The Relationship Development and Learning Organization Dimensions.
This research examined the relationship among learning organization dimensions, leadership development, employee development, and their interactions with two demographic variables (gender and ethnicity) in the context of libraries. The researchers conducted a multivariate analysis of the variance to assess the differences by leadership training groups (low training hours vs. high training hours), or by gender; and by workplace training groups (low vs. high), or by ethnicity (white vs. all others) on a linear combination of the seven dimensions of the learning organization. A conclusive summary is provided along with contributive discussion. Implications and contributions to librarians are discussed in addition to future research recommendations. Also included are conclusive final thoughts accompanied by the limitations of this research
An Evaluation of Elemental Composition of Soils Associated with Ground Nesting Ants in the Family Formicidae in Somerset County, Maine
Ants are keystone organisms and engineers in many ecosystems, playing an important role in nutrient cycling and rearrangement of organic and inorganic materials through foraging, waste management and, in subterranean species, nest construction and maintenance. In this study, I conducted elemental analysis of soils for calcium, copper, iron, potassium, manganese and zinc in and around the colonies of subterranean nesting ants. The two-step analysis used in this study utilizes the efficiency of X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) Spectrometry to look for overall trends in elemental composition followed by Flame Atomic Absorbance (AA) to achieve higher resolution of select elements of interest as justified in XRF results. No relationships were found between concentration of elements with depth nor distance. Additional observations made throughout this research revealed significant taxon-specific differences in elemental concentrations
Sparsity based methods for target localization in multi-sensor radar
In this dissertation, several sparsity-based methods for ground moving target indicator (GMTI) radar with multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) random arrays are proposed. MIMO random arrays are large arrays that employ multiple transmitters and receivers, the positions of the transmitters and the receivers are randomly chosen. Since the resolution of the array depends on the size of the array, MIMO random arrays obtain a high resolution. However, since the positions of the sensors are randomly chosen, the array suffers from large sidelobes which may lead to an increased false alarm probability. The number of sensors of a MIMO random array required to maintain a certain level of peak sidelobes is studied. It is shown that the number of sensors scales with the logarithm of the array aperture, in contrast with a ULA where the number of elements scales linearly with the array aperture. The problem of sparse target detection given space-time observations from MIMO random arrays is presented. The observations are obtained in the presence of Gaussian colored noise of unknown covariance matrix, but for which secondary data is available for its estimation. To solve the detection problem two sparsity-based algorithms, the MP-STAP and the MBMP-STAP algorithms are proposed that utilizes knowledge of the upper bound on the number of targets. A constant false alarm rate (CFAR) sparsity based detector that does not utilize any information on the number of targets referred to as MP-CFAR and MBMP-CFAR are also developed. A performance analysis for the new CFAR detector is also derived, the metrics used to describe the performance of the detector are the probability of false alarm and the probability of detection. A grid refinement procedure is also proposed to eliminate the need for a dense grid which would increase the computational complexity significantly. Expressions for the computational complexity of the proposed CFAR detectors are derived. It is shown that the proposed CFAR detectors outperforms the popular adaptive beamformer at a modest increase in computational complexity
Love Simon as a Modern, Gay Coming-of-Age Narrative: A New Point of Contention and Engagement for Queer and Popular Culture
Historically, coming-of-age romantic comedy stories depicted on screen have been centered around heterosexual couples; the 2018 film Love, Simon challenged conventions by depicting a gay protagonist while building on the traditions of the genre. This paper aims to examine the effect of this film on fan behavior and critical perception of the genre. Examining the impact of Love, Simon reveals how an unconventional narrative both expanded how viewers and critics understood the genre while also inspiring new forms of fan engagement with the film. The author concludes that this groundbreaking narrative, by providing a previously unavailable opportunity for a wider fan base to relate and connect to its central character, correspondingly prompted acts of engagement that were uniquely specific to Love, Simon’s story and powerful enough to carve their own place within the larger Simon metaverse
Increasing low-energy-dense foods and decreasing high-energy-dense foods differently influence weight loss trial outcomes
Background/Objective: Although reducing energy density (ED) enhances weight loss, it is unclear whether all dietary strategies that reduce ED are comparable, hindering effective ED guidelines for obesity treatment. This study examined how changes in number of low-energy-dense (LED) (\u3c4.186 kJ/1.0 kcal g–1) and high-energy-dense (HED) (\u3e12.56 kJ/3.0 kcal g–1) foods consumed affected dietary ED and weight loss within an 18-month weight loss trial.
Methods: This secondary analysis examined data from participants randomized to an energy-restricted lifestyle intervention or lifestyle intervention plus limited non-nutrient dense, energy-dense food variety (n=183). Number of daily LED and HED foods consumed was calculated from three, 24-h dietary recalls and anthropometrics were measured at 0, 6 and 18 months. Multivariable-adjusted generalized linear models and repeated-measures mixed linear models examined associations between 6-month changes in number of LED and HED foods and changes in ED, body mass index (BMI), and percent weight loss at 6 and 18 months.
Results: Among mostly female (58%), White (92%) participants aged 51.9 years following an energy-restricted diet, increasing number of LED foods or decreasing number of HED foods consumed was associated with 6- and 18-month reductions in ED (β=−0.25 to −0.38 kJ g–1 (−0.06 to −0.09 kcal g–1), P\u3c0.001). Only increasing number of LED foods consumed was associated with 6- and 18-month reductions in BMI (β=−0.16 to −0.2 kg m–2, P\u3c0.05) and 6-month reductions in percent weight loss (β=−0.5%, P\u3c0.05). Participants consuming ⩽2 HED foods per day and ⩾6.6 LED foods per day experienced better weight loss outcomes at 6- and 18-month than participants only consuming ⩽2 HED foods per day.
Conclusion: Despite similar reductions in ED from reducing number of HED foods or increasing number of LED foods consumed, only increasing number of LED foods related to weight loss. This provides preliminary evidence that methods used to reduce dietary ED may differentially influence weight loss trajectories. Randomized controlled trials are needed to inform ED recommendations for weight loss
The Plasma Interaction Experiment (PIX) description and test program
The plasma interaction experiment (PIX) is a battery powered preprogrammed auxiliary payload on the LANDSAT-C launch. This experiment is part of a larger program to investigate space plasma interactions with spacecraft surfaces and components. The varying plasma densities encountered during available telemetry coverage periods are deemed sufficient to determine first order interactions between the space plasma environment and the biased experimental surfaces. The specific objectives of the PIX flight experiment are to measure the plasma coupling current and the negative voltage breakdown characteristics of a solar array segment and a gold plated steel disk. Measurements will be made over a range of surface voltages up to plus or minus kilovolt. The orbital environment will provide a range of plasma densities. The experimental surfaces will be voltage biased in a preprogrammed step sequence to optimize the data returned for each plasma region and for the available telemetry coverage
Ways of Talking (and Acting) About Language Reclamation: An Ethnographic Perspective on Learning Lenape in Pennsylvania
The experiences of a community of people learning and teaching Lenape in Pennsylvania provide insights into the complexities of current ways of talking and acting about language reclamation. We illustrate how Native and non-Native participants in a university-based Indigenous language class constructed language, identity, and place in nuanced ways that, although influenced by essentializing discourses of language endangerment, are largely pluralist and reflexive. Rather than counting and conserving fixed languages, the actors in this study focus on locally appropriate language education, undertaken with participatory classroom discourses and practices. We argue that locally responsible, participatory educational responses to language endangerment such as this, although still rare in formal higher education, offer a promising direction in which to invest resources
