    Intake of dietary soy isoflavones in relation to perimenstrual symptoms of Korean women living in the USA

    This study was conducted to identify the potential relationship between the dietary intake level of soy isoflavones and perimenstrual symptomatology. The research design was a cross-sectional study. The sample was made up of 84 Korean women living in the USA, aged 28–40 years. The Moos Menstrual Distress Questionnaire (MDQ) and the Food Frequency Questionnaire were used as measurement tools. The soy isoflavone intake was significantly correlated with MDQ scores in the menstrual phase. In conclusion, the beneficial effect of dietary soy isoflavones on certain menstrual symptoms was established, suggesting that soy isoflavones could be one of the dietary factors related to the complexity of premenstrual syndrome (PMS).     Inhibition of p38 MAPK Suppresses Inflammatory Cytokine Induction by Etoposide, 5-Fluorouracil, and Doxorubicin without Affecting Tumoricidal Activity

    Cancer patients undergoing treatment with systemic cancer chemotherapy drugs often experience debilitating fatigue similar to sickness behavior, a normal response to infection or tissue damage caused by the production of the inflammatory cytokines IL-1β, TNF-α, and IL-6. The p38 mitogen activated protein kinase (p38 MAPK) plays a central role in the production of these cytokines and consequently the development of sickness behavior. Targeted inhibitors of p38 MAPK can reduce systemic inflammatory cytokine production and the development of sickness behavior. Several systemic cancer chemotherapy drugs have been shown to stimulate inflammatory cytokine production, yet whether this response is related to a common ability to activate p38 MAPK is not known and is the focus of this study. This understanding may present the possibility of using p38 MAPK inhibitors to reduce chemotherapy-induced inflammatory cytokine production and consequently treatment-related fatigue. One caveat of this approach is a potential reduction in chemotherapeutic efficacy as some believe that p38 MAPK activity is required for chemotherapy-induced cytotoxicity of tumor cells. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate proof of principal that p38 MAPK inhibition can block chemotherapy- induced inflammatory cytokine production without inhibiting drug-induced cytotoxicity using murine peritoneal macrophages and Lewis Lung Carcinoma (LLC1) cells as model cell systems. Using these cells we assessed the requirement of etoposide, doxorubicin, 5-flourouracil, and docetaxel for p38 MAPK in inflammatory cytokine production and cytotoxicity. Study findings demonstrate that clinically relevant doses of etoposide, doxorubicin, and 5-FU activated p38 MAPK in both macrophages and LLC1 cells. In contrast, docetaxel failed to activate p38 MAPK in either cell type. Activation of p38 MAPK mediated the drug's effects on inflammatory cytokine production in macrophages but not LLC1 cytotoxicity and this was confirmed with inhibitor studies

    School Effects on the Wellbeing of Children and Adolescents

    Well-being is a multidimensional construct, with psychological, physical and social components. As theoretical basis to help understand this concept and how it relates to school, we propose the Self-Determination Theory, which contends that self-determined motivation and personality integration, growth and well-being are dependent on a healthy balance of three innate psychological needs of autonomy, relatedness and competence. Thus, current indicators involve school effects on children’s well-being, in many diverse modalities which have been explored. Some are described in this chapter, mainly: the importance of peer relationships; the benefits of friendship; the effects of schools in conjunction with some forms of family influence; the school climate in terms of safety and physical ecology; the relevance of the teacher input; the school goal structure and the implementation of cooperative learning. All these parameters have an influence in promoting optimal functioning among children and increasing their well-being by meeting the above mentioned needs. The empirical support for the importance of schools indicates significant small effects, which often translate into important real-life effects as it is admitted at present. The conclusion is that schools do make a difference in children’s peer relationships and well-being

    Non-affirmative Theory of Education as a Foundation for Curriculum Studies, Didaktik and Educational Leadership

    This chapter presents non-affirmative theory of education as the foundation for a new research program in education, allowing us to bridge educational leadership, curriculum studies and Didaktik. We demonstrate the strengths of this framework by analyzing literature from educational leadership and curriculum theory/didaktik. In contrast to both socialization-oriented explanations locating curriculum and leadership within existing society, and transformation-oriented models viewing education as revolutionary or super-ordinate to society, non-affirmative theory explains the relation between education and politics, economy and culture, respectively, as non-hierarchical. Here critical deliberation and discursive practices mediate between politics, culture, economy and education, driven by individual agency in historically developed cultural and societal institutions. While transformative and socialization models typically result in instrumental notions of leadership and teaching, non-affirmative education theory, previously developed within German and Nordic education, instead views leadership and teaching as relational and hermeneutic, drawing on ontological core concepts of modern education: recognition; summoning to self-activity and Bildsamkeit. Understanding educational leadership, school development and teaching then requires a comparative multi-level approach informed by discursive institutionalism and organization theory, in addition to theorizing leadership and teaching as cultural-historical and critical-hermeneutic activity. Globalisation and contemporary challenges to deliberative democracy also call for rethinking modern nation-state based theorizing of education in a cosmopolitan light. Non-affirmative education theory allows us to understand and promote recognition based democratic citizenship (political, economical and cultural) that respects cultural, ethical and epistemological variations in a globopolitan era. We hope an American-European-Asian comparative dialogue is enhanced by theorizing education with a non-affirmative approach

    FUSE determination of a low deuterium abundance along an extended sight line in the Galactic disk

    We present a study of the deuterium abundance along the extended sight line (2.7kpc) toward HD 90087 with FUSE. Both in terms of distance and column densities, HD 90087 has the longest and densest sight line observed in the Galactic disk for which a deuterium abundance has been measured from UV absorption lines. Because many interstellar clouds are probed along this sight line, possible variations in the properties of individual clouds should be averaged out. This would yield a deuterium abundance which is characteristic of the interstellar medium on scales larger than the Local Bubble. We report D/O=(1.7+/-0.7)e-2 and D/H=(9.8+/-3.8)e-6 (2 sigma). Our new results confirm that the gas-phase deuterium abundance in the distant interstellar medium is significantly lower than the one measured within the Local Bubble. We supplement our study with a revision of the oxygen abundance toward the moderately distant star Feige 110 (~200 pc). Excluding saturated lines from the fits of the FUSE spectra is critical; this led us to derive an OI column density about two times larger than the one previously reported for Feige 110. The corresponding updated D/O ratio on this sight line is D/O=(2.6+/-1.0)e-2 (2 sigma), which is lower than the one measured within the Local Bubble. The dataset available now outside the Local Bubble shows a contrast between the constancy of D/O and the variability of D/H. As oxygen is considered to be a good proxy for hydrogen within the interstellar medium, this discrepancy is puzzling. (abstract abridged
