    The author has identified the following significant results. Analysis of the geometric characteristics of the aircraft synthetic aperture radar (SAR) relative to LANDSAT indicated that relatively low order polynominals would model the distortions to subpixel accuracy to bring SAR into registration for good quality imagery. Also the area analyzed was small, about 10 miles square, so this is an additional constraint. For the Air Force/ERIM data, none of the tested methods could achieve subpixel accuracy. Reasons for this is unknown; however, the noisy (high scintillation) nature of the data and attendent unrecognizability of features contribute to this error. It is concluded that the quadratic model would adequately provide distortion modeling for small areas, i.e., 10 to 20 miles square

    An Unusual Late Aboriginal Assemblage from the Wilson Site (41SS186), San Saba County, Central Texas

    The late aboriginal component in the Wilson Site in San Saba County is unusual in that most of the assemblage is consistent with that of Classic Toyah, but the diagnostic projectile point is an unnotched triangular arrow point instead of the typical Perdiz point. The absence of Perdiz points suggests that this component is associated with non-Toyah people and possibly dates to after 1700. Archaeological testing by the Llano Uplift Archeological Society (LUAS) to find supporting evidence for a historic date identified an Austin phase shell midden and a “Late Component” composed of triangular arrow points, end scrapers, a beveled biface and bone-tempered sherds, but no items of European manufacture. Complicating matters, the luminescence dating on a ceramic sample opens the possibility that the Late Component predates the currently accepted beginning of the Toyah phase

    Application of Brain-Based Teaching Strategies on Academic Performance of Children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) In Mathematics

    This study examined application of Brain-based Teaching Strategies on academic performance of children with ADHD in Mathematics. Gender and Mathematics anxiety level were introduced as moderator variables. A pre-test, post-test, control group experimental design was employed for this study. Two groups were involved (experimental and control groups). The experimental group was exposed to the application of Brain-based Teaching Strategies while the control group was exposed to the conventional method. Two instruments were used (i) Achievement Test in Mathematics (ATM) (r = 0.83) and (ii) Mathematics Anxiety Rating Scale (MARS) (r = 0.80). Data obtained were analyzed using descriptive statistics of means scores and standard deviations to explain and compare pretest and posttest mean scores of the experimental and control groups in all the criteria measured. Inferential statistics of Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used to test the hypotheses and estimate the impacts of various factors on the dependent variables. Treatment was more effective at improving children with ADHD attitude to mathematics than the conventional method. Findings indicated significant improvement on children’s attention span resulting from taking cognizance of “prime times” in the teaching-learning episode. Also, tension that is normally associated with the teaching-learning process of mathematics was significantly reduced

    Contrasting multi-site genotypic distributions among discordant quantitative phenotypes: the APOA1/C3/A4/A5 gene cluster and cardiovascular disease risk factors

    Most tests of association between DNA sequence variation and quantitative phenotypes in samples of randomly chosen individuals rely on specification of genotypic strata followed by comparison of phenotypes across these strata. This strategy often succeeds when phenotypic differences are caused by one or two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) among the surveyed markers. However, when multiple-SNP haplotypes account for observed phenotypic variation, identification of the best partitioning requires examination of an inordinate number of SNP combinations. An alternative approach is to rank individuals by their phenotypic measures and ask whether attributes of the genotypic variation show a non-random distribution along this phenotypic ranking. One simple version of this strategy selects the top and bottom tails of the distribution, and then tests whether genotypes from these two samples are drawn from a single population. This framework does not require the recovery of phased haplotypes and allows contrasts between large numbers of sites at once. We use a method based on this approach to identify associations between plasma triglyceride level, a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, and multi-site genotypes located in the APOA1/C3/A4/A5 cluster of apolipoprotein genes in unrelated individuals (1,071 African-American females, 780 African-American males, 1,036 European-American females, and 930 European-American males) sampled from four US cities as part of the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study. Method performance is investigated using simulations that model genealogical variation and different genetic architectures. Results indicate that this multi-site test can identify genotype-phenotype associations with reasonable power, including those generated by some simple epistatic models. Genet.     Stratification and sample selection for multicrop experiments

    The author has identified the following significant results. A stratification was performed and sample segments were selected for an initial investigation of multicrop problems in order to support development and evaluation of procedures for using LACIE and other technologies for the classification of corn and soybeans, to identify factors likely to affect classification performance, and to evaluate problems encountered and techniques which are applicable to the crop estimation problem in foreign countries. Two types of samples, low density and high density, supporting these requirements were selected as research data set for an initial evaluation of technical issues. Looking at the geographic location of the strata, the system appears to be logical and the various segments seem to represent different conditions. This result is supportive not only of the variables and the methodology employed in the stratification, but also of the validity of the data sets employed

    An amphitropic cAMP-binding protein in yeast mitochondria

    ABSTRACT: We describe the first example of a mitochondrial protein with a covalently attached phos-phatidylinositol moiety acting as a membrane anchor. The protein can be metabolically labeled with both stearic acid and inositol. The stearic acid label is removed by phospholipase D whereupon the protein with the retained inositol label is released from the membrane. This protein is a cAMP receptor of the yeast Saccharomyces cereuisiae and tightly associated with the inner mitochondrial membrane. However, it is converted into a soluble form during incubation of isolated mitochondria with Ca2+ and phospholipid (or lipid derivatives). This transition requires the action of a proteinaceous, N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive component of the intermembrane space and is accompanied by a decrease in the lipophilicity of the cAMP receptor. We propose that the component of the intermembrane space triggers the amphitropic behavior of the mitochondrial lipid-modified CAMP-binding protein through a phospholipase activity. Only in recent years specific fatty acids have been recog-nized to play important roles in the association of proteins with membranes. Both noncovalent and covalent interactions be-tween fatty acids and proteins have been reported. Among the latter are GTP-binding proteins (Molenaar et al., 1988)
