    Design of Ultrahigh-Speed Switched Reluctance Machines

    High-speed electric machines have been a timely topic in recent years. Switched reluctance machines (SRMs) are very competitive candidates for high-speed applications in high-temperature environments, due to the single material rotor without permanent magnets (PM). In this chapter, recent research on ultrahigh-speed SRMs (UHSSRMs) for applications from 100,000 rpm to 1,000,000 rpm is reviewed regarding the design and control. First, the proposed control methods in the literature for ultrahigh speeds over 100,000 rpms are introduced. A direct position control using low-cost nonintrusive reflective sensors is described in detail. Experiments are conducted to validate the method on a 4/2 SRM at 100,000 rpm. Next, for even higher speeds up to 1,000,000 rpm, a high-strength, high-torque-density, and high-efficiency rotor structure is introduced. Finally, the complete design of a 1,000,000 rpm SRM is proposed and prototyped using aerostatic air bearings with the help of electromagnetic finite element analysis (FEA) tools

    Modeling boundary measurements of scattered light using the corrected diffusion approximation

    We study the modeling and simulation of steady-state measurements of light scattered by a turbid medium taken at the boundary. In particular, we implement the recently introduced corrected diffusion approximation in two spatial dimensions to model these boundary measurements. This implementation uses expansions in plane wave solutions to compute boundary conditions and the additive boundary layer correction, and a finite element method to solve the diffusion equation. We show that this corrected diffusion approximation models boundary measurements substantially better than the standard diffusion approximation in comparison to numerical solutions of the radiative transport equation

This converter reduces the voltage constraints between all cells, which results in a lower transmission losses, high switching frequencies and the improvement of the output voltage waveforms. This paper proposes an improved topology of the series multicell inverter which minimizes harmonics, reduces torque ripples and losses in a variable-speed induction motor drive. The flying capacitor multilevel inverter topology based on the classical and modified phase shift pulse width modulation (PSPWM, MPSPWM) techniques are applied in this paper to minimize harmonic distortion at the inverter output. Simulation results are presented for a 2-kW induction motor drive and the results obtained demonstrate reduced harmonics, improved transient responses and reference tracking performance of the voltage in the induction motor and consequently reduced torque ripplesPeer reviewe

    This paper surveys some analytical and experimental results concerning different randomized modulation strategies in switched-mode power converters (SMPCs). After a short review of practical experiences within the literature it presents the benefits of several randomized schemes for power converters (i.e. reduced electromagnetic interference - EMI, and lower acoustic noise). It also introduces the mathematical background for dealing with randomized modulation within the medium-frequency range: power spectrum density (PSD). Finally, the EMI measurements confirm the improved EMC performances of the randomized boost rectifier, as also in the DC-DC buck converter.Ovaj članak istražuje analitičke i eksperimentalne rezultate različitih slučajnih strategija modulacije u sklopnim energetskim pretvaračima (SMPCs). Nakon kratkog pregleda praktičnih iskustava iz literature, predstavljene su prednosti nekoliko slučajnih shema za energetske pretvarače (smanjena elektromagnetska interferencija - EMI, i niži akustični šum). Također, uvedena je matematička podloga za rad sa slučajnom modulacijom u području srednjih frekvencija: spektralna gustoća snage (PSD). Konačno, EMI mjerenja potvrđuju poboljšanja EMC performansi slučajnih uzlaznih ispravljača, kao i DC-DC silaznih pretvarača
