Persuading developers to buy into software process improvement: a local opinion and empirical evidence

Persuading developers to buy into software process improvement: an exploratory analysis
In order to investigate practitioners' opinions of software process and software process improvement, we have collected information from 13 companies, in a variety of ways i.e. the use of Repertory Grid Technique, survey and focus group discussions. Both the Repertory Grid Technique and the focus group discussions (43 discussions occurred, in total) produced a large volume of qualitative data. At the same time, other researchers have reported--investigations of practitioners, and we are interested in how their reports may relate to our own. Thus, other research publications can also be treated as a form of qualitative data. In this paper, we review advice on a method, content analysis, that is used to analyse qualitative data. Content analysis is a method for identifying and classifying words and phrases used in--ordinary language. We use content analysis to describe and analyse discussions on software--process and software process improvement. We report preliminary findings from an analysis--of both the focus group evidence and some publications. Our main finding is that there is an--apparent contradiction between developers saying that they want evidence for software process improvement, and what developers will accept as evidence. This presents a serious problem for research: even if researchers could demonstrate a strong, reliable relationship between software process improvement and improved organisational performance, there would still be the problem of convincing practitioners that the evidence applies to their particular situation
The co-pyrolysis of flame retarded high impact polystyrene and polyolefins
The co-pyrolysis of brominated high impact polystyrene (Br-HIPS) with polyolefins using a fixed bed reactor has been investigated, in particular, the effect that different types brominated aryl compounds and antimony trioxide have on the pyrolysis products. The pyrolysis products were analysed using FT-IR, GC-FID, GC-MS, and GC-ECD. Liquid chromatography was used to separate the oils/waxes so that a more detailed analysis of the aliphatic, aromatic, and polar fractions could be carried out. It was found that interaction occurs between Br-HIPS and polyolefins during co-pyrolysis and that the presence of antimony trioxide influences the pyrolysis mass balance. Analysis of the Br-HIPS + polyolefin co-pyrolysis products showed that the presence of polyolefins led to an increase in the concentration of alkyl and vinyl mono-substituted benzene rings in the pyrolysis oil/wax resulting from Br-HIPS pyrolysis. The presence of Br-HIPS also had an impact on the oil/wax products of polyolefin pyrolysis, particularly on the polyethylene oil/wax composition which converted from being a mixture of 1-alkenes and n-alkanes to mostly n-alkanes. Antimony trioxide had very little impact on the polyolefin wax/oil composition but it did suppress the formation of styrene and alpha-methyl styrene and increase the formation of ethylbenzene and cumene during the pyrolysis of the Br-HIPS
Mountain-Shaped Coupler for Ultra Wideband Applications
This paper demonstrates a novel mountain-shaped design for a compact 3-dB coupler operating at ultra-wideband (UWB) frequencies from 3.1GHz to 10.6 GHz. The proposed design was accomplished using multilayer technology in which the structure is formed by three layers of conductors interleaved by a layer of substrate between each conductor layer. Simulation was carried out using CST Microwave Studio; the result was then compared with results from rectangular and star-shaped couplers that implemented the same technique. The results obtained show that the proposed new coupler has better performance compared to both rectangular and star-shaped coupler designs in terms of return loss, isolation, and phase difference. The coupler was fabricated and measured; the measurement results satisfactorily agree with the simulation results
The principle of equivalence and projective structure in space-times
This paper discusses the extent to which one can determine the space-time
metric from a knowledge of a certain subset of the (unparametrised) geodesics
of its Levi-Civita connection, that is, from the experimental evidence of the
equivalence principle. It is shown that, if the space-time concerned is known
to be vacuum, then the Levi-Civita connection is uniquely determined and its
associated metric is uniquely determined up to a choice of units of
measurement, by the specification of these geodesics. It is further
demonstrated that if two space-times share the same unparametrised geodesics
and only one is assumed vacuum then their Levi-Civita connections are again
equal (and so the other metric is also a vacuum metric) and the first result

How to improve open rotor aerodynamics at cruise and take-off
AbstractA key challenge in open rotor design is getting the optimum aerodynamics at both the cruise and take-off conditions. This is particularly difficult because the operation and the requirements of an open rotor are very different at cruise compared to takeoff. This paper uses CFD results to explore the impact of various design changes on the cruise and take-off flow-fields. The paper then considers how a given open rotor design is best operated at take-off to minimise noise whilst maintaining high thrust. The main findings are that various design modifications can be applied to control the flow features that lead to lost efficiency at cruise and increased noise emission at take-off. A breakdown of the lost power terms from CFD solutions demonstrates how developments in open rotor design have led to reduced aerodynamic losses. At take-off, the operating point of the open rotor should be set such that the non-dimensional lift is as high as possible, without causing significant flow separation. This can be achieved through suitable amounts of re-pitch and speed up applied to a design. Comparisons with fully three-dimensional CFD show that the amount of re-pitch required can be determined using simplified methods such as two-dimensional CFD and a Blade Element Method.This is the accepted manuscript. Semiclassical energy formulas for power-law and log potentials in quantum mechanics
We study a single particle which obeys non-relativistic quantum mechanics in
R^N and has Hamiltonian H = -Delta + V(r), where V(r) = sgn(q)r^q. If N \geq 2,
then q > -2, and if N = 1, then q > -1. The discrete eigenvalues E_{n\ell} may
be represented exactly by the semiclassical expression E_{n\ell}(q) =
min_{r>0}\{P_{n\ell}(q)^2/r^2+ V(r)}. The case q = 0 corresponds to V(r) =
ln(r). By writing one power as a smooth transformation of another, and using
envelope theory, it has earlier been proved that the P_{n\ell}(q) functions are
monotone increasing. Recent refinements to the comparison theorem of QM in
which comparison potentials can cross over, allow us to prove for n = 1 that
Q(q)=Z(q)P(q) is monotone increasing, even though the factor Z(q)=(1+q/N)^{1/q}
is monotone decreasing. Thus P(q) cannot increase too slowly. This result
yields some sharper estimates for power-potential eigenvlaues at the bottom of

Anomalous Hall effect in a two-dimensional electron gas
The anomalous Hall effect in a magnetic two-dimensional electron gas with
Rashba spin-orbit coupling is studied within the Kubo-Streda formalism in the
presence of pointlike potential impurities. We find that all contributions to
the anomalous Hall conductivity vanish to leading order in disorder strength
when both chiral subbands are occupied. In the situation that only the majority
subband is occupied, all terms are finite in the weak scattering limit and the
total anomalous Hall conductivity is dominated by skew scattering. We compare
our results to previous treatments and resolve some of the discrepancies
