    Simulations in Inquiry-Based Learning

One of the largest school districts in the southeastern United States is implementing a district-wide rollout of simulation software to supplement traditional direct instruction in the middle school science curriculum. Practically every area of human existence in the industrialized nations has been impacted significantly by technology in the last twenty years ( (Robinson, 2011). The United States Department of Education (USDOE) has challenged the nations school districts to transition to interactive digital textbooks to all students by 2015 (FCC, 2012). In general, students are far more comfortable using computers, smart phones, and texting devices than their parents or teachers (Doyle, 2006). Students are becoming more computer literate, but not necessarily knowledgeable about the content being offered in our schools (Adams, Reid, S., LeMaster, McKagan, Perkins, Dubson, & Wieman, 2008). It is important that educators assess the effectiveness of computer simulations in aiding teachers to raise student achievement (Adams et al., 2008)

Method for Fabricating Piezoelectric Polymer Acoustic Sensors

    Get PDF
A method for forming a sensor includes providing a first and a second film and bonding an internal connection tab there between. The internal connection tab is positioned between the inner surfaces of the first and second film. Then, a conductive adhesive is applied to either the tab or to the inner film surfaces such that the inner surfaces of the film and the tab are electrically connected. Finally, the films are pressed together to bond the film together with the internal connection tab in between

Vacuum holding fixture and method for fabricating piezoelectric polymer acoustic sensors

An apparatus and method for bonding a first film to a second film to form a sensor. The first and second films are piezoelectric films. A base section has a mating surface for holding the first film. A top section has a mating surface for holding the second film, the top section and base section being mateable together to form a cavity between the top section mating surface and the base section mating surface with the first film and the second film pressed together inside the cavity to bond the first film to the second film. An internal connection port forming mechanism forms an internal connection port between the first film and the second film when the base section and top section are mated together with the first film and the second film pressed together inside the cavity. Alternately, an internal connection tab forming mechanism can be used to form a sensor having an internal connection tab between the first and second film, instead of having an internal connection port

Exclusive Neutral Pion Electroproduction in the Deeply Virtual Regime

We present measurements of the ep→epπ0 cross section extracted at two values of four-momentum transfer Q2=1.9 GeV2 and Q2=2.3 GeV2 at Jefferson Lab Hall A. The kinematic range allows one to study the evolution of the extracted cross section as a function of Q2 and W. Results are confronted with Regge-inspired calculations and GPD predictions. An intepretation of our data within the framework of semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering is also discussed

Assessment of Engineering Mechanics Instructional Multimedia in a Variety of Instructional Settings

Students from Ten Schools, Representing Seven Countries, Used Interactive Multimedia as a Part of their Engineering Statics Classes. the Software Consisted of Four Modules, Which Focused On: Mohr\u27s Circle; Centroid and Moment of Inertia; Stress Transformation; and Structural Analysis. the Students Completed On-Line Surveys About their Experience with the Software. Analysis of the Results Indicated that Students Rated their Knowledge of the Subject Matter Covered in the Software as Increasing Significantly as a Consequence of using the Software. However, This Increase Was Substantially More Pronounced for Students in U.S. Schools. Students Rated the Software as Significantly More Effective Than their Class Textbooks, And, Again, This Effect Was Substantially Stronger for Students in the U.S. the Analyses Also Indicated that the Software Differed Little in its Impact on Males Versus Females. Ratings on a Number of Additional Outcomes Were Consistently Positive with Respect to Student Opinions of the Software
