Observations of red-giant variable stars by Aboriginal Australians
Aboriginal Australians carefully observe the properties and positions of
stars, including both overt and subtle changes in their brightness, for
subsistence and social application. These observations are encoded in oral
tradition. I examine two Aboriginal oral traditions from South Australia that
describe the periodic changing brightness in three pulsating, red-giant
variable stars: Betelgeuse (Alpha Orionis), Aldebaran (Alpha Tauri), and
Antares (Alpha Scorpii). The Australian Aboriginal accounts stand as the only
known descriptions of pulsating variable stars in any Indigenous oral tradition
in the world. Researchers examining these oral traditions over the last
century, including anthropologists and astronomers, missed the description of
these stars as being variable in nature as the ethnographic record contained
several misidentifications of stars and celestial objects. Arguably,
ethnographers working on Indigenous Knowledge Systems should have academic

The first high-amplitude delta Scuti star in an eclipsing binary system
We report the discovery of the first high-amplitude delta Scuti star in an
eclipsing binary, which we have designated UNSW-V-500. The system is an
Algol-type semi-detached eclipsing binary of maximum brightness V = 12.52 mag.
A best-fitting solution to the binary light curve and two radial velocity
curves is derived using the Wilson-Devinney code. We identify a late A spectral
type primary component of mass 1.49+/-0.02 M_sun and a late K spectral type
secondary of mass 0.33+/-0.02 M_sun, with an inclination of 86.5+/-1.0 degrees,
and a period of 5.3504751+/-0.0000006 d. A Fourier analysis of the residuals
from this solution is performed using PERIOD04 to investigate the delta Scuti
pulsations. We detect a single pulsation frequency of f_1 = 13.621+/-0.015 c/d,
and it appears this is the first overtone radial mode frequency. This system
provides the first opportunity to measure the dynamical mass for a star of this
variable type; previously, masses have been derived from stellar evolution and

The continuous stop location problem in public transportation networks
In this paper we consider the location of stops along the edges of an already existing public transportation network. This can be the introduction of bus stops along some given bus routes, or of railway stations along the tracks in a railway network. The positive effect of new stops is given by the better access of the potential customers to their closest station, while the increasement of travel time caused by the additional stopping activities of the trains leads to a negative effect. The goal is to cover all given demand points with a minimal amount of additional traveling time, where covering may be defined with respect to an arbitrary norm (or even a gauge). Unfortunately, this problem is NP-hard, even if only the Euclidean distance is used. In this paper, we give a reduction to a finite candidate set leading to a discrete set covering problem. Moreover, we identify network structures in which the coefficient matrix of the resulting set covering problem is totally unimodular, and use this result to derive efficient solution approaches. Using Modern Technologies to Capture and Share Indigenous Astronomical Knowledge
Indigenous Knowledge is important for Indigenous communities across the globe
and for the advancement of our general scientific knowledge. In particular,
Indigenous astronomical knowledge integrates many aspects of Indigenous
Knowledge, including seasonal calendars, navigation, food economics, law,
ceremony, and social structure. We aim to develop innovative ways of capturing,
managing, and disseminating Indigenous astronomical knowledge for Indigenous
communities and the general public for the future. Capturing, managing, and
disseminating this knowledge in the digital environment poses a number of
challenges, which we aim to address using a collaborative project involving
experts in the higher education, library, and industry sectors. Using
Microsoft's WorldWide Telescope and Rich Interactive Narratives technologies,
we propose to develop software, media design, and archival management solutions
to allow Indigenous communities to share their astronomical knowledge with the

The HERA-B Ring Imaging Cherenkov Counter
The HERA-B RICH uses a radiation path length of 2.8 m in C_4F_10 gas and a
large 24 square meters spherical mirror for imaging Cherenkov rings. The photon
detector consists of 2240 Hamamatsu multi-anode photomultipliers with about
27000 channels. A 2:1 reducing two-lens telescope in front of each PMT
increases the sensitive area at the expense of increased pixel size, resulting
in a contribution to the resolution which roughly matches that of dispersion.
The counter was completed in January of 1999, and its performance has been
steady and reliable over the years it has been in operation. The design
performance of the RICH was fully reached: the average number of detected
photons in the RICH for a beta=1 particle was found to be 33 with a single hit
resolution of 0.7 mrad and 1 mrad in the fine and coarse granularity regions,

Ant colony optimisation for planning safe escape routes
An emergency requiring evacuation is a chaotic event filled with uncertainties both for the people affected and rescuers. The evacuees are often left to themselves for navigation to the escape area. The chaotic situation increases when a predefined escape route is blocked by a hazard, and there is a need to re-think which escape route is safest. This paper addresses automatically finding the safest escape route in emergency situations in large buildings or ships with imperfect knowledge of the hazards. The proposed solution, based on Ant Colony Optimisation, suggests a near optimal escape plan for every affected person — considering both dynamic spread of hazards and congestion avoidance.The solution can be used both on an individual bases, such as from a personal smart phone of one of the evacuees, or from a remote location by emergency personnel trying to assist large groups
Meson Production in p+d Reactions
The production of neutral and charged pions as well as eta mesons is studied
in the Delta and N* resonance region, respectively. Heavy A=3 recoils were
measured with the GEM detector. The differential cross sections covering the

Computing and visually analyzing mutual information in molecular co-evolution
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Selective pressure in molecular evolution leads to uneven distributions of amino acids and nucleotides. In fact one observes correlations among such constituents due to a large number of biophysical mechanisms (folding properties, electrostatics, ...). To quantify these correlations the mutual information -after proper normalization - has proven most effective. The challenge is to navigate the large amount of data, which in a study for a typical protein cannot simply be plotted.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>To visually analyze mutual information we developed a matrix visualization tool that allows different views on the mutual information matrix: filtering, sorting, and weighting are among them. The user can interactively navigate a huge matrix in real-time and search e.g., for patterns and unusual high or low values. A computation of the mutual information matrix for a sequence alignment in FASTA-format is possible. The respective stand-alone program computes in addition proper normalizations for a null model of neutral evolution and maps the mutual information to <it>Z</it>-scores with respect to the null model.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The new tool allows to compute and visually analyze sequence data for possible co-evolutionary signals. The tool has already been successfully employed in evolutionary studies on HIV1 protease and acetylcholinesterase. The functionality of the tool was defined by users using the tool in real-world research. The software can also be used for visual analysis of other matrix-like data, such as information obtained by DNA microarray experiments. The package is platform-independently implemented in <monospace>Java</monospace> and free for academic use under a GPL license.</p
Measurement of p + d -> 3He + eta in S(11) Resonance
We have measured the reaction p + d -> 3He + eta at a proton beam energy of
980 MeV, which is 88.5 MeV above threshold using the new ``germanium wall''
detector system. A missing--mass resolution of the detector system of 2.6% was
achieved. The angular distribution of the meson is forward peaked. We found a
total cross section of (573 +- 83(stat.) +- 69(syst.))nb. The excitation
function for the present reaction is described by a Breit Wigner form with
