Total quality management: Strengths and barriers to implementation and cultural adaptation

    Get PDF
NASA/Langley Research Center (LaRC) is in the process of implementing Total Quality Management (TQM) throughout the organization in order to improve productivity and make the Center an even better place to work. The purpose of this project was to determine strengths and barriers to TQM being implemented and becoming a part of the organizational culture of the Human Resources Management Division (HRMD) at Langley. The target population for this project was both supervisory and nonsupervisory staff of the HMRD. In order to generate data on strengths and barriers to TQM implementation and cultural adaptation, a modified nominal group technique was used

David Versus Goliath: Strategic Behavior of Small Firms In Consolidated Industries

    Get PDF
This study assesses the effect of strategy selection and firm adaptability on small firm performance,  using firm  tenure  as a moderator  variable.  The study  is based  upon interviews with sixteen small firms operating in rapidly changing and consolidating industries. All of the firms in the study pursued a differentiation strategy. Half of the firms  pursued  a  broad product strategy and more than three-quarters pursued a broad service strategy. The study found that small firms adapt by addressing community needs and forming cooperative agreements with other small firms but not larger firms. Variation among the industries studied suggests that the intensity of industry concentration affects firm adaptation decisions. For instance, while the heavily concentrated hardware anti drugstore industries  showed limited adaptation, the unconsolidated bookstore industry showed greater commitment to adaptive strategies. In addition, firm tenure was found to affect the adaptation of the small firms  studied

Neurophysiological Repercussions of Anabolic Steroid Abuse: A Road into Neurodegenerative Disorders

    Get PDF
Since its discovery, several chemical modifications in the testosterone molecule have been done by pharmaceutical industry in order to improve its pharmacological effects, resulting in the creation of anabolic steroids (AS). Despite the therapeutic benefits, AS abuse has spread among elite and recreational athletes in the search for improvements on physical appearance and physical performance. Illicit use of anabolic AS has been correlated with several adverse effects, such as cardiovascular, endocrine, reproductive, and neurobehavioral dysfunctions. Recently, declines on cognitive and mnemonic performance have been demonstrated clinically and experimentally. Experimental studies have demonstrated that these neurological dysfunctions are correlated to spread neuronal apoptosis throughout important areas of the central nervous system (CNS), such as hippocampus and cortex. Several pathophysiological mechanisms have been linked to the AS-induced neurotoxicity, including redox imbalance and recruitment of pro-apoptotic downstream pathways. Furthermore, exposure to AS has arisen as a potential risk factor to the development of Alzheimer’s disease. Altogether, these evidences imply that AS abuse per se induces neurodegeneration and can aggravate the prognosis of neurodegenerative diseases

Attributable costs of surgical site infection and endometritis after low transverse cesarean delivery

BACKGROUND: Accurate data on costs attributable to hospital-acquired infections are needed in order to determine their economic impact and the cost-benefit of potential preventive strategies. OBJECTIVE: Determine the attributable costs of surgical site infection (SSI) and endometritis (EMM) after cesarean section using two different methods. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort. SETTING: Barnes-Jewish Hospital, a 1250-bed academic tertiary care hospital. PATIENTS: 1,605 women who underwent low transverse cesarean section from 7/1999 – 6/2001. METHODS: Attributable costs of SSI and EMM were determined by generalized least squares (GLS) and propensity score matched-pairs using administrative claims data to define underlying comorbidities and procedures. For the matched-pairs analyses, uninfected control patients were matched to patients with SSI or with EMM based on their propensity to develop infection, and the median difference in costs calculated. RESULTS: The attributable total hospital cost of SSI calculated by GLS was 3,529andbypropensityscorematched−pairswas3,529 and by propensity score matched-pairs was 2,852. The attributable total hospital cost of EMM calculated by GLS was 3,956andbypropensityscorematched−pairswas3,956 and by propensity score matched-pairs was 3,842. The majority of excess costs were associated with room and board and pharmacy costs. CONCLUSIONS: The costs of SSI and EMM were lower than SSI costs reported after more extensive operations. The attributable costs of EMM calculated using the two methods were very similar, while the costs of SSI calculated using propensity score matched-pairs were lower than the costs calculated by GLS. The difference in costs determined by the two methods needs to be considered by investigators performing cost analyses of hospital-acquired infections

Erasmus Mundus Master of Bioethics: a case for an effective model for international bioethics education

Designing bioethics curriculum for international postgraduate students is a challenging task. There are at least two main questions, which have to be resolved in advance: (1) what is a purpose of a particular teaching program and (2) how to respectfully arrange a classroom for students coming from different cultural and professional backgrounds. In our paper we analyze the case of the Erasmus Mundus Master of Bioethics program and provide recommendations for international bioethics education. In our opinion teaching bioethics to postgraduate international students goes beyond curriculum. It means that such a program requires not only well-defined goals, including equipping students with necessary skills and knowledge, but also it should first and foremost facilitate positive group dynamics among students and enables them to engage in dialogue to learn from one another
