Rigid vortices in MgB2
Magnetic relaxation of high-pressure synthesized MgB bulks with different
thickness is investigated. It is found that the superconducting dia-magnetic
moment depends on time in a logarithmic way; the flux-creep activation energy
decreases linearly with the current density (as expected by Kim-Anderson
model); and the activation energy increases linearly with the thickness of
sample when it is thinner than about 1 mm. These features suggest that the
vortices in the MgB are rather rigid, and the pinning and creep can be well
described by Kim-Anderson model.Comment: Typo corrected & reference adde
Shares in the EMCA : the time is ripe for true no par value shares in the EU, and the 2nd directive is not an obstacle
The most interesting proposal in the draft European Model Companies Act ( EMCA) concerning shares and the focus of this Article is the recommendation to introduce true no par value shares, as they have been in use in the US for many years and were introduced in Australia, New Zealand but also Finland more recently. Contrary to what has often been assumed, the 2nd EU Company Law Directive does not preclude no par value shares. There is nothing in the wording of the Directive to suggest otherwise, and the reference in the Directive to shares without a nominal value is a reference to Belgian law, which has allowed true no par value shares in all but name since at least 1913. EU member states could therefore introduce such shares even for public companies. True no par value shares offer a far more flexible framework in case of capital increases or mergers, but since under a no par value system there is no link between par value and shareholder rights, additional disclosure about these rights might be warranted under a no par value system. Traditional par value shares offer no protection to creditors, shareholders or other stakeholders, so that their abolition should not be mourned. The threat of new share issues at an unacceptably high discount is more efficiently countered by disclosure and shareholder decision rights
A Redox-Sensitive Luciferase Assay for Determining the Localization and Topology of Endoplasmic Reticulum Proteins
Correct localization and transmembrane topology are crucial for the proteins residing and functioning in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). We have developed a rapid and convenient assay, based on the redox-sensitive luciferase from Gaussia princeps (Gluc) and green fluorescence protein (GFP), to determine the localization or topology of ER proteins. Using the tandem Gluc-GFP reporter fused to different positions of a target protein, we successfully characterized the topologies of two ER transmembrane proteins Herp and HRD1 that are involved in the ER quality control system. This assay method may also be applicable to the proteins in secretory pathway, plasma membrane, and other compartments of cells

Strong quantum fluctuation of vortices in the new superconductor
By using transport and magnetic measurement, the upper critical field
and the irreversibility line has been determined. A
big separation between and has been found showing the
existence of a quantum vortex liquid state induced by quantum fluctuation of
vortices in the new superconductor . Further investigation on the
magnetic relaxation shows that both the quantum tunneling and the thermally
activated flux creep weakly depends on temperature. But when the melting field
is approached, a drastic rising of the relaxation rate is observed.
This may imply that the melting of the vortex matter at a finite temperature is
also induced by the quantum fluctuation of vortices.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Rainfall variations in central Indo-Pacific over the past 2,700 y
Tropical rainfall variability is closely linked to meridional shifts of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) and zonal movements of the Walker circulation. The characteristics and mechanisms of tropical rainfall variations on centennial to decadal scales are, however, still unclear. Here, we reconstruct a replicated stalagmite-based 2,700-y-long, continuous record of rainfall for the deeply convective northern central Indo-Pacific (NCIP) region. Our record reveals decreasing rainfall in the NCIP over the past 2,700 y, similar to other records from the northern tropics. Notable centennial- to decadal-scale dry climate episodes occurred in both the NCIP and the southern central Indo-Pacific (SCIP) during the 20th century [Current Warm Period (CWP)] and the Medieval Warm Period (MWP), resembling enhanced El Niño-like conditions. Further, we developed a 2,000-y-long ITCZ shift index record that supports an overall southward ITCZ shift in the central Indo-Pacific and indicates southward mean ITCZ positions during the early MWP and the CWP. As a result, the drying trend since the 20th century in the northern tropics is similar to that observed during the past warm period, suggesting that a possible anthropogenic forcing of rainfall remains indistinguishable from natural variability
Numerical Analysis of a Linear-Implicit Average Scheme for Generalized Benjamin-Bona-Mahony-Burgers Equation
A linear-implicit finite difference scheme is given for the initial-boundary problem of GBBMBurgers equation, which is convergent and unconditionally stable. The unique solvability of numerical solutions is shown. A priori estimate and second-order convergence of the finite difference approximate solution are discussed using energy method. Numerical results demonstrate that the scheme is efficient and accurate
