Galaxy-CMB and galaxy-galaxy lensing on large scales: sensitivity to primordial non-Gaussianity
A convincing detection of primordial non-Gaussianity in the local form of the
bispectrum, whose amplitude is given by the fNL parameter, offers a powerful
test of inflation. In this paper we calculate the modification of two-point
cross-correlation statistics of weak lensing - galaxy-galaxy lensing and
galaxy-Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) cross-correlation - due to fNL. We
derive and calculate the covariance matrix of galaxy-galaxy lensing including
cosmic variance terms. We focus on large scales (l<100) for which the shape
noise of the shear measurement becomes irrelevant and cosmic variance dominates
the error budget. For a modest degree of non-Gaussianity, fNL=+/-50,
modifications of the galaxy-galaxy lensing signal at the 10% level are seen on
scales R~300 Mpc, and grow rapidly toward larger scales as \propto R^2. We also
see a clear signature of the baryonic acoustic oscillation feature in the
matter power spectrum at ~150 Mpc, which can be measured by next-generation
lensing experiments. In addition we can probe the local-form primordial
non-Gaussianity in the galaxy-CMB lensing signal by correlating the lensing
potential reconstructed from CMB with high-z galaxies. For example, for
fNL=+/-50, we find that the galaxy-CMB lensing cross power spectrum is modified
by ~10% at l~40, and by a factor of two at l~10, for a population of galaxies
at z=2 with a bias of 2. The effect is greater for more highly biased
populations at larger z; thus, high-z galaxy surveys cross-correlated with CMB
offer a yet another probe of primordial non-Gaussianity.Comment: 21 pages, 30 figure
Evaluation of a high temperature adhesive for fabricating graphite/PMR-15 polyimide structures
Tests are conducted to measure shear strength, shear modulus and flatwise tensile strength of the A7F (amide-imide modified LARC-13) adhesive system. An investigation is also conducted to determine the effect of geometric material parameters, and elevated temperature on the static strength of standard joints. Single-lap and double-lap composite joints, and single, double and step lap composite to metal joints are characterized. A series of advanced joints consisting of preformed adherends, adherends with scalloped edges and joints with hybrid interface plies are tested and compared to baseline single and double-lap designs
Implementation experiences of NASTRAN on CDC CYBER 74 SCOPE 3.4 operating system
The implementation of the NASTRAN system on the CDC CYBER 74 SCOPE 3.4 Operating System is described. The flexibility of the NASTRAN system made it possible to accomplish the change with no major problems. Various sizes of benchmark and test problems, ranging from two hours to less than one minute CP time were run on the CDC CYBER SCOPE 3.3, Univac EXEC-8, and CDC CYBER SCOPE 3.4. The NASTRAN installation deck is provided
Comparisons of AEROX computer program predictions of lift and induced drag with flight test data
The AEROX aerodynamic computer program which provides accurate predictions of induced drag and trim drag for the full angle of attack range and for Mach numbers from 0.4 to 3.0 is described. This capability is demonstrated comparing flight test data and AEROX predictions for 17 different tactical aircraft. Values of minimum (skin friction, pressure, and zero lift wave) drag coefficients and lift coefficient offset due to camber (when required) were input from the flight test data to produce total lift and drag curves. The comparisons of trimmed lift drag polars show excellent agreement between the AEROX predictions and the in flight measurements
Verifying termination and error-freedom of logic programs with block declarations
We present verification methods for logic programs with delay declarations. The verified properties are termination and freedom from errors related to built-ins. Concerning termination, we present two approaches. The first approach tries to eliminate the well-known problem of speculative output bindings. The second approach is based on identifying the predicates for which the textual position of an atom using this predicate is irrelevant with respect to termination.
Three features are distinctive of this work: it allows for predicates to be used in several modes; it shows that block declarations, which are a very simple delay construct, are sufficient to ensure the desired properties; it takes the selection rule into account, assuming it to be as in most Prolog implementations. The methods can be used to verify existing programs and assist in writing new programs
Study of a very low cost air combat maneuvering trainer aircraft
A very low cost aircraft for performing Air Combat Maneuvering (ACM) training was studied using the BD-5J sport plane as a point of departure. The installation of a larger engine and increased fuel capacity were required to meet the performance and mission objectives. Reduced wing area increased the simulation of the ACM engagement, and a comparison with current tactical aircraft is presented. Other factors affecting the training transfer are considered analytically, but a flight evaluation is recommended to determine the concept utility
Testing flatness of the universe with probes of cosmic distances and growth
When using distance measurements to probe spatial curvature, the geometric
degeneracy between curvature and dark energy in the distance-redshift relation
typically requires either making strong assumptions about the dark energy
evolution or sacrificing precision in a more model-independent approach.
Measurements of the redshift evolution of the linear growth of perturbations
can break the geometric degeneracy, providing curvature constraints that are
both precise and model-independent. Future supernova, CMB, and cluster data
have the potential to measure the curvature with an accuracy of
sigma(Omega_K)=0.002, without specifying a particular dark energy
phenomenology. In combination with distance measurements, the evolution of the
growth function at low redshifts provides the strongest curvature constraint if
the high-redshift universe is well approximated as being purely matter
dominated. However, in the presence of early dark energy or massive neutrinos,
the precision in curvature is reduced due to additional degeneracies, and
precise normalization of the growth function relative to recombination is
important for obtaining accurate constraints. Curvature limits from distances
and growth compare favorably to other approaches to curvature estimation
proposed in the literature, providing either greater accuracy or greater
freedom from dark energy modeling assumptions, and are complementary due to the
use of independent data sets. Model-independent estimates of curvature are
critical for both testing inflation and obtaining unbiased constraints on dark
energy parameters.Comment: 23 pages, 11 figures; submitted to Phys. Rev.

Anomaly mediated neutrino-photon interactions at finite baryon density
We propose new physical processes based on the axial vector anomaly and
described by the Wess-Zumino-Witten term that couples the photon, Z-boson, and
the omega-meson. The interaction takes the form of a pseudo-Chern-Simons term,
. This term
induces neutrino-photon interactions at finite baryon density via the coupling
of the Z-boson to neutrinos. These interactions may be detectable in various
laboratory and astrophysical arenas. The new interactions may account for the
MiniBooNE excess. They also produce a competitive contribution to neutron star
cooling at temperatures >10^9 K. These processes and related axion--photon
interactions at finite baryon density appear to be relevant in many
astrophysical regimes.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures; references adde
The optical counterpart of SAX J1808.4-3658, the transient bursting millisecond X-ray pulsar
A set of CCD images have been obtained during the decline of the X-ray
transient SAX J1808.4-3658 during April-June 1998. The optical counterpart has
been confirmed by several pieces of evidence. The optical flux shows a
modulation on several nights which is consistent with the established X-ray
binary orbit period of 2 hours. This optical variability is roughly in
antiphase with the weak X-ray modulation. The source mean magnitude of V=16.7
on April 18 declined rapidly after April 22. From May 2 onwards the magnitude
was more constant at around V=18.45 but by June 27 was below our sensitivity
limit. The optical decline precedes the rapid second phase of the X-ray
decrease by 3 +/- 1 days. The source has been identified on a 1974 UK Schmidt
plate at an estimated magnitude of ~20. The nature of the optical companion is
discussed.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures; published in MNRAS, March 15th 199
