal of

“Cycles upon cycles, stories upon stories” : contemporary audio media and podcast horror’s new frights
During the last ten years the ever-fertile horror and Gothic genres have birthed a new type of fright-fiction: podcast horror. Podcast horror is a narrative horror form based in
audio media and the properties of sound. Despite association with oral ghost tales, radio drama, and movie and TV soundscapes, podcast horror remains academically overlooked. Podcasts offer fertile ground for the revitalization and evolution of such extant audio-horror
traditions, yet they offer innovation too. Characterized by their pre-recorded nature, individualized listening times and formats, often “amateur” or non-corporate production, and
isolation from an ongoing media stream more typical of radio or TV, podcasts potentialize the instigation of newer audio-horror methods and traits. Podcast horror shows vary greatly in form and content, from almost campfire-style oral tales, comprising listener-produced and
performed content (Drabblecast; Tales to Terrify; NoSleep); to audio dramas reminiscent of radio’s Golden Era (Tales from Beyond the Pale; 19 Nocturne Boulevard); to dramas delivered in radio-broadcast style (Welcome to Night Vale; Ice Box Theatre); to, most recently, dramas,
which are themselves acknowledging and exploratory of the podcast form (TANIS; The Black Tapes Podcast; Lime Town). Yet within this broad spectrum, sympathies and conventions arise which often not only explore and expand notions of Gothic sound, but which challenge broader existing horror and Gothic genre norms. This article thus demonstrates the extent to which podcast horror uses its audio form, technology and mediation to disrupt and evolve
Gothic/horror fiction, not through a cumulative chronological formulation of podcast horror but through a maintained and alternately synthesized panorama of forms. Herein new aspects of generic narration, audience, narrative and aesthetic emerge. Exploring a broad spectrum of American and British horror podcasts, this article shows horror podcasting to utilize podcasting’s
novel means of horror and Gothic distribution/consumption to create fresh, unique and potent horror forms. This article reveals plot details about some of the podcasts examined
WISE/NEOWISE Observations of Comet 103P/Hartley 2
We report results based on mid-infrared photometry of comet 103P/Hartley 2 taken during 2010 May 4-13 (when the comet was at a heliocentric distance of 2.3 AU, and an observer distance of 2.0 AU) by the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer. Photometry of the coma at 22 μm and data from the University of Hawaii 2.2 m telescope obtained on 2010 May 22 provide constraints on the dust particle size distribution, d log n/d log m, yielding power-law slope values of alpha = –0.97 ± 0.10, steeper than that found for the inbound particle fluence during the Stardust encounter of comet 81P/Wild 2. The extracted nucleus signal at 12 μm is consistent with a body of average spherical radius of 0.6 ± 0.2 km (one standard deviation), assuming a beaming parameter of 1.2. The 4.6 μm band signal in excess of dust and nucleus reflected and thermal contributions may be attributed to carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide emission lines and provides limits and estimates of species production. Derived carbon dioxide coma production rates are 3.5(± 0.9) × 10^(24) molecules per second. Analyses of the trail signal present in the stacked image with an effective exposure time of 158.4 s yields optical-depth values near 9 × 10^(–10) at a delta mean anomaly of 0.2 deg trailing the comet nucleus, in both 12 and 22 μm bands. A minimum chi-squared analysis of the dust trail position yields a beta-parameter value of 1.0 × 10^(–4), consistent with a derived mean trail-grain diameter of 1.1/ρ cm for grains of ρ g cm^(–3) density. This leads to a total detected trail mass of at least 4 × 10^(10) ρ kg
Electromagnetic properties of non-Dirac particles with rest spin 1/2
We resolve a number of questions related to an analytic description of
electromagnetic form factors of non-Dirac particles with the rest spin 1/2. We
find the general structure of a matrix antisymmetric tensor operator. We obtain
two recurrence relations for matrix elements of finite transformations of the
proper Lorentz group and explicit formulas for a certain set of such elements.
Within the theory of fields with double symmetry, we discuss writing the
components of wave vectors of particles in the form of infinite continued
fractions. We show that for (GeV/c), where is
the transferred momentum squared, electromagnetic form factors that decrease as
increases and are close to those experimentally observed in the proton
can be obtained without explicitly introducing an internal particle structure.Comment: 18 pages, 2 figure
A randomised feasibility trial comparing needle fasciotomy with limited fasciectomy treatment for Dupuytren’s contractures
© 2020 The Author(s). Purpose: The purpose of this study is to assess the feasibility of conducting a large, multicentre randomised controlled trial (RCT) comparing needle fasciotomy with limited fasciectomy for treatment of Dupuytren's contractures. Design: The design of this study is a parallel, two-arm, multicentre, randomised feasibility trial with embedded QuinteT Recruitment Intervention. Participants: Patients aged 18 years or over who were referred from primary to secondary care for treatment of a hand with Dupuytren's contractures of one or more fingers of more than 30° at the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) and/or proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joints and well-defined cord(s). Patients were excluded if they had undergone previous Dupuytren's contracture surgery on the same hand. Methods: Potential participants were screened for eligibility. Recruited participants randomised (1:1) to treatment with either needle fasciotomy or limited fasciectomy and followed-up for up to 6 months after treatment. Data on recruitment rates, completion of follow-up, and procedure costs were collected. Four patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) and objective outcome measures were collected before intervention and 6 weeks and 6 months afterwards. Results: One hundred and fifty-three of 267 (57%) primary-care referrals for Dupuytren's contractures met the eligibility criteria for the study. Seventy-one of the 153 (46%) agreed to participate and were randomly allocated to treatment with needle fasciotomy or limited fasciectomy. Sixty-seven of these underwent their allocated treatment, two were crossovers from limited fasciectomy to needle fasciotomy, and two (both allocated limited fasciectomy) received no treatment. Fifty-nine participants (85%) completed 6-month follow-up PROMs. Participants felt the MYMOP, PEM and URAM PROMs allowed them to better describe how their treatment affected their hand function than the DASH PROM. The estimated costs of limited fasciectomy (in an operating theatre) and needle fasciotomy (in a clinic room) were £777 and £111 respectively. Conclusion: A large RCT comparing treatment of Dupuytren's contractures by needle fasciotomy and limited fasciectomy is feasible. Data from this study will help determine the number of sites and duration of recruitment required to complete an adequately powered RCT and will assist the selection of PROMs in future studies on the treatment of Dupuytren's contractures.
