    Compressive Strength of Mineral Trioxide Aggregate with and without Disodium Hydrogen Phosphate at Different Mixing Ratios

    Introduction: Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) is a substance with favorable physical-mechanical properties. Disodium hydrogen phosphate(DHP) is sometimes added to MTA to reduce its setting time. Therefore, this study was conducted to evaluate the effect of various ratios of liquid to powder of white MTA (WMTA) and addition of DHP on its compressive strength. Methods and Materials: One hundred and twenty samples were prepared with a two-piece stainless steel mold with a height of 6 mm and a diameter of 4 mm in order to evaluate the compressive strength where WMTA was used in 60 samples and DHP in white MTA composition (DHPWMTA) was used in other 60 samples. The compressive strength of WMTA and DHPWMTA was measured in various ratios of liquid to powder including 50, 60 and 70% and at 24 h and 21 days (n=10). Univariate Analysis of Variance test with SPSS 16 software were used to determine the difference between groups. The level of significance was set at 0.05. Results: The maximum and minimum compressive strength of WMTA groups were 63.25±1.96 (50% ratio and 21 days) and 37.79±1.28 (70% ratio and 24 h), respectively. The maximum and minimum compressive strength of DHPWMTA groups were 63.96±1.40 (60% ratio and 21 days) and 37.37±1.62 (70% ratio and 24 h), respectively. The effect of each of factors (type of material, powder to liquid ratio and time) alone were significant on the compressive strength (P<0.05). However, the interactive effect of three factors (type of material, powder to liquid ratio and time) were not statistically significant on compressive strength (P>0.05). Conclusion: Adding 2.5 wt% of DHP to white MTA increased samples compressive strength. Compressive strength in liquid to powder ratios of 50 and 60% compare to 70% and at 21 days compared to 24 h was high.Keywords: Compressive Strength; Disodium Hydrogen Phosphate; Mineral Trioxide Aggregat

    Bond Strength of White Mineral Trioxide Aggregate with and without Disodium Hydrogen Phosphate with Different Liquid-to-Powder Ratios

    Introduction: Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) can be used in the treatment of irritated vital pulp and repair of root perforations. However, the initial reaction of inflammatory cells to this material and also its setting time are not ideal. Studies have shown that disodium hydrogen phosphate (DHP), decreases the setting time of MTA, with no effect on its pH. This study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of DHP on push-out bond strength of MTA at different liquid-to-powder ratios. Methods and Materials: A total of 120 samples were prepared from the middle third of the roots of single-rooted teeth for evaluation of push-out bond strength. The push-out bond strength was measured in both groups after 72 h at different liquid-to-powder ratios, including 0.33:1, 0.5:1 and 0.6:1. Factorial ANOVA and Tukey’s HSD post-hoc tests were used to compare the differences between the independent groups. Statistical significant was set at P<0.05. Results: The push-out bond strengths of pure MTA and MTA+DHP groups were 10.96±5.78 and 13.32±5.03, respectively. Tukey’s HSD post-hoc test revealed significant differences between the two groups. Furthermore, there were no interactive effect between material and the liquid: powder ratio. Conclusion: Incorporation of DHP into MTA resulted in an increase in push-out bond strength of MTA, and an increase in liquid-to-powder ratio resulted in a decrease in push-out bond strength.Keywords: Disodium Hydrogen Phosphate; Mineral Trioxide Aggregate; Push-Out Test; Root Canal Filling Materials; Root Canal Therapy

    AxBench: A Benchmark Suite for Approximate Computing Across the System Stack

    Research areas: Approximate computing, Computer architectureAs the end of Dennard scaling looms, both the semiconductor industry and the research community are exploring for innovative solutions that allow energy efficiency and performance to continue to scale. Approximation computing has become one of the viable techniques to perpetuate the historical improvements in the computing landscape. As approximate computing attracts more attention in the community, having a general, diverse, and representative set of benchmarks to evaluate different approximation techniques becomes necessary. In this paper, we develop and introduce AxBench, a general, diverse and representative multi-framework set of benchmarks for CPUs, GPUs, and hardware design with the total number of 29 benchmarks. We judiciously select and develop each benchmark to cover a diverse set of domains such as machine learning, scientific computation, signal processing, image processing, robotics, and compression. AxBench comes with the necessary annotations to mark the approximable region of code and the application-specific quality metric to assess the output quality of each application. AxBenchwith these set of annotations facilitate the evaluation of different approximation techniques. To demonstrate its effectiveness, we evaluate three previously proposed approximation techniques using AxBench benchmarks: loop perforation [1] and neural processing units (NPUs) [2–4] on CPUs and GPUs, and Axilog [5] on dedicated hardware. We find that (1) NPUs offer higher performance and energy efficiency as compared to loop perforation on both CPUs and GPUs, (2) while NPUs provide considerable efficiency gains on CPUs, there still remains significant opportunity to be explored by other approximation techniques, (3) Unlike on CPUs, NPUs offer full benefits of approximate computations on GPUs, and (4) considerable opportunity remains to be explored by innovative approximate computation techniques at the hardware level after applying Axilog

