This volume highlights and explores the crossroads between literary analysis and historical reconstruction. Most contributions examine the relationship between âwhat Josephus wroteâ in Rome and âwhat actually happenedââprimarily in the Land of Israel. Presently, however, I am concerned with a different kind of historical reconstruction: What is the relationship between what Josephus wrote and his actual situation in Rome, his actual audience, the actual response to his writings, etc.

Event Focused Fieldwork and Comparative Methodology: Exploring Ethnic Boundaries and Cultural Variation
Impaired cerebrovascular reactivity may predict delayed cerebral ischemia after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage
Introduction: Delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI) is a major cause of disability and death after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. The literature suggests that impaired cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) may be a predictor for DCI; still no CVR based prediction model has been developed. Increased knowledge about possible predictors of DCI can improve patient management in high-risk patients and allow for shorter hospital stay in low-risk patients. Method: CVR was examined in 42 patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage and 37 patients treated for unruptured intracranial aneurysm, using acetazolamide test with transcranial Doppler monitoring of blood flow velocities. Patients were followed for development of DCI, separated into clinical deterioration and radiographic infarction. Results: For all patients, regardless of aneurysm rupture status, CVR was on average 5.5 percentage points lower on the ipsilateral side of aneurysm treatment. Patients with clinical deterioration due to DCI had lower CVR than patients without DCI, and the difference was larger on the contralateral side (33.9% vs. 49.2%). Two prediction models were constructed for clinical deterioration due to DCI. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.82 in the model using established predictors, and 0.86 in the model that also included CVR. Conclusion: Our findings support the hypothesis that impaired CVR may be an independent predictor of clinical deterioration due to DCI, and may assist in identifying patients at risk after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. Ipsilateral CVR reduction occurs in all patients after aneurysm treatment, regardless of DCI development, thus highlighting the need to evaluate ipsi- and contralateral CVR separately.publishedVersio
Health professionalsâ knowledge about female genital schistosomiasis. A qualitative investigation in a schistosomiasis endemic area in South Africa
Female Genital Schistosomiasis (FGS) is a neglected tropical disease that affects the lives of millions of women living in endemic areas. The aim of this study was to identify South African healthcare professionals' perceptions and experiences of Female Genital schistosomiasis. This qualitative study took place in Ugu District, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, in one Community Health Centre and two Primary Health Care clinics. The purpose was to explore local healthcare professionals' views and knowledge on FGS in an area endemic for Schistosoma haematobium, referred to as bilharzia, or isichenene in isiZulu. The empirical findings collected through interviews and observations are discussed in relation to the well-established research on FGS. This project also took cognizance of the United Nations (UN) sustainability development goals (SDGs) with a focus on gender and sanitation, as well as control programmes to prevent schistosomiasis. The study showed that there was a multi-faceted gap in knowledge between local midwives and professional nursesâ work-related knowledge and the medical research team. Among the main causes are skewed power relations, whereby the women affected by FGS often have low socioeconomic status in society while the higher power structures do not prioritize FGS. This leads to health professionals being in a âmiddle positionâ where they are responsible for community health but are governed by their training and the guidelines of the institution in which they are a part. Furthermore, the study showed the importance of culture since nurses and midwives consult with patients, as they are part of a framework where their role is constrained due to governmental policies, protocols for patient care and the local culture. To provide adequate health services for FGS patients, this study indicates that policy, female patient management protocols, curricula, post graduate training, clinical practice and schistosomiasis prevention programs should include FGS.publishedVersio
Protected sampling is preferable in bronchoscopic studies of the airway microbiome
The aim was to evaluate susceptibility of oropharyngeal contamination with various bronchoscopic sampling techniques.
67 patients with obstructive lung disease and 58 control subjects underwent bronchoscopy with small-volume lavage (SVL) through the working channel, protected bronchoalveolar lavage (PBAL) and bilateral protected specimen brush (PSB) sampling. Subjects also provided an oral wash (OW) sample, and negative control samples were gathered for each bronchoscopy procedure. DNA encoding bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA was sequenced and bioinformatically processed to cluster into operational taxonomic units (OTU), assign taxonomy and obtain measures of diversity.
The proportion of Proteobacteria increased, whereas Firmicutes diminished in the order OW, SVL, PBAL, PSB (p<0.01). The alpha-diversity decreased in the same order (p<0.01). Also, beta-diversity varied by sampling method (p<0.01), and visualisation of principal coordinates analyses indicated that differences in diversity were smaller between OW and SVL and OW and PBAL samples than for OW and the PSB samples. The order of sampling (left versus right first) did not influence alpha- or beta-diversity for PSB samples.
Studies of the airway microbiota need to address the potential for oropharyngeal contamination, and protected sampling might represent an acceptable measure to minimise this problem.publishedVersio
Production of charged pions, kaons and protons at large transverse momenta in pp and Pb-Pb collisions at = 2.76 TeV
Transverse momentum spectra of and up to = 20 GeV/c at mid-rapidity, |y| 0.8, in pp and Pb-Pb collisions at = 2.76 TeV have been measured using the ALICE detector at the LHC. At intermediate (2-8 GeV/c) an enhancement of the proton-to-proton ratio, (p + \bar{p})/(\pi^+ + \pi^-\(), with respect to pp collisions is observed and the ratio reaches 0.80 in central Pb-Pb collisions. The measurement of the nuclear modification factors for \(\pi^{\pm}, K^{\pm} and indicates that within the systematic and statistical uncertainties they are the same at high (> 10 GeV/c), suggesting that the chemical composition of leading particles from jets in the medium is similar to that of vacuum jets.publishedVersio
Charmonium and pair photoproduction at mid-rapidity in ultra-peripheral Pb-Pb collisions at = 2.76 TeV
The ALICE Collaboration at the LHC has measured the and ' photoproduction at mid-rapidity in ultra-peripheral Pb-Pb collisions at = 2.76 TeV. The charmonium is identified via its leptonic decay for events where the hadronic activity is required to be minimal. The analysis is based on an event sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 23 , The cross section for coherent and incoherent production in the rapidity interval -0.9 < y < 0.9, are mb and mb, respectively. The results are compared to theoretical models for production and the coherent cross section is found to be in good agreement with those models which include nuclear gluon shadowing consistent with EPS09 parametrization. In addition the cross section for the process has been measured and found to be in agreement with the STARLIGHT Monte Carlo predictions.publishedVersio
