The question is made further tricky by the racial discrepancies of the region. A violent colonial history of plantation slavery plays a significant role in determining the segregation of races based on color, language, and culture. The complexities embedded in this multi-racial society render psychological dilemma for the hybridized creoles who are caught between the racial and historical prejudices. This dissertation attempts to examine the place of the minority white creole in a black/colored dominated community, as depicted in the works Jean Rhys and Phyllis Shand Allfrey. Being white creole West-Indian authors and witnesses to the transitioning societies of the Caribbean, the literary narratives they produce efficiently aid in shaping the white creole's articulation of self identification, and in securing a space in the post-colonial negations of imperial constructs.Sarah HabibB.A. in Englis

    Observations of CH3_3OH and CH3_3CHO in a Sample of Protostellar Outflow Sources

    Iram 30-m Observations towards eight protostellar outflow sources were taken in the 96-\SI{176}{\giga\hertz} range. Transitions of CH3_3OH and CH3_3CHO were detected in seven of them. The integrated emission of the transitions of each species that fell into the observed frequency range were measured and fit using RADEX and LTE models. Column densities and gas properties inferred from this fitting are presented. The ratio of the A and E-type isomers of CH3_3OH indicate that the methanol observed in these outflows was formed on the grain surface. Both species demonstrate a reduction of terminal velocity in their line profiles in faster outflows, indicating destruction in the post-shock gas phase. This destruction, and a near constant ratio of the CH3_3OH and CH3_3CHO column densities imply it is most likely that CH3_3CHO also forms on the grain surface.Comment: Accepted for publication in Ap

    Multiple mycotoxins in rice : occurrence and health risk assessment in children and adults of Punjab, Pakistan

    Mycotoxin contamination in rice can create a health risk for the consumers. In this study, the measurement of 23 mycotoxins in rice samples (n = 180) was performed using a validated LC-MS/MS method. A food frequency questionnaire was used to get rice consumption data for the assessment of mycotoxin dietary exposure, before calculating the health risk in adults and children of north and south regions of the Pakistani Punjab province. The prevalence of aflatoxin B-1 (56%), aflatoxin B-2 (48%), nivalenol (28%), diacetoxyscirpenol (23%), fumonisin B-1 (42%), zearalenone (15%), HT-2 toxin (10%), deoxynivalenol (8%), and ochratoxin A (6%) was estimated in samples with a mean concentration range between 0.61 and 22.98 mu g/kg. Aflatoxin degradation by traditional Pakistani cooking recipes was evaluated and observed to be 41-63%. The dietary exposure to aflatoxins exceeded the tolerable daily intake at all levels, and ochratoxin A and zearalenone posed health risk at high contamination and high consumption levels. The margin of aflatoxin B-1 exposure ranged between 10 and 69 in adults and 10 and 62 in children. The mean cancer risk by aflatoxin B-1 exposure was 0.070 (adults) and 0.071 (children) cases/year/100,000 people in South Punjab population, and 0.122 (adults) and 0.127 (children) cases/year/100,000 people in North Punjab population.     Improved Binary Similarity Measures for Software Modularization

    Various binary similarity measures have been employed in clustering approaches to make homogeneous groups of similar entities in the data. These similarity measures are mostly based only on the presence and absence of features. Binary similarity measures have also been explored with different clustering approaches (e.g., agglomerative hierarchical clustering) for software modularization to make the software systems understandable and manageable. Each similarity measure has its own strengths and weaknesses that result in improving and deteriorating the clustering results, respectively. This paper highlights the strengths of some well-known existing binary similarity measures for software modularization. Furthermore, based on these existing similarity measures, this paper introduces the improved new binary similarity measures. Proofs of the correctness with illustration and a series of experiments are presented to evaluate the effectiveness of our new binary similarity measures
