The use of dual-purpose chickens is a strategy to avoid killing one-day-old male chicks of egg laying lines. Lohmann Dual (LD) is a novel dual-purpose chicken line created by the crossbreeding of layer and broiler lines. However, many of the cardiovascular diseases of broilers are likely to be associated with intensive genetic selection for growth and feed conversion efficiency. This study aimed to compare the macroscopic and microscopic structure of the heart and the aorta of the LD chicken line with that of the broiler chicken line, Ross 308 (Ross) under typical husbandry conditions for meat production. Eighty, one-day-old male chicks of each line were housed for 5 weeks (Ross) and 9 weeks (LD). Six birds of each line were sampled weekly. Heart mass, thickness of ventricular walls, cardiomyocyte size and blood capillary density as well as aortic diameter and thickness, number of elastic lamellae and elastic fiber percentage in the aortic wall were determined. The growth patterns of the heart were the same in the two lines. Although LD chickens had a lower absolute heart mass than that of Ross chickens, the relative heart mass in both lines was similar. The cardiomyocytes of LD chickens were larger than those of Ross’s of the same body weight (BW), nevertheless both lines had similar thicknesses of their ventricular walls. The blood capillary density was greater in the LD heart than in that of the Ross heart. The aorta of LD chickens had proportionally; a greater aortic lumen radius, larger numbers of elastic lamellae and more elastic fibers than in Ross chickens. Our results suggest that the heart and aorta of the LD chickens have not been disadvantaged by their intensive genetic selection; furthermore, LD chickens have a better myocardial capillary supply and better aortic mechanical properties than those of Ross chickens

Electrohydrodynamic Instability of Two Superposed Viscous Dielectric Fluids Flowing down an Inclined Plane with Thermal Conductivity Variation

The linear electrohydrodynamic instability of two superposed viscous dielectric fluids flowing down an inclined plane in the presence of thermal conductivity variation and applied electric fields is investigated. Using long-wavelength approximation, a new instability is presented. It is shown that when there is a variation in thermal conductivity in the fluid even in absence of electric fields or when applied electric fields are present even in absence of thermal conductivity variation, instability can occur under a longitudinal gravitational field. The effects of various parameters as Prandtl number, Reynolds number, electric field, inclination angle, and thermal conductivity variation on the stability of the system are discussed analytically and numerically in detail. The presence of electric field is important to prevent the drop out of the analysis when there is no stratification in thermal conductivity. From Gapped Excitons to Gapless Triplons in One Dimension

Often, exotic phases appear in the phase diagrams between conventional phases. Their elementary excitations are of particular interest. Here, we consider the example of the ionic Hubbard model in one dimension. This model is a band insulator (BI) for weak interaction and a Mott insulator (MI) for strong interaction. Inbetween, a spontaneously dimerized insulator (SDI) occurs which is governed by energetically low-lying charge and spin degrees of freedom. Applying a systematically controlled version of the continuous unitary transformations (CUTs) we are able to determine the dispersions of the elementary charge and spin excitations and of their most relevant bound states on equal footing. The key idea is to start from an externally dimerized system using the relative weak interdimer coupling as small expansion parameter which finally is set to unity to recover the original model.Comment: 18 pages, 10 figure

Long term effects of maternal protein restriction on postnatal lung alveoli development of rat offspring

Poor nutrition of women during pregnancy causes reduction in foetal growth and can adversely affect the development of the foetal lungs. The purpose of the present study was to assess the effects of maternal protein restriction on the postnatal lung development in neonatal period, and on lung structure in adult rat offspring. Female virgin Sprague-Dawley albino rats (more than 200 g) were used. One male rat was introduced into a cage with one female for matting. Once the pregnancy was confirmed, pregnant rats were divided into two main groups; each consists of 6 female as follow: 1 — normally nourished group; 2 — protein deficient group. After delivery, offspring were subdivided into three groups: 1 day after delivery, 2 weeks and 2 months postnatal. Rat body and lung weight were recorded and ratio of lung weight to body weight was assessed. Total plasma protein and serum albumin were assessed for all groups. Lung tissue stained with H&E for histological and morphometric analysis. Immunohistochemistry was performed to evaluate the number of cells positive for pulmonary surfactant protein A. Our results showed that protein restriction interfere with neonatal and postnatal lung development resulting in morphological and morphometric changes of normal lung development. We concluded that protein deficiency lead to developmental retardation of lung

