    Theoretical study of isolated dangling bonds, dangling bond wires and dangling bond clusters on H:Si(100)-(2×\times1) surface

    We theoretically study the electronic band structure of isolated unpaired and paired dangling bonds (DB), DB wires and DB clusters on H:Si(100)-(2×\times1) surface using Extended H\"uckel Theory (EHT) and report their effect on the Si band gap. An isolated unpaired DB introduces a near-midgap state, whereas a paired DB leads to π\pi and π\pi^* states, similar to those introduced by an unpassivated asymmetric dimer (AD) Si(100)-(2×\times1) surface. Such induced states have very small dispersion due to their isolation from the other states, which reside in conduction and valence band. On the other hand, the surface state induced due to an unpaired DB wire in the direction along the dimer row (referred to as [1ˉ10][\bar{1}10]), has large dispersion due to the strong coupling between the adjacent DBs, being 3.84A˚\AA apart. However, in the direction perpendicular to the dimer row (referred to as [110]), due to the reduced coupling between the DBs being 7.68A˚\AA apart, the dispersion in the surface state is similar to that of an isolated unpaired DB. Apart from this, a paired DB wire in [1ˉ10][\bar{1}10] direction introduces π\pi and π\pi^* states similar to those of an AD surface and a paired DB wire in [110] direction exhibits surface states similar to those of an isolated paired DB, as expected. Besides this, we report the electronic structure of different DB clusters, which exhibit states inside the band gap that can be interpreted as superpositions of states due to unpaired and paired DBs.Comment: 7 pages, 10 figure, 1 tabl

    Properties and applications of a predicted population of runaway He-sdO/B stars ejected from single degenerate He-donor SNe

    This study builds on previous works, producing the most extensive prediction of the properties of such a hypothetical population to date, taking into account both Chandrasekhar and non-Chandrasekhar mass events. These results are then used to define criteria for membership of this population and characterise putative subpopulations This study contains 6x10^6 individual ejection trajectories out of the Galactic plane calculated with the stellar kinematics framework SHyRT, which are analysed with regard to their bulk observational properties. These are then put into context with the only previously identified population member US\,708 and applied to a number of other possible candidate objects. We find that two additional previously observed objects possess properties to warrant a designation as candidate objects. Characterisation of these object with respect to the predicted population finds all of them to be extreme in at least one astrometric observable. We find that current observations support a Galactic SN rate on the order of ~3x10^-7/yr to ~2x10^-6/yr, three orders of magnitude below the inferred Galactic SN Ia rate and two orders of magnitude below the formation rate of predicted He-donor progenitors. The number of currently observed population members suggests that the He-donor scenariois not a dominant contributor to the number of observed SNe Ia. However, we find that, even at the low event rate suggested, the majority of possibly detectable population members is still undetected.     On the Connection of Anisotropic Conductivity to Tip Induced Space Charge Layers in Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy of p-doped GaAs

    The electronic properties of shallow acceptors in p-doped GaAs{110} are investigated with scanning tunneling microscopy at low temperature. Shallow acceptors are known to exhibit distinct triangular contrasts in STM images for certain bias voltages. Spatially resolved I(V)-spectroscopy is performed to identify their energetic origin and behavior. A crucial parameter - the STM tip's work function - is determined experimentally. The voltage dependent potential configuration and band bending situation is derived. Ways to validate the calculations with the experiment are discussed. Differential conductivity maps reveal that the triangular contrasts are only observed with a depletion layer present under the STM tip. The tunnel process leading to the anisotropic contrasts calls for electrons to tunnel through vacuum gap and a finite region in the semiconductor.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figure

    In deze 43-ste jaargang van het Tijdschrift voor Gerontologie en Geriatrie opent de redactie de nieuwe rubriek Recent onderzoek. Onderzoekers en programmaleiders van universitaire en niet-universitaire onderzoekscentra op het gebied van de gerontologie en geriatrie in België en Nederland zijn uitgenodigd om samenvattingen in te sturen van onderzoek dat onlangs door hen zelf of in hun vakgroepen of organisaties is afgerond. Met deze rubriek wil de redactie de lezers van het Tijdschrift blijven informeren over onderzoek naar veroudering en de maatschappelijke consequenties daarvan in brede zin: medisch, psychologisch en sociaal.  Het onderzoeksprogramma “Innovaties in de zorg voor ouderen” van de CAPHRI School for Public Health and Primary Care van de Universiteit Maastricht richt zich op drie samenhangende thema’s: (1) onderzoek naar prevalentie en determinanten van relevante zorgproblemen bij ouderen; (2) ontwikkeling en evaluatie van interventies en zorgvernieuwingen die zelfredzaamheid en kwaliteit van leven van ouderen (kunnen) bevorderen en (3) de implementatie van dergelijke interventies en zorgvernieuwingen in de zorgpraktijk.     Tailoring of the Tell-us Card communication tool for nurses to increase patient participation using Intervention Mapping

