    Annual Report on changes in Veterinary Academic Libraries 2017

    This research chronicles the current state of academic veterinary libraries and documents recent changes across the international academic veterinary library community. Specifically, on an annual basis, it gathers evidence from veterinary colleague libraries to document any closing and merging of academic veterinary libraries, to compile all evidence and descriptive information concerning changes in space, collections, reporting relationships and librarian assignments. Beginning in 2016, a survey is sent to each academic veterinary library accredited, approved or conditionally approved by the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, the Australasian Veterinary Boards Council or the European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education. Aggregated survey results will be published and made available through the Texas A&M institutional repository. The intent is to make longitudinal data available for use in benchmarking and trend analysis.This research annually surveys the state of academic veterinary libraries, documenting changes across international academic veterinary libraries.     Development of a Value-Added Database of Evaluated Systematic Reviews in Veterinary Medicine: DVM Evidence

    Objectives: This presentation will describe the development of the Database of Veterinary Medicine Evidence (DVM Evidence). The database was created by collecting, annotating, and evaluating systematic reviews and meta-analyses of relevance to veterinary medicine. Methods: The process includes four steps, similar to conducting a systematic review: identification, selection, appraisal, and data abstraction. Identification includes searching bibliographic databases (MEDLINE, Cab Abstracts, and more), grey literature, and expert selected list of conference proceedings and journal titles. The selection and appraisal process was completed independently by 2 team members, with disagreements settled by consensus. The appraisal process utilized AMSTAR and PRISMA. The data abstraction form includes citation, review question, inclusion criteria, topic, resources searched, and list of included primary studies. The database will be open access and browsable by species, specialty area, and type of study as well as searchable by keywords, author(s), journal titles, and year. Collaboration will be sought with librarians, researchers, and veterinarians to add in various perspectives. Results: A pilot group of 20 studies was selected by the team’s systematic review expert based on criteria designed to facilitate training team members in appraisal, coding, and testing the coding form. The coding form which incorporates AMSTAR, PRISMA, and custom questions, was developed in Qualtrics, a subscription based survey tool. Although initially the survey format of Qualtrics had some promise as a tool for the coding form, several issues were found during the pilot phase. The team decided to build a custom form that provides more flexibility with importing and exporting data to and from the database, and more control in the desired outcome of the resource. The team chose MySQL for the database management system, and PHP as the scripting language, because these software are supported by the library IT department, powerful and flexible enough to accomplish the tasks, and common enough for others to adapt them as the database evolves and personnel change occurs. Graduate students, selected for their expertise with MySQL and PHP, created the database and public interfaces with design input from team members. During each step of the process, the team considered needs of potential external evaluators. Conclusions: Developing a systematic review database of this complexity takes a team with a variety of skills, strategic planning, and frequent checkpoints along the way. The next step will focus on the usability of the custom made form and the search interface with external evaluators

    Compiling the evidence to chronicle the state of the international veterinary library landscape

    Objective: This research, in progress at the time of this abstract, surveys the current state of academic veterinary libraries and documents recent changes across the international academic veterinary library community. Specifically, it will gather evidence from veterinary colleague libraries that are listed in the international veterinary libraries directory, maintained by the Veterinary Medical Libraries Section of the Medical Library Association, to document any closing and merging of academic veterinary libraries, to compile all evidence and descriptive information concerning changes in space, collections, reporting relationships and librarian assignments. Methods: Principal investigators developed an online survey, administered using Qualtrics, to gather data from current and recently retired veterinary librarians. Additionally, Qualtrics provides standard reporting and analysis tools. The survey is scheduled for distribution in January 2015. Responses will be compiled and analyzed during the spring. Results will be shared with participants and other colleagues. The survey will be repeated triennially using the 2015 survey as a benchmark. Results from the separate surveys and trends analyses across multiple survey iterations will be provided as longitudinal data increases

    Modeling the kinetics of enzymic reactions in mainly solid reaction mixtures

    There is currently considerable interest in using mainly solid reaction mixtures for enzymic catalysis. In these reactions starting materials dissolve into, and product materials crystalize out of, a small amount of liquid phase in which the catalytic reaction occurs. An initial mathematical model for mass transfer effects in such systems is constructed using some physically reasonable approximations. The model equations are solved numerically to determine how the reactant concentrations vary with time and position. To evaluate the extent to which mass transfer limits the overall rate of product formation, an effectiveness factor is defined as the ratio of the observed total reaction rate to the total reaction rate in the reaction limited limit. As expected, the value of the effectiveness factor in steady state is strongly dependent on the Thiele modulus. However, it is also observed that the effectiveness factor can vary widely as a result of changes in the other dimensionless groups characterizing the system. For example, there are situations with Thiele modulus equal to unity in which the value of the effectiveness factor varies between approximately 0.1 and 0.8 as the other parameters are varied in physically reasonable ranges. Analytical asymptotic solutions that provide good approximations to the numerically calculated results in various physically important limiting cases are also presented

    This report represents the condensed documentation of the computer-based laboratory automation system RADRAR (Remote Analytical Data Acquisition and Reduction) for the analytical laboratory of a reprocessing facility for high temperature reactor fuel elements. The essential tasks of the system are on-line open-loop process control based on in-line measurements and automation of the offline analytical laboratory. The in-line measurements (at 55 tanks of the chemical process area) provide density-, liquid-, level-, and temperature values. The concentration value of a single component may easily be determined, if the solution consists of no more than two phases. The automation of the off-line analytical laboratory contains laboratory organization including sample management and data organization and computer-aided sample transportation control, data acquisition and data processing at chemical and nuclear analytical devices. The computer system consists of two computer-subsystems: a front end system for sample central registration and in-line process control and a central size system for the off-line analytical tasks. The organization of the application oriented system uses a centralized data base. Similar data processing functions concerning different analytical management tasks are structured into the following subsystem: man machine interface, interrupt- and data acquisition system, data base, protocol service and data processing. The procedures for the laboratory managernent (organization and experiment sequences) are defined by application data bases. Following the project phases, engineering requirements-, design-, assembly-, start up- and test run phase are described.     CD169 (Siglec-1) as a Robust Human Cell Biomarker of Toll-Like Receptor 9 Agonist Immunotherapy

    Immunotherapy is a promising therapeutic area in cancer and chronic viral infections. An important component of immunotherapy in these contexts is the activation of innate immunity. Here we investigate the potential for CD169 (Siglec 1) expression on monocytes to serve as a robust biomarker for activation of innate immunity and, particular, as a proxy for IFN-α production. Specifically, we investigated the effects of Toll-like receptor 9 agonism with MGN1703 (lefitolimod) across experimental conditions ex vivo, in humanized mice, and in clinical trial participants. Ex vivo we observed that the percentage of classical monocytes expressing CD169 increased dramatically from 10% pre-stimulation to 97% 24 hrs after MGN1703 stimulation (p\u3c0.0001). In humanized NOG mice, we observed prominent upregulation of the proportions of monocytes expressing CD169 after two doses of MGN1703 where 73% of classical monocytes were CD169 positive in bone marrow following MGN1703 treatment vs 19% in vehicle treated mice (p=0.0159). Finally, in a clinical trial in HIV-infected individuals receiving immunotherapy treatment with MGN1703, we observed a uniform upregulation of CD169 on monocytes after dosing with 97% of classical monocytes positive for CD169 (p=0.002). Hence, in this comprehensive evaluation ex vivo, in an animal model, and in a clinical trial, we find increases in the percentage of CD169 positive monocytes to be a reliable and robust biomarker of immune activation following TLR9 agonist treatment
