The author discusses the repercussion of reality shows, a new mode of television programming present in 17 Western countries. The programs aired by Globo TV – Big brother Brasil – and by SBT – Casa dos artistas (Artist’s house) – inspired all kinds of analyses. The author emphasizes the use of audience interactivity with programming and endorses the opinions of other critics who see this type of programming as agents of notions about public and private, citizen and individual, in a social movement context (...) In the article, the author also stresses that this format challenges traditional dramaturgy, introducing new elements in the audiovisual paradigm.A autora discute a repercussão do reality show, nova modalidade de programação televisiva, que está presente em 17 países Ocidentais. Os exemplares veiculados pela TV Globo – Big brother Brasil – e pelo SBT – Casa dos artistas – inspiram análises de todos os naipes. A autora salienta o exercício da interatividade do público com a programação e endoça a opinião de outros críticos que vêem este tipo de programação como agentes sobre noções de público e privado, cidadão e indivíduo, num contexto dos movimentos sociais (...) Three books published recently are expressing the contemporary efforts to understand the role of television in the production of knowledge. Edited in the UK, one of the most important centers of research on the subject, these books are overcoming the traditional and ideological conceptions about television.Três livros publicados este ano expressam o esforço contemporâneo por entender o papel da televisão na produção de conhecimento. Editados na Inglaterra, um dos mais importantes centros de pesquisa sobre o assunto, estes livros marcaram a superação de concepções que limitavam papel da televisão ao de reproduzir ideologias.

Expressões fílmicas da violência urbana contemporânea: Cidade de Deus, Notícias de uma guerra particular e Falcão, meninos do tráfico

This paper discusses possible interlocutions between City of God - a feature fiction film directed by Fernando Meirelles in 2002 - and documentaries News from a Private War, directed by João Moreira Salles in 1999 and Falcon, boys of drug traffic, directed by rapper MV Bill and his agent and producer Celso Athayde in 2006. The paper compares different ways in which a fiction and two documentaries express different "appropriations of the mechanisms of producing visual expression" about Brazilian contemporary social inequality, which is perversely associated with violence and parallel powers that are active in favelas and peripheric neighborhoods.Este trabalho discute as interlocuções possíveis entre Cidade de Deus - filme ficcional dirigido por Fernando Meirelles em 2002 - e os documentários Notícias de uma guerra particular, dirigido por João Moreira Salles em 1999 e Falcão, meninos do tráfico, dirigido pelo rapper MV Bill e seu agente e produtor Celso Athayde em 2006. O trabalho compara as diferentes formas pelas quais uma ficção e dois documentários revelam diferentes"apropriações dos mecanismos de produção de expressão visual" sobre as desigualdades sociais contemporâneas no Brasil, que são perversamente associadas à violência e aos poderes paralelos que atuam nas favelas e bairros das periferias

Beto Rockfeller, a Motocicleta e o Engov

Based on the analysis of the seven episodes of Beto Rockfeller, a telenovela produced and aired by São Paulo pioneer TUPI station in 1968-9, and written by theater writer Braulio Pedroso, which are part of the TUPI archive and which have been recently restaured as part of the Fapesp financed project of digitalization of the TUPI archive by Cinemateca Brasileira, this paper explores the potentialities of TV archives to open new venues of understanding of Brazilian recent history, especially of the connections between telenovelas and shifting notions about the urban space, gender and social relations. The paper explores specific connections between diegetic and extra diegetic references to specific urban and social landscapes and the emerging consumerism of the time.Baseado na análise dos sete capítulos da novela Beto Rockfeller (1968-9, Bráulio Pedroso), exibida e produzida pela TV Tupi de São Paulo, restaurados recentemente pela Cinemateca Brasileira com recursos de projeto FAPESP de digitalização de acervos, e em pesquisa em arquivos publicados na imprensa especializada da época, esse artigo discute as maneiras concretas pelas quais o título conhecido por ter introduzido gravações em locação, diálogos coloquiais, figurinos inovadores, em narrativas contemporâneas que se inspiravam na temporalidade e na espacialidade introduzidos pelos cinemas novos da época, estabelece relações com o universo extradiegético de então. O texto busca situar as maneiras pelas quais no folhetim eletrônico essas convenções estéticas captam e expressam transformações em curso na paisagem urbana, social, de relações de gênero na nascente sociedade de consumo da São Paulo do final dos anos 60

Media and aesthetic boundaries in Twenty Years After (1964-1984)

This documentary performs an original combination of elements that were present in theater and film productions by the Students Union’s mobile cultural arm, the Culture Popular Center – CPC, and elements that would appear in director’s Eduardo Coutinho’s later work as a member of Globo Reporter (a rare in Brazil television incursion in documentary, that lasted roughly from 1973 to 1984). The film also brings elements of cinema vérité and direct cinema. To focus on the relations between these fragments shot in different moments in time, and in different places reveals potent intermedial relations, and helps to interpret the lm as an expression of the director’s critique of his own previous ways of lming. This paper traces connections between this re exive work, and his later experiments - a series of films that can be considered as parts of a conceptual investigation about lm as performance and interaction, and affect, in lieu of film as representation
