    Structure formation and identification in geometrically driven soft matter systems

    Subdividing space through interfaces leads to many space partitions that are relevant to soft matter self-assembly. Prominent examples include cellular media, e.g. soap froths, which are bubbles of air separated by interfaces of soap and water, but also more complex partitions such as bicontinuous minimal surfaces. Using computer simulations, this thesis analyses soft matter systems in terms of the relationship between the physical forces between the system’s constituents and the structure of the resulting interfaces or partitions. The focus is on two systems, copolymeric self-assembly and the so-called Quantizer problem, where the driving force of structure formation, the minimisation of the free-energy, is an interplay of surface area minimisation and stretching contributions, favouring cells of uniform thickness. In the first part of the thesis we address copolymeric phase formation with sharp interfaces. We analyse a columnar copolymer system “forced” to assemble on a spherical surface, where the perfect solution, the hexagonal tiling, is topologically prohibited. For a system of three-armed copolymers, the resulting structure is described by solutions of the so-called Thomson problem, the search of minimal energy configurations of repelling charges on a sphere. We find three intertwined Thomson problem solutions on a single sphere, occurring at a probability depending on the radius of the substrate. We then investigate the formation of amorphous and crystalline structures in the Quantizer system, a particulate model with an energy functional without surface tension that favours spherical cells of equal size. We find that quasi-static equilibrium cooling allows the Quantizer system to crystallise into a BCC ground state, whereas quenching and non-equilibrium cooling, i.e. cooling at slower rates then quenching, leads to an approximately hyperuniform, amorphous state. The assumed universality of the latter, i.e. independence of energy minimisation method or initial configuration, is strengthened by our results. We expand the Quantizer system by introducing interface tension, creating a model that we find to mimic polymeric micelle systems: An order-disorder phase transition is observed with a stable Frank-Caspar phase. The second part considers bicontinuous partitions of space into two network-like domains, and introduces an open-source tool for the identification of structures in electron microscopy images. We expand a method of matching experimentally accessible projections with computed projections of potential structures, introduced by Deng and Mieczkowski (1998). The computed structures are modelled using nodal representations of constant-mean-curvature surfaces. A case study conducted on etioplast cell membranes in chloroplast precursors establishes the double Diamond surface structure to be dominant in these plant cells. We automate the matching process employing deep-learning methods, which manage to identify structures with excellent accuracy

    Circulant weighing matrices

    Circulant weighing matrices are matrices with entries in {-1,0,1} where the rows are pairwise orthogonal and each successive row is obtained from the previous row by a fixed cyclic permutation. They are useful in solving problems where it is necessary to determine as accurately as possible, the "weight" of n "objects" in n "weighings". They have also been successfully used to improve the performance of certain optical instruments such as spectrometers and image scanners. In this thesis I discuss the basic properties of circulant weighing matrices, prove most of the known existence results known to me at the time of writing this thesis and classify the circulant weighing matrices with precisely four nonzero entries in each row. The problem of classifying all circulant weighing matrices is related to the "cyclic projective plane problem". This relationship is established and I have devoted the final chapter of this thesis to cyclic projective planes and their relationship to circulant weighing matrices. The final theorem in this thesis yields information about equations of the kind xyÂŻÂČ=a in cyclic projective planes

    The 2005 AMI system for the transcription of speech in meetings

    In this paper we describe the 2005 AMI system for the transcription\ud of speech in meetings used for participation in the 2005 NIST\ud RT evaluations. The system was designed for participation in the speech\ud to text part of the evaluations, in particular for transcription of speech\ud recorded with multiple distant microphones and independent headset\ud microphones. System performance was tested on both conference room\ud and lecture style meetings. Although input sources are processed using\ud different front-ends, the recognition process is based on a unified system\ud architecture. The system operates in multiple passes and makes use\ud of state of the art technologies such as discriminative training, vocal\ud tract length normalisation, heteroscedastic linear discriminant analysis,\ud speaker adaptation with maximum likelihood linear regression and minimum\ud word error rate decoding. In this paper we describe the system performance\ud on the official development and test sets for the NIST RT05s\ud evaluations. The system was jointly developed in less than 10 months\ud by a multi-site team and was shown to achieve very competitive performance

    An Electricity Price Modeling Framework for Renewable-Dominant Markets

    Renewables introduce new weather-induced patterns and risks for market participants active in the energy commodity sector. We present a flexible framework for power spot prices that is capable of incorporating a weather model for the joint distribution of local weather conditions. This not only allows us to make use of a long history of local weather data in the calibration procedure but also makes it possible to assess how changes in the renewable generation portfolio impact the characteristics of future wholesale spot prices. Empirical tests demonstrate the model’s capability to reproduce salient features of market variables. We furthermore show why our model offers unique benefits for market players compared to existing approaches

