Pauli Spin Blockade of Heavy Holes in a Silicon Double Quantum Dot
In this work, we study hole transport in a planar silicon
metal-oxide-semiconductor based double quantum dot. We demonstrate Pauli spin
blockade in the few hole regime and map the spin relaxation induced leakage
current as a function of inter-dot level spacing and magnetic field. With
varied inter-dot tunnel coupling we can identify different dominant spin
relaxation mechanisms. Applying a strong out-of-plane magnetic field causes an
avoided singlet-triplet level crossing, from which the heavy hole g-factor
0.93, and the strength of spin-orbit interaction 110 eV, can
be obtained. The demonstrated strong spin-orbit interaction of heavy hole
promises fast local spin manipulation using only electrical fields, which is of
great interest for quantum information processing.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figure
Warming winters and New Hampshire’s lost ski areas: An integrated case study
New Hampshire’s mountains and winter climate support a ski industry that contributes substantially to the state economy. Through more than 70 years of history, this industry has adapted and changed with its host society. The climate itself has changed during this period too, in ways that influenced the ski industry’s development. During the 20th century, New Hampshire’s mean winter temperature warmed about 2.1° C (3.8° F). Much of that change occurred since 1970. The mult‐decadal variations in New Hampshire winters follow global temperature trends. Snowfall exhibits a downward trend, strongest in southern New Hampshire, and also correlates with the North Atlantic Oscillation. Many small ski areas opened during the early years while winters were cold and snowy. As winters warmed, areas in southern or lowelevation locations faced a critical disadvantage. Under pressure from both climate and competition, the number of small ski areas leveled off and then fell steeply after 1970. The number of larger, chairliftoperating ski areas began falling too after 1980. Aprolonged warming period increased the importance of geographic advantages, and also of capital investment in snowmaking, grooming and economic diversification. The consolidation trend continues today. Most of the surviving ski areas are located in the northern mountains. Elsewhere around the state, one can find the remains of “lost” ski areas in places that now rarely have snow suitable for downhill skiing. This case study demonstrates a general approach for conducting integrated empirical research on the human dimensions of climate change
Bandwidth in bolometric interferometry
Bolometric Interferometry is a technology currently under development that
will be first dedicated to the detection of B-mode polarization fluctuations in
the Cosmic Microwave Background. A bolometric interferometer will have to take
advantage of the wide spectral detection band of its bolometers in order to be
competitive with imaging experiments. A crucial concern is that interferometers
are presumed to be importantly affected by a spoiling effect known as bandwidth
smearing. In this paper, we investigate how the bandwidth modifies the work
principle of a bolometric interferometer and how it affects its sensitivity to
the CMB angular power spectra. We obtain analytical expressions for the
broadband visibilities measured by broadband heterodyne and bolometric
interferometers. We investigate how the visibilities must be reconstructed in a
broadband bolometric interferometer and show that this critically depends on
hardware properties of the modulation phase shifters. Using an angular power
spectrum estimator accounting for the bandwidth, we finally calculate the
sensitivity of a broadband bolometric interferometer. A numerical simulation
has been performed and confirms the analytical results. We conclude (i) that
broadband bolometric interferometers allow broadband visibilities to be
reconstructed whatever the kind of phase shifters used and (ii) that for
dedicated B-mode bolometric interferometers, the sensitivity loss due to
bandwidth smearing is quite acceptable, even for wideband instruments (a factor
2 loss for a typical 20% bandwidth experiment).Comment: 13 pages, 14 figures, submitted to A&

Nonlinear Torsional Wave Beams
An evolution equation with cubic nonlinearity is presented for a torsional wave beam in an isotropic elastic solid. Analytical solutions are presented for the fundamental and third harmonic in the far field of a uniform circular source. Model For The Dynamics Of A Bubble Undergoing Small Shape Oscillations Between Elastic Layers
A model is presented for a pulsating and translating gas bubble in a channel formed by two soft elastic parallel layers. The bubble is free to undergo small shape deformations. Coupled nonlinear second-order differential equations are obtained for the shape and position of the bubble, and numerical integration of an expression for the liquid velocity at the layer interfaces yields an estimate of their displacement. Simulations reveal behavior consistent with laboratory observations.Applied Research Laboratorie
The public health potential of the current health apps for increasing physical activity
I consider my PhD as having 2 distinctive parts: A) to ascertain the quality of physical activity (PA) applications (apps) on the market in terms of safety, effectiveness, and user experience (Studies 1, 2); B) to assess the efficacy of selected PA apps with potential, physically inactive, users (Studies 3, 4). I am finalising part A of the PhD and I am writing the protocols for part B. It would be valuable to gain the views of experts to make sure I am considering the topic from both behaviour change discipline and user experience research
Linking Ultracold Polar Molecules
We predict that pairs of polar molecules can be weakly bound together in an
ultracold environment, provided that a dc electric field is present. The field
that links the molecules together also strongly influences the basic properties
of the resulting dimer, such as its binding energy and predissociation
lifetime. Because of their long-range character these dimers will be useful in
disentangling cold collision dynamics of polar molecules. As an example, we
estimate the microwave photoassociation yield for OH-OH cold collisions.Comment: 4 pages 2 figure
