    Love in the modern world (Designing the social presence for long-distance couples)

    One of the hallmarks of modern society is that there are increasing number of people who are geographically separated from their significant others. I was interested initially in how technology can help maintain long-distance relationships. This interest led me to conduct this project focusing on couples that are involved in long-distance relationships (LDRs). Long-distance couples have to experience more restricted communication than geographically close couples, which works to potentially hinder the couple’s ability to maintain intimacy in relationships. Due to emerging technologies, many individuals are able to stay in touch through the use of modern communication tools. But this communication between couples can be more complicated and deeper than everyday interpersonal communication. To understand these unique needs more deeply, interviews and observations were conducted to find novel design opportunities. Through a human-centered design approach, I designed a mobile application to enhance social presence over long distances. It helps LDR couples connect seamlessly on a daily basis, and to easily discover mutual topics, activities, and interests

    Refinement of Embedded Payment Links via User Reports

    Payment applications make use of QR codes, NFC tags, etc. to encode information related to particular merchant physical assets and locations. Large scale deployment of such codes is difficult and prone to human error since the payment application provider needs to access merchant information to generate codes specific to each asset and the merchant needs to deploy the codes to specific matching locations. This disclosure describes the use of codes with unique but generic embedded links that can be deployed at any physical asset. When a payment is attempted by scanning such a code, the user is requested to provide information that serves to identify the physical asset. When a sufficient number of reliable user reports are received, the generic link associated with the code is updated to include the user-provided information to convert it into an asset-specific link that can be utilized to associate payments via the payment application with the specific physical asset

    Experimental investigation of rotordynamic coefficients for the labyrinth seals with and without shunt injection

    Shunt injection serves an important role in the labyrinth seal static and rotordynamic characteristics which are important in the prediction of turbomachinery stability. This paper analyzed how the shunt injection affects the seal rotordynamic characteristics, and presented an improved impedance method based on unbalanced synchronous excitation to identify the rotordynamic coefficients of labyrinth seals on a rotor test rig. The influences of the rotational speed and the inlet/outlet pressure ratio on the rotordynamic characteristics of shunt injection seals with and without shunt injection were identified and analyzed. The experimental results reveal that all the seal rotordynamic coefficients increase with the rotational speed, and the inlet/outlet pressure ratio. The shunt injection contributes to decreasing the seal cross-coupled stiffness, and increasing the direct damping. The shunt injection plays an important role in decreasing the effective stiffness coefficient, and increasing the effective damping coefficient. The shunt injection can effectively improve the rotor stability. The experimental results lay the foundation for designing the annular seals with shunt injection

    Towards Robust Real-Time Scene Text Detection: From Semantic to Instance Representation Learning

    Due to the flexible representation of arbitrary-shaped scene text and simple pipeline, bottom-up segmentation-based methods begin to be mainstream in real-time scene text detection. Despite great progress, these methods show deficiencies in robustness and still suffer from false positives and instance adhesion. Different from existing methods which integrate multiple-granularity features or multiple outputs, we resort to the perspective of representation learning in which auxiliary tasks are utilized to enable the encoder to jointly learn robust features with the main task of per-pixel classification during optimization. For semantic representation learning, we propose global-dense semantic contrast (GDSC), in which a vector is extracted for global semantic representation, then used to perform element-wise contrast with the dense grid features. To learn instance-aware representation, we propose to combine top-down modeling (TDM) with the bottom-up framework to provide implicit instance-level clues for the encoder. With the proposed GDSC and TDM, the encoder network learns stronger representation without introducing any parameters and computations during inference. Equipped with a very light decoder, the detector can achieve more robust real-time scene text detection. Experimental results on four public datasets show that the proposed method can outperform or be comparable to the state-of-the-art on both accuracy and speed. Specifically, the proposed method achieves 87.2% F-measure with 48.2 FPS on Total-Text and 89.6% F-measure with 36.9 FPS on MSRA-TD500 on a single GeForce RTX 2080 Ti GPU.Comment: Accepted by ACM MM 202

    Impact of sudden stratospheric warmings on the neutral density, temperature and wind in the MLT region

