TG-DTA and DSC investigations of ''pinhão'' starch modified by calcium hypochlorite and UV light.
Starches, when in its native forms, usually do not have the characteristics required for industrial processing. ''Pinhão'', a seed from the Araucaria angustifolia tree, has starch as main presenting as a great alternative source of starch. Samples of native ''pinhão'' starch were treated with standard calcium hypochlorite solutions (0.1, 0.2 and 0.5 mol L-1) and exposed for one hour under UV light. The modification process applied altered the thermal behavior of the ''pinhão'' starch as the TGA-DTA and DSC results presented.Edição dos Anais do 7º Simpósio de Análise Térmica, 2015, Bauru
Report on a collecting trip of the British Myriapod Group to Hungary in 1994
During a collecting trip participated jointly by the members of the British Myriapod Group and by Hungarian
experts in 1994, 34 species of millipedes, 14 of centipedes, 8 of woodlice and 73 of spiders were recorded from
Hungary. Two records of the millipede species Boreoiulus tenuis (Bigler, 1913) and Styrioiulus styricus (Verhoeff,
1896) were new to the fauna of Hungary
Simultaneous TG-DTA and DSC techniques on pinhão starch double modified.
The “pinhão” is the seed of Araucaria angustifolia (known as Paraná pine). This specie is in danger due to reckless exploration. Thus, the development of new applications could motivate its preservation. Samples of native “pinhão” starch were oxidized with standard NaClO solutions (0.1, 0.2 and 0.5 mol L-1) and exposed for one hour under UV light (UVC radiation with ? = 256 nm). The TG curves showed similar behavior. The oxidative modification caused a decrease in the gelatinization enthalpy (DSC).Edição dos Anais do 7º Simpósio de Análise Térmica, 2015, Bauru
Predicting the Next Best View for 3D Mesh Refinement
3D reconstruction is a core task in many applications such as robot
navigation or sites inspections. Finding the best poses to capture part of the
scene is one of the most challenging topic that goes under the name of Next
Best View. Recently, many volumetric methods have been proposed; they choose
the Next Best View by reasoning over a 3D voxelized space and by finding which
pose minimizes the uncertainty decoded into the voxels. Such methods are
effective, but they do not scale well since the underlaying representation
requires a huge amount of memory. In this paper we propose a novel mesh-based
approach which focuses on the worst reconstructed region of the environment
mesh. We define a photo-consistent index to evaluate the 3D mesh accuracy, and
an energy function over the worst regions of the mesh which takes into account
the mutual parallax with respect to the previous cameras, the angle of
incidence of the viewing ray to the surface and the visibility of the region.
We test our approach over a well known dataset and achieve state-of-the-art
results.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, to be published in IAS-1
Thermal and rheological behavior of native and modified starch Araucaria angustifolia (pinhão).
Araucaria angustifolia is known in Brazil as Paraná Pine is endangered due to reckless extraction. The preservation and maintenance of the culture could be stimulated by use derivative products like the starch from its seeds (pinhão). In this work were studied samples of unmodified and modified pinhão starch. The hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) were used in the concentrations 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3 mol.L-1 (a, b, c) and simultaneously exposed in ultraviolet rays (λ = 256 nm) for one hour. One sample (N) was maintained as received for comparisons of the analysis results. The samples were analyzed by the thermoanalytical techniques: thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC); and by the rheological analysis: Rapid Viscoamylographic Analysis (RVA). The TGA showed an increase on the stability values form the (N) sample to the modified ones. The DSC showed a strong decrease on the gelatinization enthalpy with increasing of the H2O2 concentrations solutions valued for the modified samples. The RVA results presented that the Setback reduced with the treatment that used hydrogen peroxide in a higher concentration. The obtained results showed that the modification method applied altered the thermal behavior of the pinhão starch.CBRATEC
On the unconstrained expansion of a spherical plasma cloud turning collisionless : case of a cloud generated by a nanometer dust grain impact on an uncharged target in space
Nano and micro meter sized dust particles travelling through the heliosphere
at several hundreds of km/s have been repeatedly detected by interplanetary
spacecraft. When such fast moving dust particles hit a solid target in space,
an expanding plasma cloud is formed through the vaporisation and ionisation of
the dust particles itself and part of the target material at and near the
impact point. Immediately after the impact the small and dense cloud is
dominated by collisions and the expansion can be described by fluid equations.
However, once the cloud has reached micro-m dimensions, the plasma may turn
collisionless and a kinetic description is required to describe the subsequent
expansion. In this paper we explore the late and possibly collisionless
spherically symmetric unconstrained expansion of a single ionized ion-electron
plasma using N-body simulations. Given the strong uncertainties concerning the
early hydrodynamic expansion, we assume that at the time of the transition to
the collisionless regime the cloud density and temperature are spatially
uniform. We do also neglect the role of the ambient plasma. This is a
reasonable assumption as long as the cloud density is substantially higher than
the ambient plasma density. In the case of clouds generated by fast
interplanetary dust grains hitting a solid target some 10^7 electrons and ions
are liberated and the in vacuum approximation is acceptable up to meter order
cloud dimensions. ..
Human mesenchymal stromal cells inhibit platelet activation and aggregation involving CD73-converted adenosine
Background: Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are promising cell therapy candidates. Clinical application is considered safe. However, minor side effects have included thromboembolism and instant blood-mediated inflammatory reactions suggesting an effect of MSC infusion on hemostasis. Previous studies focusing on plasmatic coagulation as a secondary hemostasis step detected both procoagulatory and anticoagulatory activities of MSCs. We now focus on primary hemostasis and analyzed whether MSCs can promote or inhibit platelet activation.
Methods: Effects of MSCs and MSC supernatant on platelet activation and function were studied using flow cytometry and further platelet function analyses. MSCs from bone marrow (BM), lipoaspirate (LA) and cord blood (CB) were compared to human umbilical vein endothelial cells or HeLa tumor cells as inhibitory or activating cells, respectively.
Results: BM-MSCs and LA-MSCs inhibited activation and aggregation of stimulated platelets independent of the agonist used. This inhibitory effect was confirmed in diagnostic point-of-care platelet function analyses in platelet-rich plasma and whole blood. Using inhibitors of the CD39–CD73–adenosine axis, we showed that adenosine produced by CD73 ectonucleotidase activity was largely responsible for the LA-MSC and BM-MSC platelet inhibitory action. With CB-MSCs, batch-dependent responses were obvious, with some batches exerting inhibition and others lacking this effect.
Conclusions: Studies focusing on plasmatic coagulation suggested both procoagulatory and anticoagulatory activities of MSCs. We now show that MSCs can, dependent on their tissue origin, inhibit platelet activation involving adenosine converted from adenosine monophosphate by CD73 ectonucleotidase activity. These data may have strong implications for safety and risk/benefit assessment regarding MSCs from different tissue sources and may help to explain the tissue protective mode of action of MSCs. The adenosinergic pathway emerges as a key mechanism by which MSCs exert hemostatic and immunomodulatory functions
