    Orbiter catalytic/noncatalytic heat transfer as evidenced by heating to contaminated surfaces on STS-2 and STS-3

    During that portion of Space Shuttle orbiter entry when significant aerodynamic heat transfer occurs, the flow over the vehicle is in chemical nonequilibrium. The parameter which most significantly influences the level of surface heat transfer in such a flow field is the catalytic efficiency of the surface with respect to the recombination of dissociated oxygen atoms. Significant, and instantaneous, changes were observed in the level of heat transfer at several lower surface centerline locations on STS-2 and STS-3. This phenomenon apparently resulted from a sudden change in the surface catalytic efficiency at these locations due to contamination of the surface by metallic oxides. As a result, data obtained from affected measurements cannot be considered as benchmark data with which to attempt to characterize nonequilibrium heat transfer to the orbiter's lower surface centerline

    Warming winters and New Hampshire’s lost ski areas: An integrated case study

    New Hampshire’s mountains and winter climate support a ski industry that contributes substantially to the state economy. Through more than 70 years of history, this industry has adapted and changed with its host society. The climate itself has changed during this period too, in ways that influenced the ski industry’s development. During the 20th century, New Hampshire’s mean winter temperature warmed about 2.1° C (3.8° F). Much of that change occurred since 1970. The mult‐decadal variations in New Hampshire winters follow global temperature trends. Snowfall exhibits a downward trend, strongest in southern New Hampshire, and also correlates with the North Atlantic Oscillation. Many small ski areas opened during the early years while winters were cold and snowy. As winters warmed, areas in southern or lowelevation locations faced a critical disadvantage. Under pressure from both climate and competition, the number of small ski areas leveled off and then fell steeply after 1970. The number of larger, chairliftoperating ski areas began falling too after 1980. Aprolonged warming period increased the importance of geographic advantages, and also of capital investment in snowmaking, grooming and economic diversification. The consolidation trend continues today. Most of the surviving ski areas are located in the northern mountains. Elsewhere around the state, one can find the remains of “lost” ski areas in places that now rarely have snow suitable for downhill skiing. This case study demonstrates a general approach for conducting integrated empirical research on the human dimensions of climate change

    Noncontacting device to indicate deflection of turbopump internal rotating parts

    Phase 2 (development) which was concluded for the ultrasonic Doppler device and the light-pipe-reflectance device is reported. An ultrasonic Doppler breadboard system was assembled which accurately measured runout in the J-2 LOX pump impeller during operation. The transducer was mounted on the outside of the pump volute using a C-clamp. Vibration was measured by conducting the ultrasonic wave through the volute housing and through the fluid in the volute to the impeller surface. The impeller vibration was also measured accurately using the light-pipe probe mounted in an elastomeric-gland fitting in the pump case. A special epoxy resin developed for cryogenic applications was forced into the end of the fiber-optic probe to retain the fibers. Subsequently, the probe suffered no damage after simultaneous exposure to 2150 psi and 77 F. Preliminary flash X-radiographs were taken of the turbine wheel and the shaft-bearing-seal assembly, using a 2-megavolt X-ray unit. Reasonable resolution and contrast was obtained. A fast-neutron detector was fabricated and sensitivity was measured. The results demonstrated that the technique is feasible for integrated-time measurements requiring, perhaps, 240 revolutions to obtain sufficient exposure at 35,000 rpm.     We consider contact structures on simply-connected 5-manifolds which arise as circle bundles over simply-connected symplectic 4-manifolds and show that invariants from contact homology are related to the divisibility of the canonical class of the symplectic structure. As an application we find new examples of inequivalent contact structures in the same equivalence class of almost contact structures with non-zero first Chern class.Comment: 27 pages; to appear in Math.
