    Wormhole phase in the RST model

    We show that the RST model describing the exactly soluble black hole model can have a dynamical wormhole solution along with an appropriate boundary condition. The necessary exotic matter which is usually negative energy density is remarkably produced by the quantization of the infalling matter fields. Then the asymptotic geometry in the past is two-dimensional anti-de Sitter(AdS2_2), which implies the exotic matter is negative. As time goes on, the wormhole eventually evolves into the black hole and its Hawking radiation appears. The throat of the static RST wormhole is lower-bounded but in the presence of infalling matter it collapses to a black hole.Comment: v1. REVTeX3, 12 pages and 1 figure; v2.     Health Status and Permanent Loss to Follow up of Ellisras Longitudinal Study Subjects: Rural South African Context

    Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are responsible for two out of three deaths worldwide with their profile changing from one country to another. But evidence to sustained these changes are still very limited in rural South African population. The well-characterized Ellisras Longitudinal Study (ELS) provides a unique opportunity of mapping some of these changes in vulnerable adolescent and young adults. The objective is we determined the extent of NCD risk factors derived from anthropometric and blood pressure measurements affected Ellisras Longitudinal Study (ELS) subjects over time for those who died or permanently lost to follow-up. A total of 2238 subjects aged 3–10 years (born between 1994 and 1986) were randomly selected to take part of the Ellisras Longitudinal Study (ELS) in November 1996. The attrition rate of ELS subjects based on death ranges between 0.71 and 3.73% for boys and 0.75 and 4.89% for girls. The prevalence of sever undernutrition ranges from 3.2 to 53%, moderate undernutrition ranges from 9.7 to 28.8%, while mild undernutrition ranges from 17.9 to 59.1% for both males and females. The prevalence of undernutrition was high while hypertension, obesity, and overweight were low in the population. The identification of appropriate NCD indicators for mortality in rural South African population needs more consideration and evaluation

    Mass Determination in SUSY-like Events with Missing Energy

    We describe a kinematic method which is capable of determining the overall mass scale in SUSY-like events at a hadron collider with two missing (dark matter) particles. We focus on the kinematic topology in which a pair of identical particles is produced with each decaying to two leptons and an invisible particle (schematically, ppYY+jetspp\to YY+jets followed by each YY decaying via YXNY\to \ell X\to \ell\ell'N where NN is invisible). This topology arises in many SUSY processes such as squark and gluino production and decay, not to mention t\anti t di-lepton decays. In the example where the final state leptons are all muons, our errors on the masses of the particles YY, XX and NN in the decay chain range from 4 GeV for 2000 events after cuts to 13 GeV for 400 events after cuts. Errors for mass differences are much smaller. Our ability to determine masses comes from considering all the kinematic information in the event, including the missing momentum, in conjunction with the quadratic constraints that arise from the YY, XX and NN mass-shell conditions.     Spin Measurements in Cascade Decays at the LHC

    We systematically study the possibility of determining the spin of new particles after their discovery at the LHC. We concentrate on angular correlations in cascade decays. Motivated by constraints of electroweak precision tests and the potential of providing a Cold Dark Matter candidate, we focus on scenarios of new physics in which some discrete symmetry guarantees the existence of stable neutral particles which escape the detector. More specifically, we compare supersymmetry with another generic scenario in which new physics particles have the same spin as their Standard Model partners. A survey of possibilities of observing spin correlations in a broad range of decay channels is carried out, with interesting ones identified. Rather than confining ourselves to one "collider friendly" benchmark point (such as SPS1a), we describe the parameter region in which any particular decay channel is effective. We conduct a more detailed study of chargino's spin determination in the decay channel q~q+C~±q+W±+LSP\tilde{q}\to q + \tilde{C}^\pm \to q + W^\pm + LSP. A scan over the chargino and neutralino masses is performed.     On Adler-Bell-Jackiw Anomaly in 3-brane Scenario

    We investigate the ABJ anomaly in the framework of an effective field theory for a 3-brane scenario and show that the contribution from induced gravity on the brane depends on both the topological structure of the bulk space-time and the embedding of the brane in the bulk. This fact implies the existence of a non-trivial vacuum structure of bulk quantum gravity. Furthermore, we argue that this axial gravitational anomaly may not necessarily be cancelled by choosing the matter content on the brane since it could be considered as a possible effect from bulk quantum gravity.Comment: 17 pages, RevTex, no figures.     The Little Higgs from a Simple Group

    We present a model of electroweak symmetry breaking in which the Higgs boson is a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson. By embedding the standard model SU(2) x U(1) into an SU(4) x U(1) gauge group, one-loop quadratic divergences to the Higgs mass from gauge and top loops are canceled automatically with the minimal particle content. The potential contains a Higgs quartic coupling which does not introduce one-loop quadratic divergences. Our theory is weakly coupled at the electroweak scale, it has new weakly coupled particles at the TeV scale and a cutoff above 10 TeV, all without fine tuning.     Two-photon final states in peripheral heavy ion collisions

