    Serious Game Evaluation as a Meta-game

    Purpose – This paper aims to briefly outline the seamless evaluation approach and its application during an evaluation of ORIENT, a serious game aimed at young adults. Design/methodology/approach – In this paper, the authors detail a unobtrusive, embedded evaluation approach that occurs within the game context, adding value and entertainment to the player experience whilst accumulating useful data for the development team. Findings – The key result from this study was that during the “seamless evaluation” approach, users were unaware that they had been participating in an evaluation, with instruments enhancing rather than detracting from the in-role game experience. Practical implications – This approach, seamless evaluation, was devised in response to player expectations, perspectives and requirements, recognising that in the evaluation of games the whole process of interaction including its evaluation must be enjoyable and fun for the user. Originality/value – Through using seamless evaluation, the authors created an evaluation completely embedded within the “magic circle” of an in-game experience that added value to the user experience whilst also yielding relevant results for the development team

    Scalar Mediated FCNC at the First Muon Collider

    In the most general two-Higgs doublet model (generally referred to as Model III), tree level flavor changing neutral couplings exist. It has been noted that the most natural value for such a coupling is of the order of the geometric mean of the Yukawa couplings of the two fermions. Bounds on those couplings that involve the second and third generations, from τ,B,D\tau,B,D and ÎŒ\mu physics, are very weak and are not sensitive to this "natural" value. In this paper, it is pointed out that the process \mu\mu ---> \mu\tau, at a muon collider tuned to the scalar resonance, will easily reach this sensitivity if the scalar mass is below 140 GeV. Hundreds of events are expected for an integrated luminosity of an inverse femtobarn, and there appears to be no background. Failure to observe this process, if the scalar is below 140 GeV, would effectively rule out Model III.Comment: Paragraph added and other wording changed in introduction, some wording changes in text.     The prevalence of femoroacetabular impingement anatomy in Division 1 aquatic athletes who tread water

    Abstract Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) is a disorder that causes hip pain and disability in young patients, particularly athletes. Increased stress on the hip during development has been associated with increased risk of cam morphology. The specific forces involved are unclear, but may be due to continued rotational motion, like the eggbeater kick. The goal of this prospective cohort study was to use magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to identify the prevalence of FAI anatomy in athletes who tread water and compare it to the literature on other sports. With university IRB approval, 20 Division 1 water polo players and synchronized swimmers (15 female, 5 male), ages 18–23 years (mean age 20.7 ± 1.4), completed the 33-item International Hip Outcome Tool and underwent non-contrast MRI scans of both hips using a 3 Tesla scanner. Recruitment was based on sport, with both symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals included. Cam and pincer morphology were identified. The Wilcoxon Signed-Rank/Rank Sum tests were used to assess outcomes. Seventy per cent (14/20) of subjects reported pain in their hips yet only 15% (3/20) sought clinical evaluation. Cam morphology was present in 67.5% (27/40) of hips, while 22.5% (9/40) demonstrated pincer morphology. The prevalence of cam morphology in water polo players and synchronized swimmers is greater than that reported for the general population and at a similar level as some other sports. From a clinical perspective, acknowledgment of the high prevalence of cam morphology in water polo players and synchronized swimmers should be considered when these athletes present with hip pain

    Braced Sheet Pile Shoring Wall in Sensitive Clay

    This case history describes the design and performance of a temporary braced sheet pile shoring wall constructed within the median between heavily-trafficked lanes of the Trans Canada Highway in Langley near Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The excavation extended to 9.7 m depth below the existing road grade into soft, high plasticity, sensitive glaciomarine clay. Glaciomarine clay is locally notorious for excavation and embankment stability and foundation settlement problems. The shored excavation was required to provide an access pit to allow the installation of a 3 m diameter steel pipe culvert by Horizontal Pile Driving (HPD). The braced sheet pile wall was designed using the Terzaghi Apparent Earth Pressure distribution and conventional limit equilibrium analysis methods. The excavation was undertaken in stages as the bracing was installed and ground deformation was monitored using slope inclinometers and by survey of surface targets. The case history describes the performance of the excavation and compares predicted to monitored displacements. A particular issue related to face stability due to clay squeezing and running sand during bulkhead sheet pile removal required to commence HPD for culvert installation. The bulkhead face was stabilized by grouting with a water reactive polyurethane grout prior to sheet pile removal

    Tinnitus and Qigong

    Subjective tinnitus is the perception of sound despite the absence of an external stimulus. This challenging sensory event affects millions of people per year. There currently is no cure for tinnitus, but there have been many different options researched to help patients manage its effects, albeit with varying efficacy. In a viral internet video, the Beating the Heavenly Drum maneuver, found in the Eastern practice of Qigong, was said to eliminate the perception of tinnitus for the participants. In this current study, the Beating the Heavenly Drum maneuver was compared to a sham maneuver and evaluated for effectiveness in relieving tinnitus. To be included in this study, participants had experienced tinnitus for at least 6 months and were not currently receiving other tinnitus care. Exclusionary criteria included a diagnosis of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Traumatic Brain Injury, any neurological condition, whiplash, neck injury, or severe anxiety or depression, as determined by the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. Participants completed a tinnitus case history form, Tinnitus Functional Index (TFI), Tinnitus Handicap Index (THI), and Visual Analog Scale (VAS) ranking the annoyance of their tinnitus. Participants were assigned to groups in an alternating fashion, with odd identifiers in Group 1 and even identifiers in Group 2. In Group 2, participants received the experimental maneuver (Beating the Heavenly Drum) during the first session and the sham maneuver (circles rubbed at the base of the skull) during the second. In Group 1, participants received a sham maneuver during the first session and the experimental maneuver during the second session. Within 48 hours after each session, participants completed the TFI, THI, and rated the annoyance of their tinnitus on a scale of 0 to 10 (keeping the same parameters from the VAS) via phone call. Of the twelve participants, two reported that the experimental maneuver, Qigong, was effective for tinnitus relief; while five reported the sham condition relieved their tinnitus. The remaining five participants stated that neither maneuver altered their tinnitus sensation. Across all participants, there were no significant difference scores on the THI, and only one significant difference score on the TFI. While participants reported some change in their tinnitus with either maneuver, none of the questionnaire measures corroborated their subjective report. Additionally, the sham maneuver was perceived as more effective than the experimental maneuver. The Qigong maneuver was not effective for tinnitus relief in this study. It should be noted that a limitation to this study is the small sample size. While this Qigong maneuver did not relieve tinnitus, there are other Internet tinnitus “cures” that should be investigated for their effectiveness in tinnitus relief. With the rise of the Internet and more patients searching for “quick fixes” to tinnitus, it is vital that clinicians provide appropriate education and research to best help patients manage their tinnitus

    A new investigation is done of the possibility of binding the "dodecatoplet", a system of six top quarks and six top antiquarks, using the Yukawa potential mediated by Higgs exchange. A simple variational method gives a upper bound close to that recently estimated in a mean-field calculation.