A high-finesse Fabry-Perot cavity with a frequency-doubled continuous wave green laser (532~nm) has been built and installed in Hall A of Jefferson Lab for high precision Compton polarimetry. The infrared (1064~nm) beam from a ytterbium-doped fiber amplifier seeded by a Nd:YAG nonplanar ring oscillator laser is frequency doubled in a single-pass periodically poled MgO:LiNbO3_{3} crystal. The maximum achieved green power at 5 W IR pump power is 1.74 W with a total conversion efficiency of 34.8\%. The green beam is injected into the optical resonant cavity and enhanced up to 3.7~kW with a corresponding enhancement of 3800. The polarization transfer function has been measured in order to determine the intra-cavity circular laser polarization within a measurement uncertainty of 0.7\%. The PREx experiment at Jefferson Lab used this system for the first time and achieved 1.0\% precision in polarization measurements of an electron beam with energy and current of 1.0~GeV and 50~μ\muA.Comment: 20 pages, 22 figures, revised version of arXiv:1601.00251v1, submitted to NIM

Myocardial injury in major aortic surgery

AbstractPurpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of major aortic surgery and its associated oxidative stress and injury on the myocardium. Methods: Plasma from 27 patients who underwent thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm (TAAA) repair and 17 patients who underwent infrarenal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair was collected at incision, aortic crossclamping, and reperfusion and 1, 8, and 24 hours thereafter. Samples were assayed for the myocardial specific protein troponin-T, total antioxidant status, and lipid hydroperoxides. Results: Ten patients experienced cardiac dysfunction in the first 24 hours after surgery (eight patients in the TAAA group and two patients in the AAA group). Immediately after reperfusion, total antioxidant status levels dropped in all patients with TAAA and with AAA; this was more marked in patients with TAAA, leading to a significant difference between the two groups at this time point and for up to 1 hour thereafter (P <.01). Patients with TAAA showed a sharp rise in lipid hydroperoxide levels immediately after reperfusion, and levels were significantly higher than in patients with AAA (P =.0007). In patients with AAA, no significant change in troponin-T was observed throughout the study period; whereas in patients with TAAA, levels were significantly elevated at 8 and 24 hours after reperfusion (P <.01). Troponin-T levels significantly correlated with total antioxidant status (r = –0.5) and lipid hydroperoxides (r = 0.78) but not with systolic blood pressure. Conclusion: Supracoeliac aortic crossclamping is associated with a significant release of the myocardial injury marker troponin-T. This seems to correlate with the severity of oxidative rather than hemodynamic stresses. Ameliorating oxidative injury during TAAA surgery may therefore have a cardioprotective effect. Excitation Spectrum of One-dimensional Extended Ionic Hubbard Model

We use Perturbative Continuous Unitary Transformations (PCUT) to study the one dimensional Extended Ionic Hubbard Model (EIHM) at half-filling in the band insulator region. The extended ionic Hubbard model, in addition to the usual ionic Hubbard model, includes an inter-site nearest-neighbor (n.n.) repulsion, VV. We consider the ionic potential as unperturbed part of the Hamiltonian, while the hopping and interaction (quartic) terms are treated as perturbation. We calculate total energy and ionicity in the ground state. Above the ground state, (i) we calculate the single particle excitation spectrum by adding an electron or a hole to the system. (ii) the coherence-length and spectrum of electron-hole excitation are obtained. Our calculations reveal that for V=0, there are two triplet bound state modes and three singlet modes, two anti-bound states and one bound state, while for finite values of VV there are four excitonic bound states corresponding to two singlet and two triplet modes. The major role of on-site Coulomb repulsion UU is to split singlet and triplet collective excitation branches, while VV tends to pull the singlet branches below the continuum to make them bound states.Comment: 10 eps figure
