Stratified spatiotemporal chaos in anisotropic reaction-diffusion systems
Numerical simulations of two dimensional pattern formation in an anisotropic
bistable reaction-diffusion medium reveal a new dynamical state, stratified
spatiotemporal chaos, characterized by strong correlations along one of the
principal axes. Equations that describe the dependence of front motion on the
angle illustrate the mechanism leading to stratified chaos

The Reading Therapist and Parent Conference
Parent conferences are vital and can play a decisive role in the success of the remedial reading program. As the reading therapist confers with parents he has the opportunity to explain the nature of the corrective program and also the particular remediation being provided for their child. This encourages the parents to an understanding of both the program and the child\u27s reading problem. The therapist also gains a better concept of the whole child, the emotional atmosphere of the family, and the total home environment as it relates to the child\u27s reading problem. Ultimately and of greatest importance are the advantages to the child which evolve from the conference between the reading specialist and his parents
Uniting Efforts in Effective Reading Remediation
Nearly every classroom contains some children who have not responded well to a developmental reading program and need remedial help from the reading specialist. These students have not achieved up to their full potential for a variety of reasons, and unless they receive remedial instruction the gap between achievement and potential will grow wider. The reading therapist is faced with the primary responsibility of providing the student\u27s remedial work. However, it is not his task alone as the classroom teacher shares in this obligation. The child spends most of his time in the regular classroom and only a few short sessions with the reading specialist each week. Therefore, it is important and necessary that the classroom teacher and the reading therapist should cooperatively plan the student\u27s program for remedial work
Breathing Spots in a Reaction-Diffusion System
A quasi-2-dimensional stationary spot in a disk-shaped chemical reactor is
observed to bifurcate to an oscillating spot when a control parameter is
increased beyond a critical value. Further increase of the control parameter
leads to the collapse and disappearance of the spot. Analysis of a bistable
activator-inhibitor model indicates that the observed behavior is a consequence
of interaction of the front with the boundary near a parity breaking front

Four-phase patterns in forced oscillatory systems
We investigate pattern formation in self-oscillating systems forced by an
external periodic perturbation. Experimental observations and numerical studies
of reaction-diffusion systems and an analysis of an amplitude equation are
presented. The oscillations in each of these systems entrain to rational
multiples of the perturbation frequency for certain values of the forcing
frequency and amplitude. We focus on the subharmonic resonant case where the
system locks at one fourth the driving frequency, and four-phase rotating
spiral patterns are observed at low forcing amplitudes. The spiral patterns are
studied using an amplitude equation for periodically forced oscillating
systems. The analysis predicts a bifurcation (with increasing forcing) from
rotating four-phase spirals to standing two-phase patterns. This bifurcation is
also found in periodically forced reaction-diffusion equations, the
FitzHugh-Nagumo and Brusselator models, even far from the onset of oscillations
where the amplitude equation analysis is not strictly valid. In a
Belousov-Zhabotinsky chemical system periodically forced with light we also
observe four-phase rotating spiral wave patterns. However, we have not observed
the transition to standing two-phase patterns, possibly because with increasing
light intensity the reaction kinetics become excitable rather than oscillatory.Comment: 11 page
Resonance tongues and patterns in periodically forced reaction-diffusion systems
Various resonant and near-resonant patterns form in a light-sensitive
Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction in response to a spatially-homogeneous
time-periodic perturbation with light. The regions (tongues) in the forcing
frequency and forcing amplitude parameter plane where resonant patterns form
are identified through analysis of the temporal response of the patterns.
Resonant and near-resonant responses are distinguished. The unforced BZ
reaction shows both spatially-uniform oscillations and rotating spiral waves,
while the forced system shows patterns such as standing-wave labyrinths and
rotating spiral waves. The patterns depend on the amplitude and frequency of
the perturbation, and also on whether the system responds to the forcing near
the uniform oscillation frequency or the spiral wave frequency. Numerical
simulations of a forced FitzHugh-Nagumo reaction-diffusion model show both
resonant and near-resonant patterns similar to the BZ chemical system
Impact of chemotherapy regimen and rituximab in adult Burkitt lymphoma: a retrospective population-based study from the Nordic Lymphoma Group.
