Politeness phenomena: a case of Kiswahili honorifics

This paper discusses Standard Kiswahili honorifics in Nairobi. It used observation as a means of obtaining data in Nairobi where Standard Kiswahili is also spoken. It points out that honorifics are a chief politeness strategy across many discourse domains; Kiswahili honorifics are conspicuously used and seem easy to learn; honorifics complement other politeness strategies; they are used in both formal and informal encounters. This paper also argues that honorifics in expressing face sav-ing ideals in Kiswahili language have both a social and individual appeal. There is, therefore, a strong suggestion for social face and communal based politeness as opposed to individual polite-ness in Kiswahili. This paper observes that politeness and especially by means of honorifics makes a Kiswahili conversational encounter fruitful. The honorifics also help to define, redefine and sus-tain social strata that are used as a basis of expressing face-saving ideals and politeness in Kiswa-hili and hence contributing to less conflict in interaction and strengthening cohesion in society in question

This paper examines the spread of Swahili to South Sudan. It explores the challenges of the language in South Sudan and its potential future status and use. Data from this study were collected through interviews with South Sudanese residents and employees of various organizations. The study reveals that Swahili has gained ground in South Sudan due to war, trade, education, cross-border interaction, religion and marriage practices. This study also discusses some of the impeding barriers to the growth and spread of the language, e.g., with reference to the status and use Arabic and English. It is also observed that among the main reasons for learning Swahili for many South Sudanese people is the need to identify with other East Africans. The study also argues that the future of the language will depend on the language policies in South Sudan and the implementation of the East African Community's aspirations to make Swahili a widespread language beyond its core regions

The Ekegusii Determiner Phrase Analysis in the Minimalist Program

Abstract Among some of the recent syntactic developments, the noun phrase has been reanalyzed as a determiner phrase (DP). This study analyses the Ekegusii determiner phrase (DP) with an inquiry into the relationship between agreement of the INFL (sentence) and concord in the noun phrase (determiner phrase). It hypothesizes that the Ekegusii sentential Agreement has a symmetrical relationship with the Ekegusii Determiner Phrase internal concord and feature checking theory and full interpretation (FI) in the Minimalist Program is adequate in the analysis of the internal structure of the Ekegusii DP. In employing the Minimalist Program (MP), the study shall first seek to establish the domain of the NP in the Ekegusii DP and go ahead to do an investigation into the adequacy of the Minimalist Program in analyzing the Ekegusii DP. This study is also geared towards establishing the order of determiners in the DP between the D-head and the NP complement. The study concludes that the principles of feature checking and full interpretation in the minimalist program are mutually crucial in ensuring that Ekegusii constructions (DP and even the sentence) are grammatical (converge). This emphasizes the fact that the MP is adequate in Ekegusii DP analysis

This study attempted an understanding of political language in Kenya. It specifically focused on the problems of cohesion, coherence and pragmatic meaning in selected texts of Swahili political speeches. To handle these disparate problems of Swahili discourse , we used the eclectic approach that comprised of Cohesion approach by Halliday and Hasan (1976), Topic Framework approach by Brown and Yule (1983) and the Implicature approach by Paul Grice (1975).This thesis is organised into six chapters. The first chapter is an introductory chapter. It treats introductory elements of this study i.e. introduction, statement of the problem, aims, rationale of the study, hypotheses, scope, literature review and finally methodology. The second chapter which deals with pragmatic meaning focuses on two rhetorical devices i.e. metaphor and rhetorical question. Although these two devices, metaphor and rhetorical question have been traditionally treated as figures of speech, we re-refocused on them as bases for pragmatic implicatures in specific discourse situations. The third chapter like the second chapter, deals with aspects of meaning. Some of the aspects treated include, dialogue, truth, politeness, honorifics etc. It has been demonstrated, in this chapter, that meaning in political speeches goes beyond the usual linguistic properties of an utterance in a context of situation. Politicians twist meanings to fit situations, their own expectations and the assumed needs of the audience. In this language game, politicians maintain a unique working relationship with not just the government of the day but also satisfy the emotional, and affective needs of their audiences. Meaning looks somewhat blurred and eclipsed but strong implications and undercurrents are expressed which the audience, given their contextual knowledge and cultural dispositions interpret easily. The forth chapter handles the question of topic coherence. The subtle concept of topic is treated to understand how topic functions as a coherence principle of Swahili texts in specific discourse domains. Utterances of various kind in a speech, it has been shown, are a strang to a fragment in a way that is highly principled and fairly predictable. Political speeches in Kenya show a high sense of topic coherence and signalling as speakers move from one paratone to another. The topic is therefore interpreted as a complex entity having a number of topic related elements contributingThe fifth chapter treats cohesion from a Hallidayan perspective. Aspects like substitution, ellipsis, reference, lexical and conjunction cohesion are investigated. In using cohesion approach to account for connectivity and linking it was evident that lexical cohesion and reference cohesion were the most salient and prevalent types in rally political speeches in Kenya. Lexical cohesion was more prevalent because of its clarity. Reference cohesion on the other hand was more favoured by speech animators because of economy in referring to other elements in a textual world. Cohesive elements in chaining both inter-sentential and intra-sentential elements create a configuration that expresses a clear semantic meaning. The last chapter is a conclusion. It offers a summary of this thesis and suggestion for further research. This study was field based . It used filmed data that was recorded by audio-visual equipment, and was finally transcribed and analysed focusing on specific aims."No French Abstract