    In this study, the neutral density and horizontal wind observed by the four meteor radars, as well as the temperature measured by the Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) onboard the Aura satellite are used to examine the response of neutral density, wind, and temperature in the MLT region to the stratospheric sudden warmings (SSWs) during 2005 to 2021 in the Northern Hemisphere. The four meteor radars include the Svalbard (78.3°N, 16°E) and Tromsø (69.6°N, 19.2°E) meteor radars at high latitudes and the Mohe (53.5°N, 122.3°E) and Beijing (40.3°N, 116.2°E) meteor radars at middle latitudes. The superposed epoch analysis results indicate that: 1) the neutral density over Svalbard and Tromsø at high latitude increased at the beginning of SSWs and decreased after the zonal mean stratospheric temperature reached the maximum. However, the neutral density over Mohe at midlatitudes decreased in neutral density at the beginning of SSW and increase after the zonal mean stratospheric temperature reached the maximum. 2) The zonal wind at high latitudes show a westward enhancement at the beginning of SSWs and then shows an eastward enhancement after the stratospheric temperature reaches maximum. However, the zonal wind at midlatitudes shows an opposite variation to at high latitudes, with an eastward enhancement at the onset and changing to westward enhancements after the stratospheric temperature maximum. The meridional winds at high and midlatitudes show a southward enhancement after the onset of SSW and then show a northward enhancement after the stratospheric temperature maximum. 3) In general, the temperature in the MLT region decreased throughout SSWs. However, as the latitudes decrease, the temperature cooling appears to lag a few days to the higher latitudes, and the degree of cooling will decrease relatively

    Acupuncture for insomnia symptoms in hypertensive patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    PurposeIn the realm of pain management, traditional Chinese medicine, specifically acupuncture, has garnered increasing attention. This meta-analysis pioneers the evaluation of acupuncture’s effectiveness in treating insomnia among hypertensive patients.MethodsWe conducted a comprehensive search across several databases—PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, WANFANG, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Sinomed, and the Chinese Journal of Science and Technology (VIP). Additionally, forward and backward articles of studies published from the inception of these databases until 10 September 2023, were reviewed. This systematic review and meta-analysis included all randomized controlled trials (RCTs) focusing on acupuncture for insomnia in hypertensive patients, without imposing language or date restrictions. We rigorously assessed all outcome measures reported in these trials. The evidence was synthesized by calculating the difference between mean differences (MD) in symptom change. The quality of the evidence was determined using the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool. This study is registered with PROSPERO under number CRD42023461760.ResultsOur analysis included 16 RCTs, comprising 1,309 patients. The findings revealed that acupuncture was significantly more effective than the control group in reducing insomnia symptoms, as indicated by a greater decrease in the PSQI score (MD = −3.1, 95% CI [−3.77 to −2.62], p < 0.00001). Additionally, improvements in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure were more pronounced in the acupuncture group compared to the control group (SBP: MD = −10.31, 95% CI [−16.98 to −3.64], p = 0.002; DBP: MD = −5.71, 95% CI [−8.19 to −3.23], p < 0.00001). These results suggest that acupuncture not only improves sleep quality but also lowers blood pressure in patients suffering from hypertension and insomnia. Further research is warranted to elucidate optimal acupuncture points and the duration of treatment for maximized therapeutic effect.Systematic review registration:https://www.crd.york.ac.uk/prospero, CRD42023461760

    Human MCTS1-dependent translation of JAK2 is essential for IFN-γ immunity to mycobacteria.

    Human inherited disorders of interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) immunity underlie severe mycobacterial diseases. We report X-linked recessive MCTS1 deficiency in men with mycobacterial disease from kindreds of different ancestries (from China, Finland, Iran, and Saudi Arabia). Complete deficiency of this translation re-initiation factor impairs the translation of a subset of proteins, including the kinase JAK2 in all cell types tested, including T lymphocytes and phagocytes. JAK2 expression is sufficiently low to impair cellular responses to interleukin-23 (IL-23) and partially IL-12, but not other JAK2-dependent cytokines. Defective responses to IL-23 preferentially impair the production of IFN-γ by innate-like adaptive mucosal-associated invariant T cells (MAIT) and γδ T lymphocytes upon mycobacterial challenge. Surprisingly, the lack of MCTS1-dependent translation re-initiation and ribosome recycling seems to be otherwise physiologically redundant in these patients. These findings suggest that X-linked recessive human MCTS1 deficiency underlies isolated mycobacterial disease by impairing JAK2 translation in innate-like adaptive T lymphocytes, thereby impairing the IL-23-dependent induction of IFN-γ