    Gingival microleakage in class II composite restorations using different flowable composites as liner: an in vitro evaluation

    Introduction: One of the main disadvantages of composites is marginal microleakage; using flowable composites as a liner beneath composite restorations has been recommended to reduce microleakage. The aim of this study was to assess the microleakage of class II restorations with different flowable composites liners. Materials &Methods: 45 extracted premolars teeth with class II cavity preparation (90 cavities) were divided into five groups and filled as follows: 1.control group: hybrid composite (Z250) 2. Z250+surefil SDR flow 3.Z250+filtek supreme xt flow composite 4.Z250+Grandio flow 5.Z250+Tetric flow. Mesial and distal cavities were filled using snowplow and layering technique, respectively. After that, the samples were immersed in 0.5% fuchsin solution and sectioned. Gingival microleakage was then graded. Data were analyzed using Kruskal Wallis and Mann Whitney U test. Results: There was no significant difference between the snowplow and layering methods. Microleakage of Tetric flow and Grandio flow liners was significantly higher than the control group. Other flowable composites showed no significant difference in comparison with the control group. Conclusion: In the present study, the results indicated that the flowable composites were not effective on reducing gingival microleakage

    A Scanning Electron Microscope Study on the Effect of an Experimental Irrigation Solution on Smear Layer Removal

    Introduction: The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of an experimental irrigation solution, containing two different concentrations of papain, Tween 80, 2% chlorhexidine and EDTA, on removal of the smear layer. Methods and Materials: Thirty-six single-rooted teeth were divided into two experimental groups (n=12) and two positive and negative control groups of six. The canals were prepared with BioRaCe instruments up to BR7 (60/0.02). In group 1, canals were irrigated with a combination of 1% papain, 17% EDTA, Tween 80 and 2% CHX; in group 2, canals were irrigated with a combination of 0.1% papain, 17% EDTA, Tween 80 and 2% CHX. In group 3 (the negative control), the canal was irrigated with 2.5% NaOCl during instrumentation and at the end of preparation with 1 mL of 17% EDTA was used; in group 4 (positive control), normal saline was used for irrigation. The amount of the remaining smear layer was quantified according to Hulsmann method using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Data was analyzed by the Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests. Results: Two-by-two comparisons of the groups revealed no significant differences in terms of smear layer removal at different canal sections between the negative control group (standard regiment for smear layer removal) and 1% papain groups (P<0.05). Conclusion: Under the limitations of the present study, combination of 1% papain, EDTA, 2% chlorhexidine and Tween 80 can effectively remove smear layer from canal walls

    Tissue Reaction and Biocompatibility of Implanted Mineral Trioxide Aggregate with Silver Nanoparticles in a Rat Model

    Introduction: Biocompatibility and antimicrobial activity of endodontic materials are of utmost importance. Considering the extensive applications of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) in dentistry and antimicrobial properties of silver nanoparticles, this study aimed to evaluate the subcutaneous inflammatory reaction of rat connective tissues to white MTA with and without nanosilver (NS) particles. Methods and Materials: Polyethylene tubes (1.1Ă—8 mm) containing experimental materials (MTA and MTA+NS and empty control tubes) were implanted in subcutaneous tissues of seventy-five male rats. Animals were divided into five groups (n=15) according to the time of evaluation: group 1; after 7 days, group 2; after 15 days, group 3; after 30 days, group 4; after 60 days and group 5; after 90 days. The inflammatory reaction was graded and data was analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests. Statistical significance was defined at 0.05. Results: Comparison of cumulative inflammatory reaction at all intervals revealed that the mean grade of inflammatory reaction to MTA, MTA+NS and control samples were 3, 2 and 2, respectively. According to the Mann-Whitney analysis there were no significant differences between MTA+NS and MTA (P=0.42). Conclusion: Incorporation of 1% nanosilver to MTA does not affect the inflammatory reaction of subcutaneous tissue in rat models.Keywords: Biocompatibility; Mineral Trioxide Aggregate; Nanosilver; Silver Nanoparticl

