The inverse conjunction fallacy
If people believe that some property is true of all members of a class such as sofas, then they should also believe that the same property is true of all members of a conjunctively defined subset of that class such as uncomfortable handmade sofas. A series of experiments demonstrated a failure to observe this constraint, leading to what is termed the inverse conjunction fallacy. Not only did people often express a belief in the more general statement but not in the more specific, but also when they accepted both beliefs, they were inclined to give greater confidence to the more general. It is argued that this effect underlies a number of other demonstrations of fallacious reasoning, particularly in category-based induction. Alternative accounts of the phenomenon are evaluated, and it is concluded that the effect is best interpreted in terms of intensional reasoning [Tversky, A., & Kahneman, D. (1983). Conjunctions of social categories considered from different points of view
Conjunctions of divergent social categories may elicit emergent attributes to render the composite concept more coherent. Following Kunda, Miller & Clare, (1990) participants listed and rated attributes for people who belong to unexpected conjunctions of social categories. In order to explore the flexibility in such constructions, they were also asked to adopt the point of view of a person in one of the two categories. Experiment 1 found that when adopting the point of view of one constituent category, people tended to combine the concepts antagonistically, meaning that they attributed to members of the conjunction the more negative aspects of the opposing category. Experiment 2 showed that this polarizing effect was reduced when the point of view category was itself unusual. Strong gender stereotype differences were also found in the degree to which combinations were antagonistic. Coatings for directional eutectics
Coating compositions were evaluated for oxidation protection of directionally solidified composite alloy NiTaC-13. These coatings included three NiCrAlY compositions (30-5-1, 25-10-1 and 20-15-1), two FeCrAlY compositions (30-5-1 and 25-10-1), a CoCrAlY composition (25-10-1), and one duplex coating, Ni-35Cr + Al. Duplicate pin samples of each composition were evaluated using two cyclic furnace oxidation tests of 100 hours at 871 C and 500 hours at 1093 C. The two best coatings were Ni-20Cr-15Al-lY and Ni-35Cr + Al. The two preferred coatings were deposited on pins and were evaluated in detail in .05 Mach cyclic burner rig oxidation to 1093 C. The NiCrAlY coating was protective after 830 hours of cycling, while the duplex coating withstood 630 hours. Test bars were coated and cycled for up to 500 hours. Tensile tests indicated no effect of coatings on strength. In 871 C air stress rupture, a degradation was observed for coated relative to bare material. The cycled NiCrAlY coating offered excellent protection with properties superior to the bare cycled NiTaC-13 in 1093 C air stress rupture

Material Morphology and energy barriers to electrical ageing
A distribution of the parameters representing activation energy of the ageing process within the Dissado-Montanari-Mazzanti (DMM) lifetime model has been shown to model experimental lifetime distributions of PET films well. The results imply small differences in the local environments of the moieties involved in the ageing process. Very small changes in the minimum activation energy values have a pronounced effect on the resultant lifetimes of polymer specimens. Changes in the distributions of activation energies with field and temperature can be explained by assuming the ageing process to be one whereby polymer segments on lamella surfaces crystallise to create free volume within the polymer
The Guppy Effect as Interference
People use conjunctions and disjunctions of concepts in ways that violate the
rules of classical logic, such as the law of compositionality. Specifically,
they overextend conjunctions of concepts, a phenomenon referred to as the Guppy
Effect. We build on previous efforts to develop a quantum model that explains
the Guppy Effect in terms of interference. Using a well-studied data set with
16 exemplars that exhibit the Guppy Effect, we developed a 17-dimensional
complex Hilbert space H that models the data and demonstrates the relationship
between overextension and interference. We view the interference effect as, not
a logical fallacy on the conjunction, but a signal that out of the two
constituent concepts, a new concept has emerged.Comment: 10 page

Effects of classification context on categorization in natural categories
The patterns of classification of borderline instances of eight common taxonomic categories were examined under three different instructional conditions to test two predictions: first, that lack of a specified context contributes to vagueness in categorization, and second, that altering the purpose of classification can lead to greater or lesser dependence on similarity in classification. The instructional conditions contrasted purely pragmatic with more technical/quasi-legal contexts as purposes for classification, and these were compared with a no-context control. The measures of category vagueness were between-subjects disagreement and within-subjects consistency, and the measures of similarity based categorization were category breadth and the correlation of instance categorization probability with mean rated typicality, independently measured in a neutral context. Contrary to predictions, none of the measures of vagueness, reliability, category breadth, or correlation with typicality were generally affected by the instructional setting as a function of pragmatic versus technical purposes. Only one subcondition, in which a situational context was implied in addition to a purposive context, produced a significant change in categorization. Further experiments demonstrated that the effect of context was not increased when participants talked their way through the task, and that a technical context did not elicit more all-or-none categorization than did a pragmatic context. Quantum Structure in Cognition: Why and How Concepts are Entangled
One of us has recently elaborated a theory for modelling concepts that uses
the state context property (SCoP) formalism, i.e. a generalization of the
quantum formalism. This formalism incorporates context into the mathematical
structure used to represent a concept, and thereby models how context
influences the typicality of a single exemplar and the applicability of a
single property of a concept, which provides a solution of the 'Pet-Fish
problem' and other difficulties occurring in concept theory. Then, a quantum
model has been worked out which reproduces the membership weights of several
exemplars of concepts and their combinations. We show in this paper that a
further relevant effect appears in a natural way whenever two or more concepts
combine, namely, 'entanglement'. The presence of entanglement is explicitly
revealed by considering a specific example with two concepts, constructing some
Bell's inequalities for this example, testing them in a real experiment with
test subjects, and finally proving that Bell's inequalities are violated in
this case. We show that the intrinsic and unavoidable character of entanglement
can be explained in terms of the weights of the exemplars of the combined
concept with respect to the weights of the exemplars of the component concepts.Comment: 10 page
Feature integration in natural language concepts
Two experiments measured the joint influence of three key sets of semantic features on the frequency with which artifacts (Experiment 1) or plants and creatures (Experiment 2) were categorized in familiar categories. For artifacts, current function outweighed both originally intended function and current appearance. For biological kinds, appearance and behavior, an inner biological function, and appearance and behavior of offspring all had similarly strong effects on categorization. The data were analyzed to determine whether an independent cue model or an interactive model best accounted for how the effects of the three feature sets combined. Feature integration was found to be additive for artifacts but interactive for biological kinds. In keeping with this, membership in contrasting artifact categories tended to be superadditive, indicating overlapping categories, whereas for biological kinds, it was subadditive, indicating conceptual gaps between categories. Chemical kinetic and photochemical data for use in stratospheric modelling
An evaluated set of rate constants and photochemical cross sections were compiled for use in modelling stratospheric processes. The data are primarily relevant to the ozone layer, and its possible perturbation by anthropogenic activities. The evaluation is current to, approximately, January, 1979