    Aims and objectives: To describe the tailoring of the Tell-us Card intervention for enhanced patient participation to the Dutch hospital setting using Intervention Mapping as a systematic approach. Background: Even though patient participation is essential in any patient-to-nurse encounter, care plans often fail to take patients' preferences into account. The Tell-us Card intervention seems promising, but needs to be tailored and tested before implementation in a different setting or on large scale. Design: Description of the Intervention Mapping framework to systematically tailor the Tell-us Card intervention to the Dutch hospital setting. Methods: Intervention Mapping consists of: (i) identification of the problem through needs assessment and determination of fit, based on patients and nurses interviews and focus group interviews; (ii) developing a logic model of change and matrices, based on literature and interviews; (iii) selection of theory-based methods and practical applications; (iv) producing programme components and piloting; (v) planning for adoption, implementation and sustainability; and (vi) preparing for programme evaluation. Results: Knowledge, attitude, outcome expectations, self-efficacy and skills were identified as the main determinants influencing the use of the Tell-us Card. Linking identified determinants and performance objectives with behaviour change techniques from the literature resulted in a well-defined and tailored intervention and evaluation plan. Conclusions: The Tell-us Card intervention was adapted to fit the Dutch hospital setting and prepared for evaluation. The Medical Research Council framework was followed, and the Intervention Mapping approach was used to prepare a pilot study to confirm feasibility and relevant outcomes. Relevance to clinical practice: This article shows how Intervention Mapping is applied within the Medical Research Council framework to adapt the Tell-us Card intervention, which could serve as a guide for the tailoring of similar interventions

    htmlabstractIn a proportionate flow shop problem several jobs have to be processed through a fixed sequence of machines and the processing time of each job is equal on all machines. By identifying jobs with agents, whose costs linearly depend on the completion time of their jobs, and assuming an initial processing order on the jobs, we face two problems: the first one is how to obtain an optimal order that minimizes the total processing cost, the second one is how to allocate the cost savings obtained by ordering the jobs optimally. In this paper we focus on the allocation problem. PFS games are defined as cooperative games associated to proportionate flow shop problems. It is seen that PFS games have a nonempty core.     Allowing Visitors Back in the Nursing Home During the COVID-19 Crisis:A Dutch National Study Into First Experiences and Impact on Well-Being

    Objectives: To prevent and control COVID-19 infections, nursing homes across the world have taken very restrictive measures, including a ban for visitors. These restrictive measures have an enormous impact on residents' well-being and pose dilemmas for staff, although primary data are lacking. A Dutch guideline was developed to cautiously open nursing homes for visitors during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study reports the first findings on how the guideline was applied in the local context; the compliance to local protocols; and the impact on well-being of residents, their family caregivers, and staff.Design: A mixed-methods cross-sectional study was conducted.Setting and Participants: In total, 26 nursing homes were permitted to enlarge their possibilities for allowing visitors in their facility. These nursing homes were proportionally representative of the Netherlands as they were selected by their local Area Health Authority for participation. At each nursing home, a contact person was selected for participation in the current study.Methods: A mixed-methods cross-sectional study was conducted, consisting of questionnaire, telephone interviews, analyses of documentation (ie, local visiting protocols), and a WhatsApp group.Results: Variation in local protocols was observed, for example, related to the use of personal protective equipment, location, and supervision of visits. In general, experiences were very positive. All nursing homes recognized the added value of real and personal contact between residents and their loved ones and indicated a positive impact on well-being. Compliance with local guidelines was sufficient to good. No new COVID-19 infections were reported during this time.Conclusions and Implications: These results indicate the value of family visitation in nursing homes and positive impact of visits. Based on these results, the Dutch government has decided to allow all nursing homes in the Netherlands to cautiously open their homes using the guidelines.