    We discuss processes leading to two photon final states in peripheral heavy ion collisions at RHIC. Due to the large photon luminosity we show that the continuum subprocess γγγγ\gamma \gamma \to \gamma \gamma can be observed with a large number of events. We study this reaction when it is intermediated by a resonance made of quarks or gluons and discuss its interplay with the continuum process, verifying that in several cases the resonant process ovewhelms the continuum one. It is also investigated the possibility of observing a scalar resonance (the σ\sigma meson) in this process. Assuming for the σ\sigma the mass and total decay width values recently reported by the E791 Collaboration we show that RHIC may detect this particle in its two photon decay mode if its partial photonic decay width is of the order of the ones discussed in the literature.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figure

    Practising social justice: Community organisations, what matters and what counts

    This thesis investigates the situated knowing-in-practice of locally-based community organisations, and studies how this practice knowledge is translated and contested in inter-organisational relations in the community services field of practices. Despite participation in government-led consultation processes, community organisations express frustration that the resulting policies and plans inadequately take account of the contributions from their practice knowledge. The funding of locally-based community organisations is gradually diminishing in real terms and in the competitive tendering environment, large nationally-based organisations often attract the new funding sources. The concern of locally-based community organisations is that the apparent lack of understanding of their distinctive practice knowing is threatening their capacity to improve the well-being of local people and their communities. In this study, I work with practitioners, service participants and management committee members to present an account of their knowing-in-practice, its character and conditions of efficacy; and then investigate what happens when this local practice knowledge is translated into results-based accountability (RBA) planning with diverse organisations and institutions. This thesis analyses three points of observation: knowing in a community of practitioners; knowing in a community organisation and knowing in the community services field of practices. In choosing these points of observation, the inquiry explores some of the relations and intra-actions from the single organisation to the institutional at a time when state government bureaucracy has mandated that community organisations implement RBA to articulate outcomes that can be measured by performance indicators. A feminist, performative, relational practice-based approach employs participatory action research to achieve an enabling research experience for the participants. It aims to intervene strategically to enhance recognition of the distinctive contributions of community organisations’ practice knowledge. This thesis reconfigures understandings of the roles, contributions and accountabilities of locally-based community organisations. Observations of situated practices together with the accounts of workers and service participants demonstrate how community organisations facilitate service participants’ struggles over social justice. A new topology for rethinking social justice as processual and practice-based is developed. It demonstrates how these struggles are a dynamic complex of iteratively-enfolded practices of respect and recognition, redistribution and distributive justice, representation and participation, belonging and inclusion. The focus on the practising of social justice in this thesis offers an alternative to the neo-liberal discourse that positions community organisations as sub-contractors accountable to government for delivering measurable outputs, outcomes and efficiencies in specified service provision contracts. The study shows how knowing-in-practice in locally-based community organisations contests the representational conception of knowledge inextricably entangled with accountability and performance measurement apparatus such as RBA. Further, it suggests that practitioner and service participant contributions are marginalised and diminished in RBA through the privileging of knowledge that takes an ‘expert’, quantifiable and calculative form. Thus crucially, harnessing local practice knowing requires re-imagining and enacting knowledge spaces that assemble and take seriously all relevant stakeholder perspectives, diverse knowledges and methods

    Gain-of-function Nav1.8 mutations in painful neuropathy

    Painful peripheral neuropathy often occurs without apparent underlying cause. Gain-of-function variants of sodium channel Nav1.7 have recently been found in ~30% of cases of idiopathic painful small-fiber neuropathy. Here, we describe mutations in Nav1.8, another sodium channel that is specifically expressed in dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons and peripheral nerve axons, in patients with painful neuropathy. Seven Nav1.8 mutations were identified in 9 subjects within a series of 104 patients with painful predominantly small-fiber neuropathy. Three mutations met criteria for potential pathogenicity based on predictive algorithms and were assessed by voltage and current clamp. Functional profiling showed that two of these three Na v1.8 mutations enhance the channel's response to depolarization and produce hyperexcitability in DRG neurons. These observations suggest that mutations of Nav1.8 contribute to painful peripheral neuropathy

    Photoemission and x-ray absorption spectroscopy study of electron-doped colossal magnetoresistance manganite: La0.7Ce0.3MnO3 film

    The electronic structure of La0.7Ce0.3MnO3 (LCeMO) thin film has been investigated using photoemission spectroscopy (PES) and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The Ce 3d core-level PES and XAS spectra of LCeMO are very similar to those of CeO2, indicating that Ce ions are far from being trivalent. A very weak 4f resonance is observed around the Ce 4d \to 4f absorption edge, suggesting that the localized Ce 4f states are almost empty in the ground state. The Mn 2p XAS spectrum reveals the existence of the Mn(2+) multiplet feature, confirming the Mn(2+)-Mn(3+) mixed-valent states of Mn ions in LCeMO. The measured Mn 3d PES/XAS spectra for LCeMO agrees reasonably well with the calculated Mn 3d PDOS using the LSDA+U method. The LSDA+U calculation predicts a half-metallic ground state for LCeMO.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure
