    A unified theory of the dynamics of closed-loop supply chains

The final version is available from Elsevier via the DOI in this recordWe investigate the dynamics of a closed-loop supply chain with first-order auto-regressive (AR(1)) demand and return processes. We assume these two processes are cross-correlated. The remanufacturing process is subject to a random triage yield. Remanufactured products are considered as-good-as-new and used to partially satisfy market demand; newly manufactured products make up the remainder. We derive the optimal linear policy in our closed-loop supply chain setting to minimise the manufacturer's inventory costs. We show that the lead-time paradox can emerge in many cases. In particular, the auto- and cross-correlation parameters and variances of the error terms in the demand and the returns, as well as the remanufacturing lead time, all influence the existence of the lead-time paradox.     The impact of information sharing, random yield, correlation, and lead times in closed loop supply chains

The market demands and the product returns are stochastic and are correlated with each other. The returned products are converted into "as-good-as-new" products and used, together with new products, to satisfy the market demand. The remanufacturing process takes time and is subject to a random yield. We investigate the benefit of the manufacturer obtaining advance notice of product returns from the remanufacturer. We demonstrate that lead times, random yields and the parameters describing the returns play a significant role in the benefit of the advance notice scheme.     Magnetic properties and magnetostructural phase transitions in Ni2+xMn1-xGa shape memory alloys

    A systematic study of magnetic properties of Ni2+xMn1-xGa (0 \le x \le 0.19) Heusler alloys undergoing structural martensite-austenite transformations while in ferromagnetic state has been performed. From measurements of spontaneous magnetization, Ms(T), jumps \Delta M at structural phase transitions were determined. Virtual Curie temperatures of the martensite were estimated from the comparison of magnetization in martensitic and austenitic phases. Both saturation magnetic moments in ferromagnetic state and effective magnetic moments in paramagnetic state of Mn and Ni atoms were estimated and the influence of delocalization effects on magnetism in these alloys was discussed. The experimental results obtained show that the shift of martensitic transition temperature depends weakly on composition. The values of this shift are in good correspondence with Clapeyron-Clausius formalism taking into account the experimental data on latent heat at martensite-austenite transformations.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figure

    Global dual sourcing: ARMA(1,1) market demand and its decomposition

    This is the author accepted manuscript.We consider the case of reshoring, where a global firm takes back a portion of its low-cost offshore supply to be produced in nearshore factory in order to establish a dual sourcing supply chain equipped with both low cost and responsiveness. We first establish the performance benchmark of a single (nearshore or offshore) supplier model. In the dual sourcing setting, a firm decomposes the first order auto-regressive moving average, ARMA(1,1), market demand process into two parts: one for the nearshore source and one for the offshore source. Order-up-to policies determine the order quantities for both sources. We show how to reduce inventory costs in the dual-sourcing case to a level identical to the near-shore single-source case. Furthermore, if certain conditions are met, the nearshore manufacturing cost reduces in the offshore lead-time. This suggests low-cost and low-emission transport modes should be utilized (slow steaming vessels which are both low cost and environmentally friendly, but may endure longer offshore lead-times come to mind), breaking the trade-off between economic and environmental performance
