Persuasion in science communication. Empirical findings on scientific weblogs

Science communication has gained high importance in the current knowledge and risk society. Nevertheless, there is still a lack of qualitative studies on how non-experts and experts engage in opinionated scientific debates and which linguistic devices they use to gain influence on other people’s attitudes toward a scientific issue.In our study, we examine dialogical modes of science communication (i.e. weblogs) used by bloggers and audiences to engage into opinionated discourse about scientific endeavors. As those exchanges easily lead to controversies between different points of views, stances and attitudes, we focus from a rhetorically-driven linguistic perspective on devices to persuade the other participants and readers and to control the discourse. Hence, we ask which linguistic instruments are used to gain influence on influence. The aim of our study is to get deeper insights into the persuasive strategies mainly used in those forms of external science communication

Aushandlungsprozesse in vernetzten Systemen – die Löschdiskussionen auf Wikipedia

Soziale Medien bieten durch ihre infrastrukturellen Eigenschaften vielfältige Möglichkeiten der Kooperation und Vernetzung von Internetnutzern. In dezentral organisierten Gemeinschaftsprojekten, wie beispielsweise der Online-Enzyklopädie Wikipedia kommt der verbalen Aushandlung der einzelnen Aspekte der Kooperation eine zentrale Rolle zu. Am Beispiel der sogenannten Löschdiskussionen zeigt der Beitrag Formen der verbalen Aushandlung über die Frage auf, welche Inhalte in der Wikipedia vertreten sein und welche wieder getilgt werden sollen. Dabei wird deutlich, dass neben konstruktiv geführten Diskussionen, die auf der Sachebene angesiedelt sind und so zur Verbesserung der Artikelqualität beitragen können, auch destruktive Debatten vorkommen, bei denen sich der Fokus stärker auf das Beziehungsmanagement der einzelnen Diskussionsteilnehmer verschiebt. Dies kann zur Verhärtung der einander gegenüberstehenden Positionen führen und die erfolgreiche Selbstorganisation innerhalb der Wikipedia negativ beeinträchtigen

Wissenschaftskommunikation in Leichter Sprache? Eine Bestandsaufnahme der Verwendung von Leichte-Sprache-Angeboten in den Webauftritten deutscher Forschungs- institutionen und Hochschulen

Recent research on the impact and reception of science communication pointed out, that marginalized groups in society like people with mental or learning disabilities or people with limited language skills often remain unconsidered by conventional measures of communicating scientific content (Humm/Schrögel/Leßmöllmann 2020). Easy reading concepts might be a helpful approach to a more inclusive mode of science communication. The paper evaluates if German science institutions and universities offer easy reading versions on their websites to enable the above-mentioned groups to access fundamental scientific information. In a second step it analyses how these easy reading versions have been formally implemented and to what extent the requirements of the Federal Ordinance on Accessible Information Technology (BITV 2.0) have been followed. The paper aims to give a first overview on the efforts of scientific institutions to address marginalized groups and to point out deficits of these efforts. &nbsp