    A Systematic Review and Synthesis of Empirical Research on “Knowledge Leadership”: A New Insight in the Field of Knowledge Management

    This paper aims to synthesize findings drawn from studies on knowledge leadership to identify the key trend of research in the knowledge management literature over the past two decades. A systematic literature review was performed over a data set of 149 related studies published in the international journals indexed by the WoS, SCOPUS, ProQuest, Google Scholar, Emerald Insight, and Elsevier databases between 2001 and 2021. The findings conceptualized the nature of “knowledge leadership” and revealed six core themes focusing on multiple leadership styles, knowledge leadership for learning, effective KM leadership, leader-member exchange, and customer knowledge leadership. Additionally, the content analysis revealed the importance of knowledge leaders being more transformational, distributed, empowering, and visionary. It has been widely reported that transformational leadership is a significant driver of knowledge management practices in the organization. This study provides an integrated picture of effective knowledge leadership for managers and practitioners that significantly depends on a paradigm shift from hierarchical structures and traditional models of leadership to the use of shared, distributed, and networking leadership.     Systems biology-derived genetic signatures of mastitis in dairy cattle : a new avenue for drug repurposing

    Mastitis, a disease with high incidence worldwide, is the most prevalent and costly disease in the dairy industry. Gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli (E. coli) are assumed to be among the leading agents causing acute severe infection with clinical signs. E. Coli, environmental mastitis pathogens, are the primary etiological agents of bovine mastitis in well-managed dairy farms. Response to E. Coli infection has a complex pattern affected by genetic and environmental parameters. On the other hand, the efficacy of antibiotics and/or anti-inflammatory treatment in E. coli mastitis is still a topic of scientific debate, and studies on the treatment of clinical cases show conflicting results. Unraveling the bio-signature of mastitis in dairy cattle can open new avenues for drug repurposing. In the current research, a novel, semi-supervised heterogeneous label propagation algorithm named Heter-LP, which applies both local and global network features for data integration, was used to potentially identify novel therapeutic avenues for the treatment of E. coli mastitis. Online data repositories relevant to known diseases, drugs, and gene targets, along with other specialized biological information for E. coli mastitis, including critical genes with robust bio-signatures, drugs, and related disorders, were used as input data for analysis with the Heter-LP algorithm. Our research identified novel drugs such as Glibenclamide, Ipratropium, Salbutamol, and Carbidopa as possible therapeutics that could be used against E. coli mastitis. Predicted relationships can be used by pharmaceutical scientists or veterinarians to find commercially efficacious medicines or a combination of two or more active compounds to treat this infectious disease

    Microleakage comparison of glass-ionomer and white mineral trioxide aggregate used as a coronal barrier in nonvital bleaching

    Objectives: There is some evidence that the pH at the root surface is reduced by intracoronal placement of bleaching pastes, which is known to enhance osteoclastic activity. Therefore, it is recommended that a protective barrier be used over the canal filling to prevent leakage of bleaching agents. Glass-ionomer (GI) is commonly used as a coronal barrier before nonvital bleaching. Because mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) creates high alkalinity after mixing with water, using MTA as a protective barrier over the canal filling may not only prevent leakage of bleaching agents and microorganisms, but may prevent cervical resorption. The aim of this study was to evaluate sealing ability of white mineral trioxide aggregate (WMTA) as a coronal barrier before nonvital bleaching. Study design: Root canals of one hundred thirty human maxillary incisors were instrumented and filled with gutta-percha without sealer. Gutta-percha was removed up to 3 mm below the cementoenamel junction (CEJ). The teeth were randomly divided into six experimental groups of 20 teeth each and two control groups of 5. In three experimental groups, WMTA was packed into the canal to the level of CEJ. In the remaining experimental groups, glass-ionomer (GI) was used as a coronal barrier. After a 24-hour incubation period, one of the following three bleaching agents was placed in the access cavity of each of the WMTA or GI groups. These three bleaching agents were 30% hydrogen peroxide, sodium perborate mixed with 30% hydrogen peroxide, and sodium perborate mixed with distilled water. The bleaching agents were replaced every 3 days for three times. In the positive controls, no coronal barrier was used. In the negative controls, all the tooth surfaces were covered by two layers of nail varnish. Microleakage was evaluated using protein leakage test. Statistical analyses were performed with the Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests. Results: The experimental groups showed minimum leakage which was not significantly more than tha in the negative controls. There was no statistically significant difference in leakage between the experimental groups (p<0.05). Conclusions: This study indicated that different bleaching agents have no effect on sealing ability of WMTA. © Medicina Oral S. L
