Perceptual processing of partially and fully assimilated words in French
International audienceModels of speech perception attribute a different role to contextual information in the processing of assimilated speech. The present study examined perceptual processing of regressive voice assimilation in French. This phonological variation is asymmetric in that assimilation is partial for voiced stops and near-complete for voiceless stops. Two auditory- visual cross-modal form priming experiments were used to examine perceptual compensation for assimilation in French words with voiceless versus voiced stop offsets. The results show that, for the former segments, assimilating context enhances underlying form recovery, whereas it does not for the latter. These results suggest that two sources of information -- contextual information, and bottom-up information from the assimilated forms themselves -- are complementary and both come into play during the processing of fully or partially assimilated word forms

On the role of regular phonological variation in lexical access: Evidence from voice assimilation in French
International audienceThe present study investigated whether lexical access is affected by a regular phonological variation in connected speech: voice assimilation in French. Two associative priming experiments were conducted to determine whether strongly assimilated, potentially ambiguous word forms activate the conceptual representation of the underlying word. Would the ambiguous word form [sud] (either assimilated soute 'hold' or soude 'soda') facilitate "bagage" 'luggage', which is semantically related to soute but not to soude? In Experiment 1, words in either canonical or strongly assimilated form were presented as primes. Both forms primed their related target to the same extent. Potential lexical ambiguity did not modulate priming effects. In Experiment 2, the primes such as assimilated soute pronounced [sud] used in Experiment 1 were replaced with primes such as soude canonically pronounced [sud]. No semantic priming effect was obtained with these primes. Therefore, the effect observed for assimilated forms in Experiment 1 cannot be due to overall phonological proximity between canonical and assimilated forms. We propose that listeners must recover the intended words behind the assimilated forms through the exploitation of the remaining traces of the underlying form, however subtle these traces may be
Do 11-month-old French infants process articles?
pre-print: à paraître dansLanguage and SpeechThe first part of this study examined (Parisian) French-learning 11-month-old infants' recognition of the six definite and indefinite French articles: le, la, les, un, une, des. The six articles were compared with pseudo articles in the context of disyllabic or monosyllabic nouns, using the Head-turn Preference Procedure. The pseudo articles were similar to real articles in terms of phonetic composition and phonotactic probability, and real and pseudo noun phrases were alike in terms of overall prosodic contour. In three experiments, 11-month-old infants showed preference for real over pseudo articles, suggesting they have the articles' word-forms stored in long-term memory. The second part of the study evaluates several hypotheses about the role of articles in 11-month-olds infants' word recognition. Evidence from three experiments support the view that articles help infants to recognize the following words. We propose that 11-month-olds have the capacity to parse noun phrases into their constituents, which is consistent with the more general view that function words define a syntactic skeleton that serves as a basis for parsing spoken utterances. This proposition is compared to a competing account, which argues that 11-month-olds recognize noun-phrases as whole-words

Long-term comparison of losartan and enalapril on kidney function in hypertensive type 2 diabetics with early nephropathy.BackgroundThe objectives of this study were to compare the effects of the angiotensin II receptor blocker, losartan, to those of the angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor, enalapril, on albuminuria and renal function in relationship to clinic and ambulatory blood pressure (ABP) in hypertensive type 2 diabetic subjects with early nephropathy. The tolerability of these agents and their effect on the metabolic profile were also evaluated.MethodsThe study was a one-year prospective, double-blind trial with losartan and enalapril administered alone or in combination with hydrochlorothiazide and other antihypertensive agents. ABP and renal and biochemical parameters were measured at baseline and after 12, 28, and 52 weeks of active treatment. Ninety-two hypertensive type 2 diabetics with early nephropathy completed the study.ResultsBoth losartan and enalapril administered alone or in combination with other agents induced significant reductions in sitting clinic (P < 0.05) and ABP (P < 0.002) without a statistical difference between groups. Geometric means for urinary albumin excretion (UAE) decreased significantly (P < 0.001) in patients treated with losartan from 64.1 to 41.5 ÎĽg/min and in those treated with enalapril from 73.9 to 33.5 ÎĽg/min after 52 weeks of therapy. A significant relationship (P < 0.05) between changes in systolic and diastolic ABP and the decrease in UAE at 52 weeks was seen in both groups. The decline in glomerular filtration rate (GFR) was stabilized at the end of therapy and was identical in both treatment groups. Treatment with enalapril was associated with a significantly higher incidence of cough (P = 0.006) and a rise in serum uric acid (P = 0.002) compared with losartan.ConclusionsOur results indicate that a one-year course of antihypertensive therapy with either losartan or enalapril significantly reduces UAE in hypertensive type 2 diabetic patients with early nephropathy. The reduction in UAE with each treatment is similarly related to decrements in ABP. In addition, the rate of decline in GFR is similar in both treatment groups
Structural Learning of Attack Vectors for Generating Mutated XSS Attacks
Web applications suffer from cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks that
resulting from incomplete or incorrect input sanitization. Learning the
structure of attack vectors could enrich the variety of manifestations in
generated XSS attacks. In this study, we focus on generating more threatening
XSS attacks for the state-of-the-art detection approaches that can find
potential XSS vulnerabilities in Web applications, and propose a mechanism for
structural learning of attack vectors with the aim of generating mutated XSS
attacks in a fully automatic way. Mutated XSS attack generation depends on the
analysis of attack vectors and the structural learning mechanism. For the
kernel of the learning mechanism, we use a Hidden Markov model (HMM) as the
structure of the attack vector model to capture the implicit manner of the
attack vector, and this manner is benefited from the syntax meanings that are
labeled by the proposed tokenizing mechanism. Bayes theorem is used to
determine the number of hidden states in the model for generalizing the
structure model. The paper has the contributions as following: (1)
automatically learn the structure of attack vectors from practical data
analysis to modeling a structure model of attack vectors, (2) mimic the manners
and the elements of attack vectors to extend the ability of testing tool for
identifying XSS vulnerabilities, (3) be helpful to verify the flaws of
blacklist sanitization procedures of Web applications. We evaluated the
proposed mechanism by Burp Intruder with a dataset collected from public XSS
archives. The results show that mutated XSS attack generation can identify

Perception of categories: from coding efficiency to reaction times
Reaction-times in perceptual tasks are the subject of many experimental and
theoretical studies. With the neural decision making process as main focus,
most of these works concern discrete (typically binary) choice tasks, implying
the identification of the stimulus as an exemplar of a category. Here we
address issues specific to the perception of categories (e.g. vowels, familiar
faces, ...), making a clear distinction between identifying a category (an
element of a discrete set) and estimating a continuous parameter (such as a
direction). We exhibit a link between optimal Bayesian decoding and coding
efficiency, the latter being measured by the mutual information between the
discrete category set and the neural activity. We characterize the properties
of the best estimator of the likelihood of the category, when this estimator
takes its inputs from a large population of stimulus-specific coding cells.
Adopting the diffusion-to-bound approach to model the decisional process, this
allows to relate analytically the bias and variance of the diffusion process
underlying decision making to macroscopic quantities that are behaviorally
measurable. A major consequence is the existence of a quantitative link between
reaction times and discrimination accuracy. The resulting analytical expression
of mean reaction times during an identification task accounts for empirical
facts, both qualitatively (e.g. more time is needed to identify a category from
a stimulus at the boundary compared to a stimulus lying within a category), and
quantitatively (working on published experimental data on phoneme
identification tasks)