BackgroundStandard treatment of adult Burkitt lymphoma is not defined due to the lack of randomised trials. In this situation, population-based data may represent a useful contribution in order to identify an optimal treatment strategy.Patients and methodsThe aims of this study were to investigate the outcome for adult HIV-negative BL with different chemotherapy regimens, and to assess possible improvement within the time frame of the study. The study population was identified through the Swedish and Danish lymphoma registries 2000-2009.ResultsA total of 258 patients were identified. Since 2000, overall survival (OS) improved significantly only for younger patients (<65 years). Intensive regimens such as the Berlin-Frankfurt-MĂĽnster, hyper-fractionated cyclophosphamide, vincristine, doxorubicin, and dexamethasone (hyper-CVAD) and cyclophosphamide, vincristine, doxorubicin, methotrexate, ifosfamide, etoposide, and cytarabine (CODOX-M/IVAC) were associated with a favourable 2-year OS of 82%, 83%, and 69%, respectively. The low-intensive CHOP/CHOEP regimens achieved a 2-year OS of 38.8%, confirming their inadequacy for the treatment of BL. In a multivariate analysis, rituximab was not significantly associated with improved OS.ConclusionsIn this population-based retrospective series of adult BL, intensive chemotherapy regimens were associated with favourable outcome. The impact of the addition of rituximab remains uncertain and warrants further investigation
Cerebrospinal fluid HIV-1 RNA, intrathecal immunoactivation, and drug concentrations after treatment with a combination of saquinavir, nelfinavir, and two nucleoside analogues: the M61022 study
BACKGROUND: The way various antiretroviral drugs and drug combinations affect HIV-1 infection in the central nervous system is still largely unknown. The aim of this study was to determine the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) steady-state concentrations of saquinavir and nelfinavir in relation to plasma concentrations, and to study their effect in combination with two nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) on CSF viral loads, intrathecal immunoactivation, and blood-brain barrier integrity. METHODS: Paired CSF and plasma samples from 8 antiretroviral-naïve HIV-1 infected patients starting combination therapy with saquinavir, nelfinavir, and two nucleoside analogues were collected prior to treatment, and again after approximately 12 and 48 weeks of antiretroviral therapy. Additional plasma samples were taken at weeks 2, 4, 8, 24, and 36. The concentrations of protease inhibitors were analysed, as were levels of HIV-1 RNA, CD4+ T-cell count, β2-microglobulin, neopterin, albumin ratio, IgG index, and monocytic cell count. RESULTS: None of the patients in the study presented with HIV-1 RNA < 50 copies/mL in CSF or plasma prior to treatment, compared to 5/7 at the end of the study. Signs of cell-mediated intrathecal immunoactivation, measured by neopterin and β2-microglobulin, decreased significantly in both CSF and serum, although only 1/7 reached normal CSF neopterin levels after 48 weeks of treatment. There was no significant reduction of albumin ratio, IgG index or CSF monocytic cell count. Saquinavir median (range) concentrations were < 2.5 (< 2.5–96.0) nM unbound in plasma, and < 2.5 (< 2.5–9.0) nM total in CSF. Nelfinavir median (range) concentrations were 10.0 (< 2.0–31.0) nM unbound in plasma, and < 2.0 (< 2.0–23.0) nM total in CSF. Saquinavir and nelfinavir were detectable in 7/15 and 9/15 CSF samples, respectively. CONCLUSION: Saquinavir and nelfinavir, in combination with two NRTIs, decrease the CSF viral load and, to a lesser extent, intrathecal immunoactivation. We found reasonably high CSF concentrations of nelfinavir, but suboptimal concentrations of saquinavir
Phase Dynamics of Nearly Stationary Patterns in Activator-Inhibitor Systems
The slow dynamics of nearly stationary patterns in a FitzHugh-Nagumo model
are studied using a phase dynamics approach. A Cross-Newell phase equation
describing slow and weak modulations of periodic stationary solutions is
derived. The derivation applies to the bistable, excitable, and the Turing
unstable regimes. In the bistable case stability thresholds are obtained for
the Eckhaus and the zigzag instabilities and for the transition to traveling
waves. Neutral stability curves demonstrate the destabilization of stationary
planar patterns at low wavenumbers to zigzag and traveling modes. Numerical
solutions of the model system support the theoretical findings
