Time-Frequency Nexus between Tourism Development, Economic Growth, Energy Consumption, and Ecological Footprint in Singapore

    Get PDF
Singapore has been listed as one of the top-visited countries and has the highest ecological deficit. Despite the abundance of previous studies, the distinction between short, medium, and long term by decomposing tourism development, economic growth, energy consumption, and ecological footprint has been largely ignored. This study aims to investigate the lead-lag nexus structures between ecological footprint and Singapore's economic activities from 1978 to 2016. By adopting the wavelet analysis and scale-by-scale Granger causality test, the outcomes show that energy consumption positively impacts ecological footprint at high frequencies, while tourism and economic growth positively drive ecological footprint at high and medium frequencies. We also find that the positive impact of macroeconomic variables on ecological footprint has not been evident since 2003. Additionally, the wavelet-based Granger test confirms a bi-directional causal between economic growth and ecological footprint at all frequencies, whilst there is a bi-directional relationship between tourism, energy consumption, and ecological footprint at high frequency. Based on these findings, the research may further strengthen the belief of Singapore’s policy-makers on the promotion of tourism and suggests some helpful lessons for emerging countries

Actuator saturation control of a benchmark structure using hedge-algebras-based fuzzy controller

    Get PDF
In this paper, the problem of actuator saturation control of a benchmark structure using hedge-algebras-based fuzzy controller (HAC) is presented. In HAC, linguistic values of linguistic terms are obtained through semantically quantifying mappings (SQMs) based on few fuzziness parameters of each linguistic variable without using any fuzzy set and inherent order relationships between linguistic values of each linguistic variable are always ensured. Hence, the design of a HAC leads to determining parameters of SQMs, which are fuzziness measures of primary terms and linguistic hedges occurring in a fuzzy model. As a case study, a HAC is designed to actuator saturation control of a benchmark structure with active bracing system (ABS) subjected to earthquake excitation. Control performance of the controller is also discussed in order to show advantages of the proposed method

Active control of a three-story building using hedge-algebras-based fuzzy controller

In this paper, conventional and hedge-algebras-based fuzzy controllers, respectively denoted by FC and HAFC, are designed to suppress vibrations of a three-story building against earthquake. The structural system is simulated against the ground accelerations of the El Centro earthquake in USA on May 18th, 1940; the Northridge earthquake in USA on January 17th, 1994 and the Kobe earthquake in Japan on January 16th, 1995. The control effects of FC and HAFC are compared via the time history of the story displacements of the structure

The linear invariants (dn ) and (℩) for spaces of germs of holomorphic functions on compact subsets of Cn

    Get PDF
For a compact subset K of Cn, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for [H(K)]0 to have the property (DN), and similarly for the property (℩). We also show that H(D) is isomorphic to H(∆ n), where ∆n is the unit polydisc in Cn and D is any bounded Reinhardt domain in Cn. This last result requires a generalization of the classical Hartogs phenomenon

ANALYZING AND OPTIMIZING OF A PFLUGER COLUMN

ABSTRACTThe optimal shape of a Pfluger column is determined  by using Pontryagin’s maximum principle (PMP). The governing equation of the problem is reduced to a boundary-value problem for a single second order nonlinear differential equation. The results of the analysis problem are obtained by Spectral method. Necessary conditions for the maximum value of the first eigenvalue corresponding to given column volume areestablished to determine the optimal distribution of cross-sectional area along the column axis. Keywords: optimal shape; Pontryagin’s maximum principle

In this study, the control problem of a pendulum using hedge-algebras-based fuzzy controller (HAC) containing actuator saturation is presented. In HAC, linguistic values of linguistic terms are obtained through semantically quantifying mappings (SQMs) based on several fuzzy parameters of each linguistic variable without using any fuzzy set and inherent order relationships between linguistic values are always ensured. Hence, the design of a HAC leads to determining parameters of SQMs. Numerical results of HAC are compared with those of an analogical conventional fuzzy controller (FC) in order to show advantages of the proposed method. In this study, the control problem of a pendulum using hedge-algebras-based fuzzy controller (HAC) containing actuator saturation is presented. Optimal design for eigen-frequencies of a longitudinal bar using Pontryagin's maximum principle considering the influence of concentrated mass

    Get PDF
In this paper, the problem of optimal design for eigen-frequencies of a longitudinal bar using Pontryagin's maximum principle (PMP) considering the influence of concentrated mass is presented. The necessary optimality condition when simultaneously maximizing system's eigen frequencies and minimizing system's weight considering the influence of concentrated mass is established by using Maier objective functional in order to control the final state of the objective functional. By considering eigen frequencies as state variables, the analogy coefficient k in the necessary optimality condition is explicitly determined. Numerical results obtained in this paper include: (1) the bar's optimal configurations as well as frequency responses in different cases of objective functions; (2) the Pareto front for the system's first eigen frequency and weight; (3) the influence of concentrated mass on the bar's optimal configuration

The Impact of TikTok UGC Videos on Online Purchase Intention: Mediating Role of Cognitive States

    Get PDF
Background: User-Generated Content (UGC) videos have received considerable attention in recent years thanks to their great potential for buyers and sellers. However, the effect of this content on consumer behavior remains unclear, especially in the context of developing countries (e.g., Vietnam). By applying the Stimulus-Organism-Response model (S-O-R model), this paper examines the effect of UGC videos on online purchase intention. Moreover, the mediating role of cognitive responses, consisting of perceived credibility, perceived diagnosticity, and mental imagery, is also examined to offer valuable insights to businesses, enabling them to leverage and effectively promote the trends of UGC videos. Method: A convenience sampling method was employed to collect the data. A total of 318 valid respondents participated in this survey. The data was analyzed with the Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling method (PLS-SEM). Results: The findings show that UGC videos have a direct impact on online purchase intention. This paper also verified that cognitive states mediate the relationship between stimuli and subsequent behavioral intentions. Conclusion: Our research findings enrich the literature on consumer’s online purchase intentions by applying the S-O-R framework by highlighting the role of cognitive responses, and improving generalizability by contributing additional consumer behavior findings in developing Asian nations. Moreover, this paper offers businesses insights into the formation of customers\u27 purchase intentions while watching UGC videos. Based on that, this paper raises practical recommendations regarding promoting the UGC video trend and creating UGC videos effectively to improve the cognitive states perceived by customers, including credibility, diagnostic value, and mental imagery
