Walter Benjamin\u27s theoretical linguistic considerations of the Doctrine of Likeness and the project On the Mimetic Capacity\u27\u27 were formulated in close—not only close in time—connection with the recording of Berlin Childhood Around Nineteen Hundred, to which Berlin Chronicle a year earlier, in the Spring of 1932, had served as a prelude. It cannot be doubted that Benjamin\u27s memoirs represent the impetus as well as the explication, extrapolation and fulfillment of the program that his theoretical writings formulate. But the memoirs are, at the same time, its radicalization. And that comes across most clearly when this doctrine of mimesis is condensed in the function of the word cloud. For the word cloud is just that site in which the divergent elements of Benjamin\u27s text step into the ether of their likeness, as Worte steps into Wolke. But it becomes this site at the price of likeness with itself

L’essai se confronte à la nécessité de rendre plus précise et, par là même, de transformer la notion nancyenne d’être-avec-les-autres. C’est seulement s’il implique un être avec les autres qui ne puisse jamais appartenir à aucune communauté que l’être-avec-les-autres se présente comme la relation absolue et absolument indissoluble : la relation de toutes les relations qui est immédiatement une relation dont le corrélat n’est pas donné. Selon la structure infra-négative de cet être-avec-sans, les communautés ne peuvent se soumettre à des systèmes « symboliques », ni être saisies « comme telles » par elles-mêmes ou par les autres, ni se présenter ou se représenter elles-mêmes dans un corpus philosophique. L’être-avec-les-autres est l’être-sans que l’on appelle « philosophie ».The essay deals with the necessity to render more precise and thereby transform Nancy’s notion of being-with-others. Only if it implies a being with others which remains unable to belong to any community, being-with-others presents itself as the absolute and absolutely undissolvable relation: the relation of all relations, which is at once the relation to no given relatum. In accordance with the infra-negative structure of this being–with–its–without, communities are unable to be aligned with “symbolic” systems, unable to be grasped “as such” by themselves or by others, unable to present or represent themselves in a philosophical corpus in which its reasons resound. Being-with-others is the being-without what is called “philosophy”

The right to have rights was never a right to be had. Hannah Arendt's famous formulation of the most elementary right of all, the right to participate in the definition of rights, is not a description of a given right that belongs to one or the other form of law, but an indictment of a deficit in the construction of legality on the basis of the right to withdraw legal protection from members of a community, and therefore to refuse rights. The one and only human right thus turns out to be ungrounded in anything but the idea of its being had: a "property right" that traces back to the legal, philosophical and linguistic definitions of "one's own" since antiquity. Only the gift of the incalculable and of that which cannot possibly be legitimated can ground the autarchic self-relation of having: ungrounded in the rationally organized nature of any given, possessing the right to membership in a political community turns out to be permission to freely transfer this possession to another, without expectation of a return

Low temperature electronic properties of Sr_2RuO_4 I: Microscopic model and normal state properties

Starting from the quasi one-dimensional kinetic energy of the d_{yz} and d_{zx} bands we derive a bosonized description of the correlated electron system in Sr_2RuO_4. At intermediate coupling the magnetic correlations have a quasi one-dimensional component along the diagonals of the basal plane of the tetragonal unit cell that accounts for the observed neutron scattering results. Together with two-dimensional correlations the model consistently accounts for the normal phase specific heat, cyclotron mass enhancement, static susceptibility, and Wilson ratio and implies an anomalous high temperature resistivity.Comment: 12 pages REVTEX, 6 figure

Determination of the Michel Parameters rho, xi, and delta in tau-Lepton Decays with tau --> rho nu Tags

Using the ARGUS detector at the $e^+ e^-$ storage ring DORIS II, we have measured the Michel parameters $\rho$, $\xi$, and $\xi\delta$ for $\tau^{\pm}\to l^{\pm} \nu\bar\nu$ decays in $\tau$-pair events produced at center of mass energies in the region of the $\Upsilon$ resonances. Using $\tau^\mp \to \rho^\mp \nu$ as spin analyzing tags, we find $\rho_{e}=0.68\pm 0.04 \pm 0.08$, $\xi_{e}= 1.12 \pm 0.20 \pm 0.09$, $\xi\delta_{e}= 0.57 \pm 0.14 \pm 0.07$, $\rho_{\mu}= 0.69 \pm 0.06 \pm 0.08$, $\xi_{\mu}= 1.25 \pm 0.27 \pm 0.14$ and $\xi\delta_{\mu}= 0.72 \pm 0.18 \pm 0.10$.