    Transcription of conference room meetings: an investigation

    The automatic processing of speech collected in conference style meetings has attracted considerable interest with several large scale projects devoted to this area. In this paper we explore the use of various meeting corpora for the purpose of automatic speech recognition. In particular we investigate the similarity of these resources and how to efficiently use them in the construction of a meeting transcription system. The analysis shows distinctive features for each resource. However the benefit in pooling data and hence the similarity seems sufficient to speak of a generic conference meeting domain . In this context this paper also presents work on development for the AMI meeting transcription system, a joint effort by seven sites working on the AMI (augmented multi-party interaction) project

Resultatet av denna studie kommer att kunna anvÀndas för att fÄ en bild av de krav som stÀlls pÄ entreprenörer och dess verksamhet för att nÄ kommersialisering, samt hur relationen med riskkapitalisten kan hanteras. Metod: Vi har antagit ett företagsekonomiskt angreppssÀtt samt genomfört en kvalitativ studie, i form av en aktörsorienterad processtudie med nyckelpersoner pÄ fallföretaget. Slutsatser: VÄra intervjuer med nyckelpersonerna pÄ fallföretaget samt med forskare inom omrÄdet har givit oss en god grund till att kunna konstatera att entreprenörer och speciellt deras marknadsförstÄelse spelar stor roll för kommersialiseringen av idéer och produkter. Vidare har vi funnit att riskkapitalister kan bidra med mer Àn bara kapital. Det viktigaste de kan bidra med Àr ett brett kontaktnÀt, erfarenheter och att de kan professionalisera verksamheten.     Genetic variation in the serotonin transporter gene (5-HTTLPR, rs25531) influences the analgesic response to the short acting opioid Remifentanil in humans

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>There is evidence from animal studies that serotonin (5-HT) can influence the antinociceptive effects of opioids at the spinal cord level. Therefore, there could be an influence of genetic polymorphisms in the serotonin system on individual variability in response to opioid treatment of pain. The serotonin transporter (5-HTT) is a key regulator of serotonin metabolism and availability and its gene harbors several known polymorphisms that are known to affect 5-HTT expression (e.g. 5-HTTLPR, rs25531). The aim of this study was to investigate if the triallelic 5-HTTLPR influences pain sensitivity or the analgesic effect of opioids in humans. 43 healthy volunteers (12 men, 31 women, mean age 26 years) underwent heat pain stimulations before and after intravenous injection of Remifentanil; a rapid and potent opioid drug acting on Ό-type receptors. Subjects rated their perceived pain on a visual analogue scale (VAS). All participants were genotyped for the 5-HTTLPR and the rs25531 polymorphism. We recruited by advertising, with no history of drug abuse, chronic pain or psychiatric disorders.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>At baseline, there was no difference in pain ratings for the different triallelic 5-HTTLPR genotype groups. However, the opiod drug had a differential analgesic effect depending on the triallelic 5-HTTLPR genotype. Remifentanil had a significantly better analgesic effect in individuals with a genotype coding for low 5-HTT expression (S<sub>A</sub>/S<sub>A </sub>and S<sub>A</sub>/L<sub>G</sub>) as compared to those with high expression(L<sub>A</sub>/L<sub>A</sub>), p < 0.02. The analgesic effect for the three different genotype groups was linear to degree of 5-HTT expression.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This is the first report showing an influence of the triallelic 5-HTTLPR on pain sensitivity or the analgesic effect of opioids in humans. Previously the 5-HTTLPR s-allele has been associated with higher risk of developing chronic pain conditions but in this study we show that the genotype coding for low 5-HTT expression is associated with a better analgesic effect of an opioid. The s-allele has been associated with downregulation of 5-HT1 receptors and we suggest that individuals with a desensitization of 5-HT1 receptors have an increased analgesic response to opioids during acute pain stimuli, but may still be at increased risk of developing chronic pain conditions.</p

    The class of the locus of intermediate Jacobians of cubic threefolds

    We study the locus of intermediate Jacobians of cubic threefolds within the moduli space of complex principally polarized abelian fivefolds, and its generalization to arbitrary genus - the locus of abelian varieties with a singular odd two-torsion point on the theta divisor. Assuming that this locus has expected codimension (which we show to be true for genus up to 5), we compute the class of this locus, and of is closure in the perfect cone toroidal compactification, in the Chow, homology, and the tautological ring. We work out the cases of genus up to 5 in detail, obtaining explicit expressions for the classes of the closures of the locus of products of an elliptic curve and a hyperelliptic genus 3 curve, in moduli of principally polarized abelian fourfolds, and of the locus of intermediate Jacobians in genus 5. In the course of our computation we also deal with various intersections of boundary divisors of a level toroidal compactification, which is of independent interest in understanding the cohomology and Chow rings of the moduli spaces.Comment: v2: new section 9 on the geometry of the boundary of the locus of intermediate Jacobians of cubic threefolds.
