Characterization and mass balance modeling of dissolved solids concentrations and loads in the South Platte River system, northeastern Colorado

2011 Spring.Includes bibliographical references.Driven by an increasing population in the South Platte River Basin, water which was historically used for agricultural purposes is being diverted to urban areas in order to satisfy increasing municipal and industrial demands. This trend is changing the timing, location, volume, and quality of return flows to the river. The quality of return flows is of particular concern in the lower reaches of the South Platte River Basin where salinization of irrigated soils has emerged as a concern. This study addresses the critical need for a comprehensive understanding of salinity status and provides the basis for understanding the processes involved in the origin, flux, and ultimate destination of salts throughout the basin. The first phase of this research utilized historical monitoring data in order to characterize dissolved solids status and trends within the basin. Specific objectives of this phase were: (1) the compilation and assessment of available historical streamflow and dissolved solids concentration data, (2) the estimation of daily dissolved solids loads at selected monitoring sites, (3) the characterization of spatial patterns in dissolved solids concentrations and loads, and (4) the determination of temporal trends in dissolved solids concentrations and loads. The second phase of this research provides a quantification of salt balance and prediction of future streamflow and dissolved solids concentrations resulting from proposed water resource projects. The salt balance of the mainstem of the South Platte River was evaluated through the development of a reach-based water and dissolved solids budget. Components of the budget included upstream inflow, tributary contributions, major point sources, diversions, and downstream outflow. Residuals of the mass balance were used to quantify unmeasured streamflow and salt contributions to the river, the majority of which occur via ground water inflows. In the final phase of this study, a dynamic streamflow and salt mass simulation model was developed to assess water-quality impacts of water development projects. Based on mass balance concepts, this model allows for the evaluation of changes in streamflow, dissolved-solids loads, and dissolved-solids concentrations along the middle and lower portions of the South Platte River resulting from single or multiple user-configurable upstream water diversion and reuse projects. Details of the model development and operation are presented along with results of simulations of several case studies. The results of these simulations highlight the utility of a dynamic streamflow and salt mass simulation model in the evaluation of future water-quality conditions and demonstrate the importance of combined evaluation of multiple proposed water development projects

Kata Kunci : People, Process, dan Kepuasan Pelangga

Prospective Analysis Of The World Lithium Market Contribution To The Evaluation Of Supply Shortage Periods

Despite the availability a priori of lithium geological resources and an assurance from producers to raise their production capacity in the event of an increase in lithium demand, the French government is not reassured because the lithium world market in general and the French market in particular are not still shielded from a supply shortage. Indeed, due to political or environmental reasons, a possible supply restriction policy could be applied by producers. The present work aims to contribute to assessing possible shortage periods, if such scenarios occur. Our approach consists in carrying out a prospective modelling and simulation of the lithium market. We use a Multi-Agent System (MAS) method so that the individual behaviour of the market players is considered. The results of our work enabled us to conclude in a time-limited risk of a shortage in France, even in the event of a restriction combined with an increase in demand. Regarding the rest of the world, the conclusion is more pessimistic. In that case, the work attempted to search possible alternative supply scenarios to compensate shortages resulting from restrictions. At a methodological level, this work provided a promising test regarding a first application of MAS on the modelling of an industrial mining market (a field of macroeconomics). This methodological choice was motivated by the increasing interest aroused by MAS in this field since the economic crisis, generated by individual behaviour, began in 2009; a crisis, where an important supply shortage may be a future occurrence

Four Decades of the Journal \u3ci\u3eLaw and Human Behavior\u3c/i\u3e: A Content Analysis

Although still relatively young, the journal Law and Human Behavior (LHB) has amassed a publication history of more than 1300 full-length articles over four decades. Yet, no systematic analysis of the journal has been done until now. The current research coded all full-length articles to examine trends over time, predictors of the number of Google Scholar citations, and predictors of whether an article was cited by a court case. The predictors of interest included article organization, research topics, areas of law, areas of psychology, first-author gender, first-author country of institutional affiliation, and samples employed. Results revealed a vast and varied field that has shown marked diversification over the years. First authors have consistently become more diversified in both gender and country of institutional affiliation. Overall, the most common research topics were jury/judicial decision-making and eyewitness/memory, the most common legal connections were to criminal law and mental health law, and the most common psychology connection was to social-cognitive psychology. Research in psychology and law has the potential to impact both academic researchers and the legal system. Articles published in LHB appear to accomplish both
