    Shunt Diode Designs in Li/cf Shuttle Batteries

    Although Li/CF cells and batteries have an excellent safety record, they are included with other battery systems that require additional safety precautions. One precaution suggested is the inclusion of shunt diodes into these batteries. The benefits of this addition are examined. All cells tested at elevated temperatures vent regardless of length of time between being fully discharged and reversed or inclusion of the diode in the system. Cells discharged at ambient temperatures all show a relatively quick reversal, but stabilize at voltages that are high enough that the diodes are not functioning. Cells tested at depressed temperatures reverse the deepest of all cells tested, with the deepest reversal occurring very early in the test and voltages recovering to above -0.60 volts near the end of the tests. Anode limited cells will eliminate the venting during hot reversal

    Massive star evolution : rotation, winds, and overshooting vectors in the Mass-Luminosity plane I. A calibrated grid of rotating single star models

    We aim to constrain massive star evolution models using the unique testbed eclipsing binary HD166734 with new grids of MESA stellar evolution models, adopting calibrated prescriptions of overshooting, mass loss, and rotation. We introduce a novel tool: the "mass-luminosity plane" or "M-L plane", as an equivalent to the traditional HR diagram, utilising it to reproduce the testbed binary HD166734 with newly calibrated MESA stellar evolution models for single stars. We can only reproduce the Galactic binary system with an enhanced amount of core overshooting (alpha = 0.5), mass loss, and rotational mixing. We can utilise the gradient in the M-L plane to constrain the amount of mass loss to 0.5 - 1.5 times the standard Vink et al. 2001 prescriptions, and we can exclude extreme reduction or multiplication factors. The extent of the vectors in the M-L plane leads us to conclude that the amount of core overshooting is larger than is normally adopted in contemporary massive star evolution models. We furthermore conclude that rotational mixing is mandatory to get the nitrogen abundance ratios between the primary and secondary components to be correct (3:1) in our testbed binary system. Our calibrated grid of models, alongside our new M-L plane approach, present the possibility of a widened main sequence due to an increased demand for core overshooting. The increased amount of core overshooting is not only needed to explain the extended main sequence, but the enhanced overshooting is also needed to explain the location of the upper-luminosity limit of the red supergiants.     Distribution of Gamma-Ray Bursts in Halo Neutron Star-Comet Models

    The motions of comets and neutron stars have been integrated over five billion years in the Galactic potential to determine a gamma-ray burst distribution, presuming that bursts are the result of interactions between these two families of objects. The comets originate in two distinct populations - one from ejection by stars in the Galactic disk, and the other from ejection by stars in globular clusters. No choice of the free parameters resulted in agreement with both the isotropy data and the log(N>F)log(F)\log(N>F) - \log(F) data.Comment: 4 pages LaTex and two style files, tarred, compressed, and uuencoded.     The Deutsch Field Gamma-Ray Pulsar - Paper I: The Model Basics

    A new model for the high-energy emission from pulsars is developed by considering charged particle motion in the fields of a spinning, highly magnetised and conducting sphere in vacuum. A generally applicable approximation to the particle motion in strong fields is developed and applied to the numerical modelling, and the radiation emitted by curvature emission is summed to generate light curves. The model predicts many of the observed features of pulsar light curves. This paper outlines the basic properties of the model; a subsequent paper will discuss the statistical properties of a population of model pulsars and apply the model to the known gamma-ray pulsars.Comment: 11 pages LaTex, 10 postscript figures included with psfig.     A fast direct solver for a class of two-dimensional separable elliptic equations on the sphere

    An efficient, direct, second-order solver for the discrete solution of two-dimensional separable elliptic equations on the sphere is presented. The method involves a Fourier transformation in longitude and a direct solution of the resulting coupled second-order finite difference equations in latitude. The solver is made efficient by vectorizing over longitudinal wavenumber and by using a vectorized fast Fourier transform routine. It is evaluated using a prescribed solution method and compared with a multigrid solver and the standard direct solver from FISHPAK

    What is the value of recourse to asset backed securities? A clinical study of credit card banks

    The present paper uses data from revolving credit card securitizations to show that, conditional on being in a position where implicit recourse has become necessary and actually providing that recourse, recourse to securitized debt may benefit short- and long-term stock returns, and long-term operating performance of sponsors. The paper suggests that this result may come about because those sponsors providing the recourse do not seem to be extreme default or insolvency risks. However, sponsors providing recourse do experience an abnormal delay in their normal issuance cycle around the event. Hence, it appears that the asset-backed securities market is like the commercial paper market, where a firm's ability to issue is directly correlated with credit quality. Therefore, although in violation of regulatory guidelines and FASB140, recourse may have beneficial effects for sponsors by revealing that the shocks that made recourse necessary are transitory. ; Also issued as Payment Cards Center Discussion Paper No. 03-04Asset-backed financing ; Credit cards

    An electrochemical study of the corrosion behavior of primer coated 2219-T87 aluminum

    The corrosion behavior for 2219-T87 aluminum coated with various primers, including those used for the external tank and solid rocket boosters of the Space Shuttle Transportation System, were investigated using electrochemical techniques. Corrosion potential time, polarization resistance time, electrical resistance time, and corrosion rate time measurements were all investigated. It was found that electrical resistance time and corrosion rate time measurement were most useful for studying the corrosion behavior of painted aluminum. Electrical resistance time determination give useful information concerning the porosity of paint films, while corrosion rate time curves give important information concerning overall corrosion rates and corrosion mechanisms. In general, the corrosion rate time curves all exhibited at least one peak during the 30 day test period, which was attributed, according to the proposed mechanisms, to the onset of the hydrogen evolution reaction and the beginning of destruction of the protective properties of the paint film
