    Idade e crescimento do boca-negra, Helicolenus dactylopterus dactylopterus (Delaroche, 1809) dos Açores

    A idade e o crescimento de boca-negra, Helicolenus dactylopterus dactylopterus (Delaroche, 1809), foram estudadas pela observação dos otólitos (sagittae) esquerdos inteiros (n = 401) obtidos de exemplares (14-47 cm de comprimento total) capturados em águas Açoreanas. Enumeraram-se os anéis opacos observados na face anti-sulcal dos otólitos. Os intervalos de idades foram 3-14 anos para machos e 3-12 anos para fêmeas. Estimaram-se e compararam-se os parâmetros da equação de crescimento de von Bertalanffy, entre sexos e entre métodos (leitura directa de otólitos, retrocálculo e análise de distribuições de frequências de comprimentos). Não se verificaram diferenças importantes. Os resultados são diferentes da literatura publicada para a região. Discutem-se as causas e implicações dos resultados obtidos.ABSTRACT: Bluemouth, Helicolenus dactylopterus dactylopterus (Delaroche, 1809), age and growth were studied by whole-view examination of left sagittae (n = 401) obtained from specimens (14-47 cm in total length) caught off the Azores. Opaque rings observed on the anti-sulcal surface of sagittae were enumerated as age estimates. Ages ranged from 3 to 14 years in males and 3 to 12 years in females. The von Bertalanffy growth equation was fitted to average length at age data, and compared between sexes and methods (direct examination of otoliths, backcalculation and length-frequency analysis). No important differences in growth between sexes were found. Results are different from published literature for the region. The causes and implications of the results are discussed

    Catalog of Isolated Galaxies Selected from the 2MASS Survey

    We search for isolated galaxies based on the automatic identification of isolated sources from the Two Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS) followed by a visual inspection of their surroundings. We use the modified Karachentseva criterion to compile a catalog of 3227 isolated galaxies (2MIG), which contains 6% of 2MASS Extended Sources Catalog (or 2MASX) sources brighter than Ks = 12 mag with angular diameters a_K > 30 arcsec. The catalog covers the entire sky and has an effective depth of z = 0.02. The 2493 very isolated objects of the catalog, which we include into the 2MVIG catalog, can be used as a reference sample to investigate the effects of the environment on the structure and evolution of galaxies located in regions with extremely low density of matter.Comment: 19 pages, 13 figure

    Microwave dielectric permittivity and photoluminescence of Eu 2O3 doped laser heated pedestal growth Ta 2O5 fibers

    Partilhar documento na coleção da comunidade Laboratório Associado I3NWe report the microwave dielectric properties and photoluminescence of undoped and europium oxide doped Ta2O5 fibers, grown by laser heated pedestal growth technique. The effects of Eu2O3 doping 1–3 mol % on the structural, optical, and dielectric properties were investigated. At a frequency of 5 GHz, the undoped material exhibits a dielectric permittivity of 21 and for Eu2O3 doped Ta2O5 samples it increases, reaching up to 36 for the highest doping concentration. Nevertheless, the dielectric losses maintain a very low value. For this wide band gap oxide, Eu3+ optical activation was achieved and the emission is observed up to room temperature.     Structural and optical properties on thulium-doped LHPG-grown Ta2O5 fibres

    Structural, spectroscopic and dielectric properties of thulium-doped laser-heated pedestal Ta2O5 as-grown fibres were studied. Undoped samples grow preferentially with a single crystalline monoclinic structure. The fibre with the lowest thulium content (0.1 at%) also shows predominantly a monoclinic phase and no intra-4f12 Tm3+ recombination was observed. For sample with the highest thulium amount (1.0 at%), the appearance of a dominant triclinic phase as well as intraionic optical activation was observed. The dependence of photoluminescence on excitation energy allows identification of different site locations of Tm3+ ions in the lattice. The absence of recombination between the first and the ground-state multiplets as well as the temperature dependence of the observed transitions was justified by an efficient energy transfer between the Tm3+ ions. Microwave dielectric properties were investigated using the small perturbation theory. At a frequency of 5 GHz, the undoped material exhibits a dielectric permittivity of 21 and for thulium-doped Ta2O5 samples it decreases to 18 for the highest doping concentration.     Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) strains may carry virulence properties of diarrhoeagenic E-coli

    To analyze whether Escherichia coli strains that cause urinary tract infections (UPEC) share virulence characteristics with the diarrheagenic E. coli (DEC) pathotypes and to recognize their genetic diversity, 225 UPEC strains were examined for the presence of various properties of DEC and UPEC (type of interaction with HeLa cells, serogroups and presence of 30 virulence genes). No correlation between adherence patterns and serogroups was observed. Forty-five serogroups were found, but 64% of the strains belonged to one of the 12 serogroups (O1, O2, O4, O6, O7, O14, O15, O18, O21, O25, O75, and O175) and carried UPEC virulence genes (pap, hly, aer, sfa, cnf). the DEC genes found were: aap, aatA, aggC, agg3C, aggR, astA, eae, ehly, iha, irp2, lpfA(O113), pet, pic, pilS, and shf. Sixteen strains presented aggregative adherence and/or the aatA sequence, which are characteristics of enteroaggregative E. coli (EAEC), one of the DEC pathotypes. in summary, certain UPEC strains may carry DEC virulence properties, mostly associated to the EAEC pathotype. This finding raises the possibility that at least some faecal EAEC strains might represent potential uropathogens.     Raman and infrared phonon features in a designed cubic polymorph of CaTa2O6

    At room temperature, calcium tantalite (CaTa2O6) is known to exhibit three stable polymorphs, depending on the crystal growth conditions. In this work, the laser-heated pedestal growth method was used to obtain CaTa2O6 single crystal fibers in its quenched (ordered) cubic polymorph, attractive for optical applications. X-ray diffraction, Raman scattering and infrared spectroscopy showed that the fibers grew into the centrosymmetrical Pm3 space group. The growth axis was determined as [001]. The cylindrical fibers (20 mm long and 400 μm wide) showed good optical quality, without cracks or striations, but with small facets, parallel to crystal edges or to in-plane edge bicetrices. A comprehensive set of the optical phonons for this cubic structure was obtained, consisting of 13 (of 16 foreseen) triply degenerate polar phonons, and all the 21 predicted Raman modes. By using special scattering geometries, the Raman bands were attributed to their corresponding irreducible representations. In general, the phonons showed rather large damping constants, which do not compromise the designed optical applications in compact lasers but increase the losses in the microwave range, even though the dielectric response is quite adequate for microwave applications.     Synthesis of YAP phase by a polymeric method and phase progression mechanisms

    Abstract The phase formation kinetics of YAP (YAlO 3 ) synthesized through the polymeric precursor method was investigated by thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction and FT-IR spectroscopy. We demonstrated that the YAP synthesis is highly dependent on the heat and mass transport during all stages of the synthesis route. In the first stages, during the preparation of amorphous precursor, ''hot spots'' need to be suppressed to avoid the occurrence of chemical inhomogeneities. Very high heating rates combined with small amorphous particles are advantageous in the last stage during the formation of crystalline phase. We were able to synthesize nanosized particles of YAP single phase at temperatures around 1100°C for future preparation of phosphors or ceramics for optics
